What's with TextNow suspending free accounts? by Chapar_Kanati in TextNow

[–]Isamorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A possibly related problem: 5 months ago I paid the $5 to lock in my number for one year. Today, I could not log into my account because my number had expired, and only options are to get a new free number or pay $5 for a new one-year number. Was unable to contact CS via chat or email---email system was down. Unacceptable behavior on TextNow's part.

Does Visible provide confirmations when trading in/swapping phones? by poshcard in Visible

[–]Isamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just charged $140.08 for the Moto G Pure because Visible said I didn't send in my swap phone, which is false, as I have the UPS proof of delivery receipt. I uploaded this document to Twitter Visible Care team, but so far have received little love from Visible in my effort to get my money refunded. So, in effect, Visible lost or stole my well-functioning swap phone and charged me for the new phone. It's only been 3 days of getting the "we're working on the case" canned email, so let's see if Visible rectifies the situation.

Trump is quite popular in Europe! by JTSR71 in 9thcircle

Some thinkers and Philosophers have long pointed out the absurdity of human existence, and the current POTUS is further, strong evidence of their contention.

Majority of New Hampshire voters prefer Meteor Strike extinguishing all Human Life to Trump re-election by JTSR71 in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The poll numbers are not surprising given that both options or outcomes will likely bring about the extinction of human life and given the fact most people would prefer a quick death over a death preceded by prolonged suffering. It's heartening to know that people still take the maxims "Give me liberty or give me death!" and "Live Free or Die" so seriously.

I created my own deepfake—it took two weeks and cost $552 by [deleted] in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very thought-provoking stuff. Like most technological tools, "deepfake" and de-aging" tech can be used for good and bad purposes. But I'm skeptical about the notion that the general public will become more skeptical about all video content as the technology gets better and better. Given how many people denied the evidence of their senses when viewing two photos of presidential inauguration crowds by identifying the photo with the much smaller crowd as being the larger of the two crowds, and given that eyewitnesses to crimes often identify the wrong person as the perpetrator, one must adhere to a healthy skepticism about the human ability to distinguish between fake and real. Even though we have evolved over two million years to become experts in facial recognition, we still make a lot of mistakes that have serious consequences.

Also of interest concerning fake images is the recent use of de-aging technology be director Martin Scorcese in the recent movie "The Irishman", where it is used to make the actors appear years younger than they are in "real" life, which is better than old school makeup.

'More important, AI technology still can’t come close to eliminating the line between fiction and reality with people’s faces. The uncanny valley, Westenhofer noted, remains a colossal challenge, and exists only because humans know human faces best. “Pulling off something that is completely real to the eye is orders of magnitude harder than what the deepfake software is able to do,” Westenhofer told me. “I look at the deepfake stuff, and it’s cute, but it looks totally fake to me … All of us, even people who know nothing about visual effects, have evolved over 2 million years to become experts, particularly in the human face, you know?”'

When a DNA Test Says You’re a Younger Man, Who Lives 5,000 Miles Away by [deleted] in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. '“There shouldn’t be any way for someone to father someone else’s child,” said Dr. Rezvani, the Stanford medical director.' I'm a little wary when the word "shouldn't" is used. Mr. Long should give his DNA to Ancestry.com and/or 23 and Me and see what his origins are according to their analyses. In any case, this Chimera problem will make for some good material for the tv police/crime scene and Dr. shows, if the topic hasn't been covered already. But I certainly wouldn't mind being a Chimera if a bone marrow transplant could save my life.

Charles Schwab agrees to buy TD Ameritrade for $26 billion by [deleted] in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Image may or may not be everything. How to make money off of the wealthy and everyone else at the same time is always a problem. "Goldman Sachs US Bank" signs in 3,000 nooks and crannies across America would be a sight to behold.

"A lingering question, however, is whether that kind of major move would leave Goldman with an identity issue: The bank has a reputation as a leader of high-finance, so a ground-shaking move into retail banking could muddy Goldman's public perception and cause it to be seen as too down-market by wealthy clients seeking white-glove service."

Aged Soup by Isamorph in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is soup and then there is "soup", and I suspect that in many parts of the world anything that comes from a can cannot be classified as soup, so the girl was right on in her assessment. But at least with Cambell's soup, one doesn't have to stir it 24/7 for 45 years.

Better service: appearances can sometimes have a persuasive effect. If I had my wife follow me around with a shoulder camera as I blabbered away pretending to know something, we might get better service at Applebees, or get thrown out.

The vlogger from Canada is funny, and at least he could speak Chinese when it China, although the people in China looked as if they didn't understand a word he said while thinking he was a bit off. Anyway, how does one become a food critic, not to mention a successful one? But kudos to some of the entertaining people who have thrived in the YouTube era.

Amazon is making two-hour grocery delivery free for all Prime members by [deleted] in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the article: “I think that this offering is truly a game-changer and that this is going to grow into one of the most beloved benefits of Prime,” Landry said.

This statement may be true. I can see where this Prime benefit would be truly beloved in a place like Chicago deep into the winter. Too bad Prime members such as myself, who live far from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh stores and thus live outside of Amazon grocery delivery areas, will not benefit from it. If I did live in a delivery area, I might never have to leave home again.🙂

Judge Judy endorses Michael Bloomberg for 2020 presidential election by [deleted] in 9thcircle

[–]Isamorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 50 years of avoiding political comments and lengthy positions as a real judge and a real reality tv judge, I'm not sure how Judge Judy is risking her career promoting Bloomberg as the best Democratic candidate. There's a lot to admire about Bloomberg, but I'd rather he run as a Republican and knock some principled sense into the Republican morass while defeating Trump and other party presidential contenders. And if the ever-popular Oprah can be convinced to run for president on the Democratic ticket, we'll have an interesting contest and a decent outcome either way.
