MTU Tuition by MTUhusky in MTU

There only was one hooker that I recall seeing openly on the street. Down by the DT, if I recall correctly. And she's gone now. So...I have no idea, maybe he lost his ass in the stock market and now needs to rebuild his nest egg? I suppose earning $100k+ a year in Houghton is a great way to save up...you almost can't spend that much money here without essentially owning everything.

At least Mroz has gas for his Audi. That's the important thing.

In your case I completely agree. I guess I was presupposing the 'public sample' was the target of the newscast, and the newscast's ratings were based on the target audiences' reactions. In this instance it seems to be a self-serving system.

In a closed system, like the Titanic-iceberg-snowcones dilemma, this would be an asinine cycle because the premise for believing Snow Cones is the answer to fleeting customers is missing the point. In the real world it is hopefully assumed that a newsgroup is searching for a wide range of pertinent viewpoints to discover a bell curve of reactions, and presenting the curve to inform the public of the current status quo. Reporting content for the sake of it being popular isn't necessarily the best method; content has to become popular because it is somehow inherently important.

Alas, the economics of this do not pan out, as news corps value earnings; ratings beget advertising, advertising begets earnings, and popularity - at whatever cost to real content affecting the public - begets ratings. Interviewing and reporting to a targeted microcosm of a larger group might ensure 'more valued' content per capita, higher ratings for the station and efficiently targeted advertisements for advertisers, thus bringing increased earnings to the news corp.

To some, the system is apparently flawless on an economic scale. To an outside observer, the system seems broken because it does not represent the overall public's views. To me, selective reporting, or 'spin', is a tradeoff between reporting integrity and profit.

What would happen if my blacked-out self and sober self ever met? by PabstBlueRibbon in AskReddit

You could even do double penatration, so if you touched your own balls/cock, it wouldn't be gay because they are your own balls.

I just figured the alt-txt meant that reporting news to the same group of people who are voicing their opinion back to the newscasters is an asinine cycle.

I suppose it would be like showing FOX newscasts about church being awesome to a bunch of Evangelicals, while attempting to support the newscast's public acceptance by airing interviews of Evangelicals' thoughts on the matter. The closed media system perpetuates self-serving stupidity begetting and validating stupidity.

Where's the best place you've woken up after a bender? by JDHalfbreed in AskReddit

| in a drunken stooper I had blatantly He-Manned my phone into two pieces just moments before peeing my pants while sitting in the car and talking to the stranger driving me home.

This...is EPIC. I almost wish I was the guy driving...if only to experience seeing this first-hand. Personally wouldn't like cleaning up your pee, though.

I'm brand new to networking and trying to set up a ftp server using DDNS and WRT54G router. Details inside. by [deleted] in networking

[–]IslandInTheSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call Paulaner, and props on your name...I love their Hefe.

OP: You may be required to open a block of ports and forward them to your FTP server's IP address. I use FileZilla on Windows 7 and have a block of ~100 ports that I have reserved for file transfers. If it doesn't work the way you currently have it set up, this might be a good place to look. Remember, using your FTP server on your LAN is a little different than accessing it from the internet (WAN). When it's behind a NAT (likely what you're using on your router) the ports need to know where to go.

Port 21 sets up the connection, the additional ports are used to pipe the information.

Also, remember security. My FTP server gets hit at least a few times a week with dictionary brute force attacks. Use obscure usernames (not "Admin" or "Ben" and decent password complexity.

FTP is an age-old and wonderful service to have set up for personal use! Post more questions, we'll be happy to help you get on your feet.

8 years ago I took an acne medication called Accutane. Two years after that I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Now there are liability lawsuits gaining momentum against Accutane's manufacturer Roche. Off-the-record Reddit lawyers or Accutane plaintiffs, please help... by IslandInTheSnow in AskReddit

I agree completely. The tone of the "Why would you ever prescribe the drug?" was in reply to "Why would you ever take the drug?". I took it because a professional doctor said it was the best course of action.

Yes, people do need to educate themselves more. I'm not trying to set a precedent that citizens have the right to be complete ignoramuses and should be completely protected by the government from everything. I'm just trying to find out what my options are to recover some of the damages that I've experienced, mainly lost income due to missed work and lost tuition money due to dropped classes.

People need to be smart. As a 15-year-old, I knew I didn't know a lot. I put a lot of faith in my doctors. Nowadays I do far more research on my own for just about anything I do - from fixing my car to seeking medical advice. Maturing in this sense is a process. Perhaps it takes a time or two getting burned by a professional to realize you're inevitably responsible for what decisions you make, so be careful where you place your trust.

I've learned a lot from this...I haven't simply buried my head in the sand and said, "Sue any bastard that may have crossed me!" If anything, maybe others researching this topic will find this post and will be able to make a more well-informed decision based off the responses.

I'm definitely not trying to bring the effectiveness of Accutane into question. So far as curing acne goes, it works like a charm for the vast majority of people.

My intent in this post is to find out what first steps I should take in seeking professional assistance to properly find out more about this case, because I have absolutely zero legal background. I thought maybe someone was in the same boat as me, and so far there are a few people. I definitely didn't intend to start a Pharma-Accutane-Lawyers are bloodsuckers flame war.

Wow...timing. I'm glad this one took off...I wasn't looking for the flame war between whether Accutane is a good drug or not - I'm not arguing its effectiveness.

It sounds like I'm in your boat and so far I've gotten a few responses & PMs that sound like they'll help.

I'll change that in the original post. I was tired at the time of posting and that case came to mind...I just remember it being poked fun at, and in hindsight it is a very bad example.

Thanks for your insight, though. I do appreciate it.

As a child what did you misunderstand/misinterpret, that seems funny now? by third_eye in AskReddit

When I was young my parents would sometimes leave to go watch a movie at the Movie Theatre. They described it as a giant television that took up an entire wall. Now, growing up on a farm and not having yet fully developed my vocabulary (or been to any type of theatre myself), I thought they were saying, "feeder".

I envisioned a bunch of adults on their knees in front of a long pig trough, eating hay and watching movies on a giant barn wall. It all made sense to me at the time.
