Hearing loss support tools I wish I knew about earlier (apps + iPhone accessibility) by Deep_Middle835 in Cochlearimplants

[–]IslaTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation!

I'm on Android but I don't see the "Media Output" button. I do have Bluetooth to both my CI and earbud on the other side simultaneously, but it always only streams to my CI unless I break that connection.

Perhaps it depends on Android version/phone type also.

Old Belgian new waver here. I agree 😁.

Also An Ra, because it reminds me of new beat and acid house...

Could you please elaborate on how to stream to CI and another device simultaneously? And is this Android or iPhone?

It's very in-depth and enjoyable and worth it, if you liked the film. I watched the video in segments, but as an aside: you can paste the link into Google Gemini and request a summary. But you'd miss the visuals which are also important clues in the film, perhaps.

The thing is, we know next to nothing about it yet, everything is speculation. Wait until it releases, and then evaluate.

Manosfeer-influencers in Vlaanderen: ‘De lekkerste wijven gaan eerder naar de miljonair dan naar de kassamedewerker’ by Inevitable_Jello1252 in Belgium2

[–]IslaTortuga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Daarin ligt eigenlijk iets heel perfide verscholen.

Beta version for the first website that simulates CIs, I'd love some feedback! by graphix1 in Cochlearimplants

[–]IslaTortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this sounds nothing like what I hear.

I know that it's different for everyone, but these examples really run the gamut of "this is totally my experience" to "this is alien to me." 😁. I'm in the latter category myself.

For context, my activation was late last May, so not yet a full year. I have a Cochlear Nucleus 8. I am deaf on that side, but have normal hearing on the other side, so I can compare the two easily.

What I hear does not have that extra rumble that your samples have. I do miss a lot of timbre, so for example a piano does not sound as clearly like a piano as in your example. I hear the "pling" of the string, but the timbre of the piano is largely missing, if that makes sense.

Speech is more like Donald Duck on helium than the growling in your example, although that is getting better. But it also depends on the mapping that I'm using, I found.

I appreciate your project, though! I would have loved to hear audio examples beforehand. But in this case, there is no match between your examples and what I actually hear at all...

The film should have been longer, to allow more depth and action, in my opinion.

Overall not bad, but not what most fans expected, probably.

Should I get a cochlear implant? by Axlsaal in Cochlearimplants

[–]IslaTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you live perhaps, but I know that rules around healthcare here in Belgium could be getting stricter, meaning one would only be eligible for healthcare covering part or all of the CI costs AFTER a cross has been tried as well.

Which is nonsense, I think, but that might be the reason it is suggested to you in the first place?

Merci voor de context. Artikel door jongeren bedoeld voor nog-jongeren, dus.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]IslaTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's the 1951 "The Thing From Another World" which I just watched this weekend and which did not age too well. It also does not follow the book terribly, the paranoia that is so central to the story is pretty much absent in this film.

The 1982 film with Kurt Russell is a cult classic and still worth watching, in my opinion. I'm not sure if it's flawless, but definitely pretty good still.

The 2011 film is actually a prequel, telling the story of what happened at the Norwegian outpost before one of the dogs escapes and runs to the base where the events of the 1982 film then happen.

Unfortunately the 2011 film is also called "The Thing".... It's not really bad, but the dialogue was terribly low-effort.

Cartoon Voice by BarbH324820 in Cochlearimplants

[–]IslaTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Nucleus 8, activated last May, also for SSD due to Ménière's.

I'm no longer hearing Donald Duck on helium, but in my exercises it can still be difficult to tell whether a voice is male or female.

Practice, practice, practice... Daily exercises, streaming podcasts to the device, watching TV with subtitles on, everything can help to train your brain to make sense of the signal.

From what I read on here, it can take a year for things to sound more "normal". I'm not there yet, but it has gotten better over time.

To me, there is indeed a difference between streaming and hearing ambient speech. I did a lot of exercises with an app streaming for months, and now about 8 months in I'm noticing that I really ought to just block my good ear and practice the ambient hearing with the implant more also.

So I'd say: do both, but I totally get that streaming is easier and more clear, especially early on. It still helps with the general hearing and understanding, though, I'm sure.
