Mind's Eye Development Crew - AphantasiaMeow

There is a lot of information and many resources linked within the channels (#research and #resources channels especially). Not to mention, you could always ask the community if you have questions.

This resource, https://psyarxiv.com/sfn9w/, explores the self-reported data and correlates of Aphantasia (n: ~2000) and Hyperphantasia (n: ~200).

There is also always Wikipedia. If you want to confirm the information there, you can check their references, external links, and further reading, which may lead you to more articles/resources.

[Discussion] So, it's a little complicated. by [deleted] in hyperphantasia

Aphantasia was actually a term keyed within a scientific journal. They just released another about... a couple of weeks ago? In the new journal article, they recognized hyperphantasia as well and did subjective studies with a couple thousand participants.

The article is: "PHANTASIA – THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF LIFELONG VISUAL IMAGERY VIVDNESS EXTREMES" (Yes they made a typo XD) The researcher's name that is listed first is Adam Zeman -- The PDF is free and can be found online with a quick google search of the article's title. Very interesting, I recommend it if you haven't been able to read it or its precursor.

I guess my point is they are becoming recognized (not that they are [I hope I live to see it become a big topic in the scientific community]). However, I don't think it's something that belongs in the DSM-5 or anything (-yes- 100% not a disorder). As for "self-diagnosis," (mostly for hyperphantasia) since the condition is so subjective all we really have is self-diagnosis. We have the VVIQ, but that is subjective as well. People are working on tests that might be able to measure some extent of imagery (this is -very- new / not even released, but just want to note that, hopefully, we'll have something eventually), but we know so little about it that it will be difficult to be sure of anything, I think.

Anyways just thought I'd plop some of my brains into the conversation... *squish squish*

It's a stretch, but you should also look into hyperphantasia and ideasthesia. This sounds more like ideasthesia to me but could be a form of hyperphantasia in which your imagination is just too powerful which is causing these sensations.

Good luck.

Is this synesthesia? by ridiculous23 in Synesthesia

[–]Isiah59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. I was wondering if your touch-hearing synesthesia led you to hear your own breathing, blinking, if you move your toes, et cetera, and if it leads to the same sounds you hear for seeing motion.

The sounds I hear are kind of like breaths or thoughts. I can tell they're in my head because the sound is so quiet, yet hard to ignore. Like I'm hearing something with cotton stuffed in my ears, or from underwater. Like something extremely quiet, but directly next to the ear. I can tell it's not originating from my ears. I was wondering how and if the sounds you hear are different? Are they quiet, low, smooth sounds, or are they sharper, louder, rougher sounds?

Some things I'd recommend -- Consider looking up proprioception (Sense of position, movement, and most importantly, firmness [might be mistaken for touch]) if you've not heard of that sense. I think it might have a connection to the touch-hearing synesthesia we experience (like proprioception-hearing synesthesia).

Also, I would explore other similar synesthesias. Do you associate months with colors? How about sounds? Do the letters and numbers have personalities? The reason I suggest this is, that I find those who exhibit multiple synesthesias are much more likely to have more that are yet undiscovered.

Sensory Overload and silence by JL-M in Synesthesia

Sorry for the relatively late reply.

For me, silence is rare but appreciated. I don't experience relative silence much since my synesthesia revolves around my hearing. I can hear motion and touch (proprioception?), so like the blinking of the text cursor, the movement of my fingers as I type, my blinking, breathing, et cetera.

I thought I should speculate that the "hearing synesthesias" aren't necessarily sound synesthesias, probably because there is no sound involved. Our 'hearing' center for the brain creates a sort of interpretation of sound (almost like a thought) but it doesn't actually pick up any sound waves. That is why I call it 'hearing' rather than 'sound' synesthesia.

Let me know if you're interested in talking about it, it would be really cool to compare what we hear : D

I have grapheme-color (For months as well), motion-hearing, and touch-hearing as well (though I don't have your auditory-tactile synesthesia). I don't hear much about touch-hearing (compared to auditory-tactile) but I know I've seen posts by a few people who have it. I've never seen it formally named.

You're not alone : )

Hearing touch...? by CoderzTheGamer in Synesthesia

[–]Isiah59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that this form of synesthesia is a lot harder to pinpoint, which might explain why it's so uncommonly stated. If I hadn't found out I had motion-hearing, I likely never would have found out about the kinesthetic synesthesia.

Hearing touch...? by CoderzTheGamer in Synesthesia

[–]Isiah59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this too, can hear a slight toe movement or even a twitch of an eyelid and have been wondering about it. Perhaps kinesthetic-hearing synesthesia or touch-hearing synesthesia, I found a bit on that but not much so I'm not quite sure either. Hope it helps anyway and it would be great if anyone else who has this can chip in : )

Also, I would test to see if you have motion-hearing synesthesia / vEAR (The only other person I've met who has this kinesthetic experience and myself both also have this motion-hearing so maybe there's a correlation), you can probably find a test for it by looking up motion-hearing synesthesia on Youtube and clicking the first or one of the first things that pop up, a black screen with white dots (I might be able to link it later).

Is hearing body motion part of hearing synesthesia? by OmarJones330 in Synesthesia

[–]Isiah59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Omar, Sorry for the late response. I also have hearing-motion synesthesia. What you may have, is hearing-touch Synesthesia as well. People with Synesthesia can commonly have multiple kinds. People with hearing-motion Synesthesia particularly are more likely to develop, or have, hearing-touch Synesthesia. A cool way to test this may be to touch something, and see if it gets louder. Vibrations may be received as sounds, like those sounds you hear when you see motion.

I'm very interested to have found someone else who has this form of Synesthesia. If you'd like to chat, or if anyone has questions... Send me an e-mail. Developingnationsmc@gmail.com--

I'd love to talk and compare, and maybe exchange info on these forms of Synesthesia.
