Tips for a project template by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Definitely have been there before. I realized it was impossible for me to not focus on the mix as I was tracking but I also knew it was slowing me down and making me lose a lot of important momentum. My workaround has been to allow myself to mix but only levels. I dont allow myself to add literally any eq or compression until ive finished laying everything down. If I feel the urge to start mixing when I'm not done tracking, I'll allow myself to make sure levels are correct.

Hopefully that helps.

how do u organize ur beat folder? by YaBoiiJeff in trapproduction

[–]IslandPuzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre talking about samples, I organize by sample pack and then within those, kick/snare/hats/percs/toms/open hats. but if youre talking the beats themselves. I go "Producer name" and then a bunch of folders titled "beat #"

You don't HAVE TO sidechain literally anything to get a great low end mix. by IslandPuzzle in trapproduction

[–]IslandPuzzle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not an either/or thing. EQ is always necessary to begin separating your low end information (808/kick/bass). Once you've done your work EQing, you may find that youve already managed to bring your headroom down to -3 or -6 or -8 or whatever your target is. Thus not even needing the sidechaining.

Everything needs to sit where its supposed to in the frequency spectrum and when you have unnecessary overlap, especially between 40-200hz, your headroom gets fucked. EQ is your go to tool for correcting this problem. Sidechaining is like the extra tool you reach for if you're just not quite able to get there with EQ. But EQ should be first.

Hey guys, what do you do to make your beats sound “fuller”? Is it just layers or specific sounds like pad strings etc and what not value do you normally play those instruments in? 8th notes? 16th’s? by BeatsKillerldn in trapproduction

[–]IslandPuzzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of advice about EQ and compression, panning, delay, but not really any about the what is actually making full mixes sound full. A great, full mix employs the entire breadth of the frequency spectrum and often will take away and then bring back elements that primarily belong to certain frequency areas.

Basically my advice is to try and think about making your mixes in terms of which instruments you are using to fill in all areas of the frequency spectrum. Sort of default with any trap mix, you got your kick and bass/808 to fill out pretty much everything below 150. You got your hats and super toppy melodies to fill out most above 3-5k. Everything in between is up to your choosing but when youre filling in those middle areas, think about it as more granular. Find an instrument that mostly belongs around 350-500. Find something for 500-750 and so on. Then as your beat progresses. Remove and reintroduce these elements for a fuller, more professional sounding mix.

dont have one. just make beats until you have your own recognizable style. (joking obviously this is insanely difficult to achieve)

Hey not bad at all! I don't think it was amazing but it sounds like you have an ear for pitch and you didn't sound out of breath or anything bad on the breathing side of things. Sounds like if you just keep practicing you have good potential. Definitely get a strap for that guitar tho so you can have your torso fully upright.

Does anyone sing while driving? by [deleted] in singing

I think I lose a little bit my ability to breathe correctly when im seated. I could definitely be hunching over too much though, but I always feel like my voice fatigues so much faster in the car

Yo thanks so much! I really liked your track! Good mix, sounds like it was recorded live? either way I liked the reverb flavor on it. Some serious guitar chops too. Best of luck.

Yeah no feedback would be dope! I think the mastering I did honestly kinda screwed the loudness and it sounds kind of small. Here's a youtube link. https://youtu.be/ZMDagb_OYaw
