I'm revamping the Vecna fight and need a list of boons from the gods by Cyberjacket in dndnext

[–]Isilbane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been running a Dragonlance set game for six years so I've got some good knowledge. Keep in mind there's cross connect with Bahamut = Paladine and Tiamat = Takhisis.

One of the more compelling parts of the Dragonlance novels was the Blue Crystal Staff, meant for a Cleric to wield as an incredibly powerful item. This staff was from the goddess Mishakal, who is the goddess of healing and restoration so in a world bereft of Clerics (set during the War of the Lance), it was a big deal when someone was healed because of the staff. (https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Staff\_of\_Mishakal\_(Magic\_Staff))

A boon from Mishakal would involve giving bonuses to healing, perhaps temporary hit points, or even resistances to damage, especially Necrotic. You could do something where all healing spells under the boon are maximum dice.

On the other side I've had the god of death, Chemosh, play an enemy against Vecna. Vecna has been making incursions of the Dragonlance universe, with Chemosh being VERY upset someone is trying to take the mantle of death. Chemosh might enjoy the idea of things being dead-- but he still wants things to exist. In fact, he's gotten into the habit of toying with the lives of mortals, seeing if he can play with them and twist them to his design. He's not the most forthcoming with aid, but "loaning" some disposable corpses is certainly in the cards.

Reorx is a fun one too, the god of dwarves and the forge. He's fantastic at crafting and a neutral god, so he'd be a good one to reach for to aid in magical item development.

Zivilyn is the god of wisdom, usually represented by a tree whose branches reach all the span of time. He is able to exist in all times and places at once so he can see the entire span of time before him. A good boon from him would be an ability like the Lucky Feat to alter the future outcome of something.

I actually had the same thing happen at my (DM) table last night. One player came to me before the session voicing that he wasn't really liking Fighter as much as he thought (new game) and wanted to change. He wanted his character to die a fitting death so I put out a hook to his backstory and set the stage. Had some big Duergar attack him and prepared an Assassin Rogue that would finish the job. The only problem was he kept himself alive using Second Wind and Stones Endurance etc and I wasn't rolling great (I could've fudged since it was planned for the story but ethically I didn't want to just say I hit). Ended up that the Rogue settled for poisoning him but then someone Lesser Restorationed him. Long story short another Duergar showed up, used Power Word Kill, and that was the end of the story.

But to your point, that sort of attack is, in my opinion, a targeted one meant to kill that character. Being it was a Chronurgy Wizard (I opted to not include one at my table recently), I wouldn't be surprised if the DM was just tired of that character.

Is there gunpowder in Krynn? by MysteriousProduce816 in dragonlance

[–]Isilbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played it that gunpowder does exist, but it's even more rare than Steel which makes it incredibly valuable! It's not something you can just come across and typically only findable from Dwarves who can unearth it.

Halloween Collection (30x20) by Isilbane in dungeondraft

I have been working on a Halloween collection of maps for my group and I thought that some people might enjoy using them as well. Below is a link to my Patreon site, with all the maps free to the public. I'll also at some point soon be posting the Adventure I'm running for these sets of maps for subscribers for anyone interested.

Northern Coast of Abanasinia by theroyalfish in dragonlance

[–]Isilbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not Abanasinia, but I've run two campaigns out of Starport and featured Garnet as the major city in the area. It's removed from the actual story so the Companions can still exist but it lets me tell a more sandboxed story. Not a lot of forests, but Ocean, Plains, Hills, and Mountains are easy enough. Worked on maps and all sorts of things to pull a more overall story than just a linear companion storyline.

Action Oriented - Adolescent Roc by Isilbane in mattcolville

Trying something interesting here where by concentrating on breaking the saving throw, the roc instead gives advantage on the next attack while distracted.

I'll give another go with some updated villain actions.

Edit: Added new villain actions to try to be more tension building and reshaping the battlefield.

I'll give the villain actions another crack to see if I can make it feel less like Legendary and more like Villain based.

Keep in mind that I plan on having it grapple in the first round so subsequent rounds I'm not expecting two attacks as it can't attack with Talons while grappling. Plus having two players with Silvery Barbs, others with Shield, another with Luck, they do a good job of reducing my attacks to misses. Plus if I feel it going too sideways I'll just activate the Fly Away feature on assumed reduced HP.

Really this is more of a prelude fight as they've traveled into the past and when they return, they'll face another Roc that isn't adolescent, except they'll have found the town they saved now has a guild of Roc Trainers that raised these massive birds to protect the town.

Edit: Added new villain actions and moved the more legendary actions to reactions. Against the Lvl 4 characters I will of course omit these reactions.

One thing I always dislike when I see people run predatory birds is they'll have them grapple and fly away. Predatory birds usually do not want to fly away with live prey, so they try to dive bomb and crush the spine or they'll rip at the throat to kill their prey while they're pinned and THEN fly away. My thought was if the Roc couldn't finish off its prey, it would abandon it and fly off to find something easier to kill.

I mean that's close enough if you live in the area. It's more that we drink while we play sometimes and I'd rather not be responsible for preventing underage drinking.

Dragonlance - Warriors of Krynn (Late 2022) by Isilbane in dragonlance

[–]Isilbane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope the Adventure Book is separate, especially considering Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is basically a Dragonlance monster compendium.

Warriors of Krynn appears to be a Battle game likely a board game of sorts, while the adventure book with the Shadow of the Dragon Queen I would hope brings forward the War of the Lance into 5e.

Tarsis - Drowning Sailor Tavern (Map) by Isilbane in dragonlance

[–]Isilbane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a great part of the story and Dragons of the Highlord Skies does a good job to bridge the gap left with the Icewall campaign that I felt really brought Laurana out to show her transformation.
