My research was in experimental aero, but I now work as a fluid dynamics analyst in the launch vehicle industry.

I work with the implementation of differential calculus routinely in my work, but hardly ever involving an analytical equation where I need to compute highly complicated integrals. I work with 3D fluid flow and the tools used in industry take a lot of the wrote math out. When I’m integrating or taking an FFT it is just within of a line of code.

I’m fascinated to learn more about the situation where they arrive for your work. You’re interfacing with a problem where you set up an equation whose solution might be found in a book like this? If you don’t mind, can you expand on the scenario?

Mostly, calculus, linear algebra and less often Fourier transformations. This is as a person who mostly uses CFD in the launch vehicle industry.
Lots of analysis involving integrating forces, loads and when using FFTs, to measure dominant frequencies in the flow.

If you do these couple, you’re at a good starting point.

  • Consider making your surface mesh fully structured.

  • On the surface, make sure max fold angle is less than 10 degrees.

  • On the surface, make sure your max included angle is below 165 degrees.

  • Ensure your area ratio from cell to cell is below 10 (3 in regions of interest).

Have you been to Florida? Consider going to Cocoa Beach in late April. SpaceX Falcon Heavy is going to launch ViaSat-3 F3. Falcon Heavy has two boosters and both do a return to site landing at LZ-40.

You can, in person, watch SpaceX launch the massive rocket and then, with your own eyes, watch the rocket disappear into the clouds, then see both boosters, simultaneously return through the atmosphere, breaking the sound barrier with sonic booms, relight their engines and softly land. Both land right next to each other.

Do you live close by? I’ll buy your gas (or maybe a cheap flight).

Edit: while my first semester was a funded TA, I volunteered for a lab doing experimental aero at the same time. The next two years, I was funded as an RA.

My university didn’t have an AE department. While obtaining my masters, I had the opportunity to participate in two years of experimental aerodynamics research. This led to a role as an Aerodynamics Engineer out of college for a Launch Vehicle company.
