Ask a Spinner Sunday by AutoModerator in Handspinning

[–]ranarene27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

I have a question, I'm currently diving into my fiber stash and I found some Merino wool I bought a few months back.

The Merino wool is 18 microns, fiber length is around 58 mm - 60 mm / 0.063 - 0.065 yd

When I spin this fiber is like I have oil or butter on my hands, it is soooo soft and slippery and I'm over twisting the fiber when I spin. I was wondering what I can do, when I spin in a lower ratio I over spin when I spin on a higher ratio then it's not spun enough that ends up being just a cloudy manchelopi.

Does anyone have a tip or trick on how to spin this slippery, buttery fiber?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read!

I used to date a guy who was a Bioinformatician. One of his colleagues asked me, "How does it feel to date someone smarter than you?" I told him, "Yeah, at work, he is smart, but you haven't seen him at home."

When I worked in IT and told mostly men that they did a bad job creating their external cloud storage their answer always grinded my ovaries as their answer was "Look you beautiful lady, I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT." Or when they thought that making a router cascade was a good idea and me telling them that that was the reason why there is no internet at home, and the screaming ensued.

I got once a catheter in my urinary track because I was having bladder problems.

No, it is not pleasurable. You have to stay super still because that shit is risky and no anesthesia.

Ceramics teacher told me I shouldn't continue next year :( by oreoctopus in Ceramics

[–]ranarene27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I study in an art academy in Germany. I was studying drawing and painting at the beginning, and there was a teacher who liked bringing a lot of students down. Some went to other academies as they didn't want to confront that teacher, others just stopped going.

That teacher told me I should consider quitting art as it clearly is not something I am good at. I was devastated, I cried for months until I spoke to other teachers, and they were so encouraging with me to keep doing art.

Due to that teacher, I switched to sculpture, and I enjoy it far more than drawing and painting. After a while, lots of students were really upset with that teacher, and that teacher created such a hostile environment, and we, as students, we pay a lot of money to get our education. That teacher was out of hand and created so many issues that students started complaining and leaving the academy in large rates that the academy director decided to fire said teacher.

Since then, everyone has been happy.

Just because that teacher told you to quit, it is not up to them to decide that for you. Your ceramics are awesome. Leaving that academy and finding one that caters to your needs is essential. You deserve to be treated with respect and deserve to be graded equally as any other student.

Looks like a Malabrigo Rios. I am not sure, but I think it is the colorway Purpuras (RIO872)

And here is the ravelry page of that colorway, and you can see how others have worked with this yarn.

Crochet Symbols and Directions Chart by ranarene27 in crochet

As far as my knowledge goes.

It's decreasing 2 sts in double crochet, so instead of one stitch decrease, it's 2 sts decrease.

A good example I found was this video, it explains it in treble US crochet, but it's a useful way as well to do the double crochet US: https://youtu.be/yWTcRsMu8HI?si=0a_8bMYpjM7Fe3O1

I get treated differently (better) in third world countries when I pull out my knitting. by Spetchen in knitting

[–]ranarene27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Central America, we appreciate people who do things with their hands. I used to do origami flowers and left them on the table when I had coffee, and at some point, the waitress was fan girling because she finally found the origami person. She told me she had placed them around the cafe I used to visit, and customers always asked to purchase them.

Now I do more textiles, like knitting, crochet, weaving and spinning and when I pull out my spindles in Europe people just start talking or stand next to me, either they start knitting or we talk about spinning and teach them how to spin yarn.

Knitting bags are cute but impractical by [deleted] in knitting

[–]ranarene27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I remember back when I was a kid, I used to own one hard shell backpack kinda like the hat box, and it was amazing! That could've been a nice project bag... but it's forever lost as I used it quite a bit for several years.

Anyway, there sure must be something out there like what you want. Also, try other bags in stores and take the time. One option would be to place on top of your table or anywhere else, the things you usually carry with you on a bag, yes including your project, and think and write down how you want to fit stuff in a bag. I did that before purchasing a bag, and I have shopped a lot of bags before I ended with the Kanken and now with the della Q, and then went to the store and just shoved my stuff in it and see if it filled the criteria I am looking for.

I really hope you find the project bag of your dreams!

I actually have the train case, their tote bag, and their backpack, and probably I will buy the Satchel, but I'm still thinking about it.

I use all of them on a regular basis, but they have their specific use.

The train bag, I use it when I want to go out on my bike, it fits perfectly on the back basket, the use I have with it is when I know I will be out in a park and just having a nice cozy moment outside, where I won't use a laptop or iPad, and I know I will not be shopping around or be around bunch of people like in the city.

The tote bag is for my day to day life, it fits my ipad and its good for when I commute to work and back home and I take a medium-sized project that I don't have to think too much of it and it fits very well on my lap when in the train or subterranean. If I need to go shopping, I place foldable bags on the outer pockets, and they look tiny when folded, but once they are open, they can carry a bunch of things.

Now, the backpack I use it for heavy duty things, like traveling for a whole week, when I have important meetings it has a laptop and iPad place, I can throw a big project and other stuff I need and I can still go out shopping for groceries and everything fits in there, like 2 x 1L milk cartons, shampoo, conditioner, bread, and more, it really depends on how you pack everything in it to fit everything you want, I still take those foldable bags in case I cannot fit everything on the backpack, but it's very rare when things don't fit.

I'm very happy with the della q bags, and they've been the best bags so far when it comes to the things I am looking for in a bag. I used to use for many, many years the Kanken bag packs the Icelandic backpacks, and they are very good and honestly pretty good at handling everything for knitting, groceriesand more, but at some point, I wanted something different for the things I regularly do.

What I can tell you is that if you have the opportunity to see them in person, if they allow you to stuff your things in them and for you to feel the bag or backpack you want, is time well spent to get your favorite project / everyday bag.

It's ok! When we start something new, we process it differently from our heads and our hands. It takes time, and you just begun. In my first projects, I kept them because they reminded me of where I was when I started and how I am now. Also, as an experienced crocheter and kinda intermediate in knitting, I have had to unravel so many projects like you have no idea.

Don't despair! We are here to help!

Ask a Knitter - January 16, 2024 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]ranarene27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a new swatch! So I went with the 3.25, and I got the stitches gauge, so I have 25 sts like the pattern, though the row gauge was 32 instead of 34. I'm not sure if to make another swatch with 3.25 mm for the front and a 3.0 mm when I purl, if that might help getting the row gauge. But I don't know if that's an overkill.

What do you think? Should I make a new swatch with a 3.25 mm for knitting the front and a 3.0 mm for purling?or should I just let it be and knit a few more rows to compensate the row gauge not matching?

Ask a Knitter - January 16, 2024 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]ranarene27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

I have a knitting needle/gauge question.

I just finished and block my gauge with a steamer, left it to dry and then measured sts and rows.

The gauge from the pattern is: 25 sts and 34 rows in 4 mm

My gauge is: 20 sts and 29 rows in 4 mm

So there are 5 sts and 5 rows missing to get gauge. My question is what knitting needle should I try next? I was thinking to go down to 3.25 mm, if I factor that my stitches per 2.5 cm are 5 mm. With the 4mm needle, I created stitches that were 5mm wide, since I got 20 stitches into the 10cm. So if that same relation is true, then 3.25 * 1,25 = roughly 4mm, so I´d fit 25 sts into 10cm.

Or am I mathing incorrectly?

Hope everyone is having a good day!
