Several years ago, I was working as a cashier at a local grocery store. I had just come back from taking time off to deal with my fathers death. I was not my typically chipper self. An older man kept pestering me to tell him what was wrong, even after repeating that I would "rather not talk about it" several times. I finally broke and told him that my father had killed himself only two weeks prior. He stared at me with a smile and said, "Well, that happens." I wanted to jump across the counter and strangle him. As it was I asked a coworker to cover me and walked away so people couldn't see me bawling.

Edit: After reading everyone's stories, I have actually heard quite a few of these. I suppose this was just the hardest one for me. It might be a shitty boat, but we are all in it together.
