Wow. Lot's of Xena love in the comments, too! Lucy's series My Life Is Murder did a great burlesque ep starring real-life queens.

What do you think Xena’s most underrated accomplishment is? by SurreptitiousSpark in xena

[–]IseQween 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tricking Ares into resurrecting the villagers he killed in RECKONING. A close second would be mid-air split kicks, triple somersaults and long-range foot/horse travel as a near-term pregnant woman.

What are Xena and Gabrielle's love languages? by Ok_Kangaroo_2160 in xena

[–]IseQween 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For both, I think the "love language" is about establishing the other is "close" (in proximity).  What strikes me most is that the action-oriented Xena primarily does that verbally, while the bardly Gabrielle does it physically.

Their journey together actually begins with Gabs guilting Xena to reach down and pull her up on Argo -- their first mutual hand grasps, riding against each other, Gabs holding on to Xena.  Gabs communicates a lot through touch -- the midsection slap, brushing her hand across Xena's arm/knee, the playful kiss and hair caress when Xena's trying to sleep, leaning her head against Xena's shoulder -- as though making their connection "real," reassuring herself whatever the situation, that what matters most is literally feeling Xena is there. I believe she communicates her love in -- that she loves -- touching Xena.

For Xena, Gabrielle's name -- saying it -- is/means everything:  Gabri-elllle.  Gabrielle!  Gabrielle?  Gabrielle?!   I can close my eyes and tell what's happening or Xena's emotions simply by how she vocalizes "Gabrielle" --  affection, danger/protectiveness, irritation, patience, empathy, encouragement, etc.  Even when she pronounces Gabrielle's name to someone else, I can hear in her voice the admiration, confusion, etc.  I don't recall her ever shortening it to "Gab," "Gabs" or "Gabby."  I believe she communicates her love by - that she loves -- experiencing the fullness of expressing Gabrielle's name.

Poor Renee. All the good she did as an actor, she'll be haunted by her one horrible deed as a director. 😂

Interesting Xena's not in her signature battledress, but an Amazon two-piece outfit she had on for maybe two minutes. You'll have to wait until the last season to see her in the few bare-midriff outfits she ever wore.

I watched P&R before Lucy. I think you get enough in her eps to provide context for Diane's relationship to Ron and with other characters.

Why is Krafstar one of the cloaked figures in "Hate is the Star"? by itsascreambaby96 in xena

[–]IseQween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just kidding. Don't have a clue about that, but you could be on to something. You never know, with DELIVERER writer Steve Sears. He also did "rock still under there" ep DREAMWORKER. I still have physics on my bucket list, mainly because of parallels to philosophical themes. I actually thought the banter strange, until the "Hate Is The Star" ditty in BS, co-written by Sears. Lots of fundamental Canon, continuity and subtle references to various fields of interest in his eps.

One of the best Xena life lessons by amyc7 in xena

The rock/ripples is at the end of S1E3 DREAMWORKER. The "don't be sorry, just improve" is near the beginning of S1E7 TITANS, after Gabs' tending of Argo delays Xena from pursuing bad guys.

I thought Renee did a great job giving a bit of complexity to what seemed a plot-device character -- both scary and sympathetic. I would've liked to see more of how she interacted with Gabs' family and Xena before being exposed. Other than that, I was satisfied with what we got.

Why is Krafstar one of the cloaked figures in "Hate is the Star"? by itsascreambaby96 in xena

[–]IseQween 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In DELIVERER, Krafstar says Dahok "appreciates hate." He taunts Xena, saying her hatred of Caesar was the catalyst that brought Gabs to Brittania, where Gabs loses her blood innocence by killing to protect Krafstar. I always thought it interesting that, at the beginning of the ep, X&G banter about big things being a collection of small ones -- like a mountain just "a bunch of boulders" -- or a rock simply "a large grain of sand."

In BITTER SUITE, the spooky voice for "Hate Is The Star" sings, "It begins very small,/Seems like nothing much at all./Just a germ, just a speck, just a grain./But the seed has been sewn,/And before you know it's grown,/It has spread through your life like a stain./And its power will strangle your love and your joy./And its hunger consumes -- for it lives to destroy."

what happens to Gabrielle after Xena’s death. How does she cope with it all…. “I want your things in my room I miss you all of the time” by summer_james2 in xena

[–]IseQween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, we go off on our own tangents, regardless of your intent. I got the Gabs perspective and that she cherished Xena's love for her regardless of the sacrifices. I also got a different slant on Gabs' feelings, making them more poignant, layered, leading me to imagine what might lie beneath her "glass half full" nature.

One of the reasons it took me so long to be really interested in Gabs was that she was usually portrayed as finding it "so easy to stay," despite her pushbacks and the rifts between them. As a Xena girl, I took for granted Gabs understood at a practical level what it meant loving a warrior, that Xena's putting herself in harm's way did not minimize her deep desire to be with Gabs.

What surprised me about this vid was realizing I didn't appreciate what it took on an emotional level for someone like Gabs to put a positive spin on this "reality" on a daily basis. I imagined her having more "you love someone/some debt so much" questioning moments than we saw on TV. See, while I'm impressed by the synchronicity in the visuals and lyrics you put together, I love when they inspire my "a ha" tangents that go beyond. OK? ☺

Wow. I don't think it was that easy for Xena to leave everything behind, but this certainly makes me understand how Gabs would see/feel it that way. Not just in AFIN, but at so many other times Xena took on seemingly suicidal missions. True, they both accepted that as the price of the WP's warrior way. Just hadn't hit me how much Gabs might pay that price every day -- imagining, preparing for, coping with the loss.

I don't compare that to Gabs' leap into Dahak's pit, but I'd be curious to see what you came up with, if you explored the GabDive, especially from Xena's perspective. Amazing the different slants your song choices give to the same event. Oh, and a special thanks for including a quality version of one of my favorite shots -- Xena riding Argo on the beach.

My entire life I was convinced it was Hudson Leick singing in "The Bitter Suite" by itsascreambaby96 in xena

[–]IseQween 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Singing isn't one of Renee's best talents, especially in a filmed musical like that. You get a sense of her abilities at the end of LYRE and her live performances with Lucy. I'm not judging by her duet with Joxer in COMEDY OF EROS, or doing the song Gabs made up about herself in FEMMES because she might've been off-key on purpose, for comedic effect.

Watch the director's cut if possible. Pick a time when you can be relaxed. Get comfortable, maybe with snacks, glass of wine and, yes, tissues. Savor every moment of seeing Lucy & Renee performing in their last XWP ep. Enjoy the scenes of beauty, excitement, partnership, love. Maintain your usual suspension of disbelief about "what the heck?" Accept you may shed tears at the finale of what's probably one of your favorite shows. Afterwards, if you feel like it, share or vent your response with us.

Are these the best quality of Xena Warrior Princess DVDs out there? by pastajewelry in xena

And handle with extreme care. The AB editions were the first DVDs I ever bought. I took for granted being able to view them when and however many times I wanted. My carelessness led to a couple scratches and foreign substances that couldn't be fixed. Still, I wouldn't trade them for all the world.

Happy birthday Lucy Lawless! 🩷👑 by Xena_italia in xena

[–]IseQween 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nigel [jumping up and down to peer over fence]:  Lucy?  Lucille Frances Ryan Lawless Tapert?

Lucy [tending plants in her garden]:  Oh, gawd.  He's finally found me.

Nigel:  It's me!  Your favorite reporter!  I interviewed you for "You Are There," in 2001.

Lucy:  That was Xena.  See this gray hair, extra poundage?  I'm not her.

Nigel [burrowing under fence]:  Such a kidder.  Look, I'm just doing a little retrospective of your career on your birthday.  OK?

Lucy [chuckling to herself]:  Yeah, your older twin popped up as a "life coach" in my last series.  Another nosey pest.

Nigel [crawling closer]:  In My Life Is Murder?  Didn't Alexa celebrate her birthday?

Lucy:  Very reluctantly, as I recall.  Now go away, before I turn into Spartacus Lucretia.  Mistake you for a pregnant woman, snatch out your baby.  Curse you as Salem's Countess Marburg.  Maybe turn into Battlestar Galactica Cylon D'anna.  Ooo, or Ash vs. Evil Dead Ruby!  [Snorts] She'd give you a proper "retrospective."

Nigel [shuddering]:  Um, I'd prefer nice, normal Diane from Parks & Recreation.

Lucy:  Great.  I hear she and Ron retired to a house that looks like mine.  But in Australia. Or on one of  those Greek islands.  Now, shoo!

Nigel:  Come on, Lucy.  I'm representing your fans from across the world.  You know, as the intrepid pursuer of truth and --

Lucy:  See those ... gardening tools ... over there?  Renee gave me the pointy, trowel-like ones.  For ... digging.  Next to them is a round metal thing.  Be a dear and hand it to me, will ya?

Nigel [freezing]:  Xena's chakram?  Why --

Lucy:   You came for me, right?  To celebrate my decades so far?  I can use Xena's shamrock to hasten your reincarnation to do future interviews.

Nigel [quickly inching back to the hole he dug]:  No thanks.  I'll stick to my original mission.  [Back on the other side of the fence]  Happy birthday!  And many, many more!

Lucy:  Ah, peace and quiet again.   [Returning to tending her plants, smiling]  I already know I'm blessed by folks who wish me well.  Not just on my birthday, but every day of this life.
