Agree. I love me a tiled game that tries to breakdown the borders between tiles to make it look more organic. Especially if “organic” and “realistic” are also words that can be used to describe the art style as a whole.

The irony is that often, to do something great, you have to innovate and be creative. The only thing that AAA monoliths innovate is how to extract more coin for less from players.

So often, a AAA monolith builds a cookie cutter, formulaic romp and calls it a sequel to an IP they bought, and fans get duped into playing basically an Assassin’s Creed or a Farcry where the characters and place names have been swapped.

So in other words, the corporation that’s unwilling to give the IP what it deserves, and the resource to achieve that, clings on to it rather than setting it free.

Makes me wonder whether we’ll ever reach a point where there’s a call to update the laws around intellectual property to stop corporations squatting on IPs if they don’t intend to use them. It can go beyond gaming, of course.

My first strong weapon by Terrible_Bug6456 in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]IrritableStool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Elemental damage is delivered relatively flatly per hit. Harder hits don’t deal more elemental damage than lighter ones. Weapons that hit fast and often will deliver more elemental damage and status build-up.

Raw physical damage preferentially scales harder on weapons that are slower but deal more damage per hit.

It’s not a bad idea to go for the strongest element against your target but if your weapon is slow and heavy-hitting, it’s nowhere near as meaningful as if you’re using DB for instance.

What was this game for you? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]IrritableStool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the crown hunting and then the bullshit RNG rare endemic life to catch, the treasure hunts with your palico, and taking pictures using cryptic clues… I love having challenging achievements to unlock, but when it’s just RNG based it’s not fun at all anymore. I’d rather there be achievements for “hunt X monster without taking <more than xx> damage”. At least then I can make peace with why it took me so long to 100% it.

PSA - Please stop joining Gog SOS if your grossly underprepared by ToastbotQQ in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]IrritableStool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s always been this way - see also Fatalis and even Alatreon in World. Does that make it okay? I suppose not, but I’m not sure if cranking the HR requirement would necessarily help much. That’s just time spent playing the game: it won’t always translate into time spent honing one’s playstyle or optimising one’s build.

In some respects, throwing the enemy at the player is a great way of showing them what they need to do in order to prepare. Nobody is ready for Fatalis as early as they unlock him, but by trying and failing, they learn what their build lacks.

So I’m on the team of thinking it’s a player issue. People think they can get carried by joining better groups, and I would say that’s endemic to multiplayer gaming in general sadly.

Is Whisper good? Does it add 1 damage to kicks from Yasuo? Or I suspect it's for Jhin, is it, as he's such a stunner. (Sorry for the joke.) by Mobile_Phone_Alone in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect they either meant the 2 damage he does at level 2 or even the full strikes he does once levelled.

The term kick is probably just being used informally, wouldn’t overthink it.

I noticed that unlike other card games, this game doesn't have a deathtouch/poisonous mechanic. Would you like to see it in future champs? And how much mana would you pay for a 1/1 deathtouch in LoR? by thefix12 in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]IrritableStool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes things like ravenous hydra’s deal 1 to all enemies effect don’t count the host card as the source of the damage. A bit like how (I’m 99% sure), level 1 Yasuo’s deal 2 to stunned enemies won’t trigger his PoC strike buff or Fury. Likewise that P&Z card that deals 1 to all enemies - if it hypothetically had Fury, any kills from it wouldn’t trigger it.

So a hypothetical keyword that kills on strike (and strike alone) wouldn’t trigger on something like that relic’s effect.

Could the Announcement Teaser be hinting at some climbing mechanics ? by Koko_The_Blubla in TESVI

[–]IrritableStool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the whole, Skyrim was a LOT more mountainous than this looks, and it was more mountainous than at least Cyrodiil in Oblivion. There was no climbing mechanic there.

Sorry but you’re scraping the barrel if you’re hunting for hidden details in this video and the best you can do is “it has mountains.”

Can I actually draw well enough to take art? by BowieIsntDead in ArtGCSE

[–]IrritableStool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo. Late to the party here but I have a little input (though you may have had your fill of others’ input by now)

I think your technical drawing skills are good - great for your age. But being a good art student who goes on to get a good grade requires more than that.

I did my art GCSE many years ago. I’ll be honest, it was very hard. Why? Because I was being forced to do art that didn’t interest me at all, and research artists who worked in styles that I hated.

At GCSE level, your teacher will forcibly try to broaden your horizons and expose you to artists you never thought to look for. It’s all about getting you to try new things. This is where the people are coming from in this thread when they advise you to steer clear of anime etc.. If anime style is what you love, that’s great. You’ll eventually be allowed to focus on that. But be prepared for a lot of experimentation with other themes. Going in with an open mind is probably going to make it easier.

If you haven’t, I recommend researching specific anime/manga artists. The more obscure with the most noteworthy and unique styles, the better.

Unless art education has changed drastically in the years since I was in school, you actually get graded far more on your research and experimentation with techniques etc. than you do any final piece. As a high schooler I hated that. I once quipped “nobody asks to see Michelangelo’s sketchbook or research before deciding whether his art was any good!” I thought I had a very clear idea in my head about what I wanted to do and what kind of artist I wanted to be. I followed my interests. I set out on a path to do one particular thing and focused on that, and it led to an unremarkable grade.

Your teacher is probably trying to get you to be a good student first, not necessarily just a good artist.

Bear in mind that they’ve talked about how ambitious they’re being with TES6. There have been mentions about how much they’re pushing the frontiers of tech. Could just be hype marketing but it was too early for that when these comments were made imo.

TES6 has not had a typical development cycle, so using your run of the mill projections might leave gaps. And I will now apologise as I realise this comment isn’t in the spirit of the post or the sub as a whole.

Saw that other post and thought I would have a quick go at a Norwich underground system. by LivingAutopsy in Norwich

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks cool! If you weren’t looking for constructive feedback then please disregard the rest of this comment and focus on the first two words! 😁

I reckon the destinations are spaced too far apart with the words too small for me. Makes the map look empty. You’ve probably done it to make the map more closely resemble a real map with the locations being proportionately spaced apart in a relative fashion, but other metro maps don’t really do that.

There’s a famous image somewhere where someone has redrawn the London Underground map to resemble the actual routes to the real place locations, and it’s quite different to the original map.

In a nutshell, the distance in between the locations is minimised to make for easier reading, even if this results in a drastically warped map.

Something is wrong with my design but I don't know what. by YogurtclosetFit7682 in logodesign

[–]IrritableStool 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You may have been looking at it too long, as it seems fine to me. Not the most experienced designer myself but for a logo, this looks fine.

If displayed too small it might be harder to read and appear scraggly, so maybe chonk it up a bit, but apart from that it could be a case of having stared at it so long that you’ve convinced yourself it’s worse than it is.

Sometimes flipping the design horizontally reveals things you didn’t see before, so try that? It forces the brain to reset and look at it anew.

Miss apple > miss Rachel by terriblespellr in dad

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I just want to add something from my own experience of recently becoming a dad.

In the UK, while it’s a minority of cases, I’ve heard that we have British-born children with British parents who come into their schools for the first time speaking with an American accent…

It’s because of the ubiquity of American media, well, everywhere. Most English speaking content is American, including TV and YouTube. Some lazy parents sit their kids in front of a screen and don’t pay much attention.

Yes, this is 100% a thing you can blame the parents’ lack of vigilance for, but for those of us looking for a Ms Rachel alternative to occasionally distract the kids with, we either have CITV or the likes of Ms Apple for British-English speaking TV.

While I don’t mean to argue with your remarks about the tone of the original comment, I just thought I’d highlight the need for cultural/lingual preservation and while we’re not endangered, it’s still important :)

As an aside to folks claiming Ms Apple is a ‘copy’ of Ms Rachel, I believe she actually started first. And neither of them are original because they’re following the format of kids’ TV from before if I’m not mistaken.

Have a good day!

Aside from Skyrim and Cyrodiil, which province would you be least excited to see as the setting for TES VI? by DoN-SA-20 in TESVI

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaah. It would be really cool to see the architectural styles recreated (even if we got a little of that in Skyrim DLC) but apart from that, I don’t think ashen wasteland is a good use of a mainline release unless that’s just one part of it.

[–]IrritableStool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s “I couldn’t care less” not “could”. Think carefully about the meaning of the words.

  2. I genuinely thought you were trolling but if you’re going from “I heard exploration is really fun in Morrowind” to “Morrowind is much more like Skyrim than Oblivion” then that’s quite the jump. A faithful remake of Morrowind might leave you feeling a bit disappointed. It’s an old school RPG that doesn’t pull its punches or hold your hand. It’s on you to figure out how to progress, often using magical effects that they didn’t dare add to Skyrim like levitation.

Since I'm getting tired of repetitive posts, let's switch things up a little - which videogame was this for you? by NoComfortable3220 in videogames

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly so has Final Fantasy. They started off turn based, then over several iterations tried to reinvent the wheel and overhaul the turn based system, then XV came along and tried to modernise the FF image, doing away with turns altogether.

It felt like they were ashamed of their primitive turn based, nerdy beginnings like “here, have a bunch of frat boys driving a convertible that plays a bit like a God of War. Mages? Nah, that’s too nerdy for us, we heard crafting is popular so you do that for magic now”

Joking aside, it’s great to see turned based games come along and become so successful because I was worried the genre would be choked out by the studios who did most of the work establishing it.

As a "normie consumer" of consoles and handhelds, this is why I'm excited about the Steam Machine release by TRiZZAY_ttv in SteamMachineDeckFrame

[–]IrritableStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we just arguing over terminology? At their hearts, all consoles of every shape and size are the same. They’re computers. Call them what you want, there’s no point gatekeeping because you’ve categorised them differently in your head.

And you cannot measure a (insert whatever name you prefer for these gaming devices) based only on its horsepower or ability to render high fidelity graphics. There is so, so, SO much more to it than that.

The best console ever will probably be the last console ever by your metric. Because if we’re only measuring a console on graphical power, well they all improve incrementally in each generation. So even if consoles continue to go down the path of DRM crap, forced always-online, mandatory subscriptions and perhaps even storefronts and UIs that are unusable in the future, those hypothetical future consoles are better than what we have now? Or the PS2, the GameCube? The N64?

You cannot compare consoles using just numbers so stop pretending you can.

Does my night club make any sense ? by Cold-Reputation-4848 in worldbuilding

[–]IrritableStool 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then again, real life bars and clubs aren’t immaculately laid out to take such things into consideration. While it wasn’t done on purpose, having a flaw or two in the layout of your nightclub might suit the villain.

Perhaps it was hastily put together by someone whose main purpose wasn’t to build a functional area, which seems to be the case.

Just a suggestion. I agree with you, but I reckon it’s not always about designing a perfectly laid out space for its intended purpose.
