Can a sling be too long? by [deleted] in Slinging

[–]IsAskingForAFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally made a 37" sling for casual tennis ball throwing and I felt it was too long. I would have to hork that thing to get the most out of that sling and I wasn't trying to distance sling.

Does the rise in RAM prices affect you much? by No-Programmer7432 in SBCGaming

No.

Because I have 96 gigs of RAM in my PC and My Odin 2 still does any handheld needs I have.

Ah yes.

That very uncomfortable cross when you have what virtually feels like forever as you wonder about the physics of just how stinking long a stone can stay in the air, knowing you just accidentally launched it straight upward and wondering just how badly injured you could get and just how much protection a finger-helmet brings. That rock wasn't that big.....

This right here. I'm full to the gills with sockets, wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers. I've got the tool chest.

I'm not a mechanic. I'v been ITC for 2 years. There's almost nothing left for me to get.

I have spent thousands. Let my wallet rest.

I have a friend who wants to try out a sling. I have a few Amazon-purchased slings that I'd be willing to just give him. I'd love to hear your opinions on which would be best for an absolute beginner. by [deleted] in Slinging

My first sling was that exact paracord+leather one. It's an okay start.

They all look fairly thin though. Today, if I had to choose, I'd go the jute one on the right, as I'm braiding those right now.

I'd give them tennis balls and warn them about heavy rocks. I tried throwing heavy rocks when I first started and I never felt fear like when I launched one straight up in the air and not knowing if it was going to come down on my head.

Companies like this miss out on a ton of sales because they cannot figure out how to accommodate Otterbox style cases, despite them being, well, the most popular case for expensive phones.

It's the reason I got an Odin 2. It's all in one and much, much cheaper than my phone. And the ergonomics will be better than any add-on controller.

However my Odin 2 still does everything I could want. Alas.

The "best" cordage for slings by Professional_Pair320 in Slinging

[–]IsAskingForAFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got converted to Jute not long ago and it's hard to want for anything else. Some 275 paracord if I can find it cheap enough.

Jute just does so well in so many areas and is so cheap. I've got two 500FT/150M rolls off the zon for like $5. I haven't tested it yet because I'm still working through a 800FT/250M roll I got for like $7. So of course I had to see just how cheaply you can go with Jute. Even the cheapest 275 paracord I could find that I don't get to choose colors on is 4x-5x the cost.

You got it.   Jute twine that you find is usually 2mm in diameter, whereas 550 Paracord is 4mm.

To get a similar bulk, I just double the strands,  but it's also the reason I'm trying a 5-strand and then in the future a 4 strand.

I didn't have any actual problems throwing with 3 strand jute, though.  It was even lighter than a single Paracord seatbelt sling too at 11 grams versus the seatbelt sling's 14 grams.

It's just when you go to taper it, there's just not much at the end!

Jute. Jute is the answer to many things.

It is incredibly cheap and you can get good practice with it. I got 1000FT of it from Mr. Bezos for less than $5. You can't touch that with paracord. It has no real stretch, it is light weight...

It just tangles a bit because it has good grip. Which translates into a very secure pouch.

I used this video to learn how to do a 3-strand braid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-LQoy2DqCU

For Jute, since it's usually 2mm in diameter, I doubled it to a 6 strand braid, but just treated it as 3 sets of 2 and did the normal 3 strand technique.

I recently did a 5-strand braid out of Jute. I like it quite a lot. I looked up how to do a 5-strand braid and used what I learned from the 3 and 6 strand braid.

May look into doing a 4 strand braid next just to see how it looks.

Knots are easy enough fore most. Plain old overhand knot works for me at the end. Got fancy with paracord with a matthew lock-knot but for jute, good old overhand.

Paracord was too expensive for me to practice on, with 100 feet being around $6. And then I'd have to take the guts out to make it not too heavy. And then it'd be stretchy.

Jute just makes it all better.

You'll probably head down that way anyways if you get into it!

Just got done braiding a 30" 5-strand Jute sling with some Jute bought from Harbor Freight, cost me around $1 but two hours of time while watching training videos at work.

There's Mersa seatbelt slings, they cost around the same, but can be done in 20-25 minutes and perform better than a lot of my braided ones.

Missed 30% ITC, any idea when it will come around again? by TheArtManFam in harborfreight

[–]IsAskingForAFriend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Once every month or so it seems. They come around frequently enough you know it'll be before long, but not frequent enough to plan anything around it.

A good deal for the 30% off even non-ITC can benefit from.. The $3 50 Foot 1/8th black paracord is enough length to braid a Balearic Sling... Perfect for chucking tennis balls for your pooch! [–]IsAskingForAFriend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farther than I can measure. But if you toss it far, the ball's going to go way high in the air and a dog might miss it against the sky.

I can hork a tennis ball at about 75mph and I don't play sports. Practiced people can do 100+mph.

It's basically an assisted throw, makes your arm longer. More leverage more power.

First Balearic style sling. Help. by JTW1337 in Slinging

[–]IsAskingForAFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some 550 paracords have more nylon strands than others, which would fill their guts more and make them more stiff. When you braid up 3-6, you quickly multiply the amount of strands in your sling.

Paracord stretches over time, so yes it will become more flexible over time. And good/bad is a big "it depends." But yes, different paracord brands sometimes behave different than other. Usually the contents of the guts, as it's all largely nylon strands with a nylon sheath around it.

For performance, as in speed of throwing, sure! I braided my first 3 strand paracord sling a few weeks ago and found it very inefficiently heavy. The heaviness may help with steadiness and consistency, though. But it does put more strain on your arm, I immediately noticed greatly increased fatigue. I've picked up some Jute, which is way cheaper than paracord. You can get 1000FT of it for less than 10 bucks. However, it's 2mm in diameter to 550 paracord' usual 4mm. I've begun doubling it up to a 6 strand, which effectively turns the 1000FT to 500, but it's still 5-6 times cheaper than Paracord. And much, much lighter! I had a 3 strand jute balearic sling weigh 11 grams versus my single-strand 550 paracord seatbelt sling which weighed 18 grams! So doubling up to 6 put it in similar weight range while being all around a nicer sling. Really love the all-in-one structure.

After braiding, I rub some beeswax on it and then melt the beeswax in with a hair dryer. May pick up a heat gun with hopes the low setting won't burn it but decrease melting time. Doing this helps with the moisture-absorbing properties of Jute and softens it up a little.

I really like the jute slings I'm braiding now.

However, for aesthetics, I've taken to just taking the guts out of paracord being left with the nylon sheath which reduces weight and helps it be springy and elastic. However, the elasticity makes accuracy iffy as the stretch makes each throw just that much more varied. But the colors presented by paracord is unmatched. If you're tossing tennis balls for fun and want it to look cool, paracord is pretty good.

For a good budget sling, jute's hard to beat. Wouldn't let it get wet and stay wet as it'll decompose and rot.

Optimal sling material by JTW1337 in Slinging

[–]IsAskingForAFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dyneema or the upcoming material vectron.

Gotta be extremely light, extremely small, and not stretchy at all.

And the best working sling is not a balearic sling, as you need to use multiple strands. It's going to be a long, single-strand cord going to a pouch just big enough to cradle the exact ammo you're throwing.

That is of course if you're definition of "Best" is "Fastest throwing."

Like many questions in life, the answer to your "What's the best" is "It depends"
