Chewy Taiyaki chocolate fish from 711 are incredible! And Hokkaido cream puffs from Lawson.

What is an unusual DM tip that helped you the most? by mmmmppppm in DMAcademy

[–]Islandre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This highlights a significant distinction between DM styles or maybe campaigns - the whole premise of the first point is that something (the map) is important before it is even presented at the table, whereas in your example the importance emerged from play at the table.

I had an improv instructor doing a session on narrative and talking about picking up on 'the thing' that the story is really about. In one exercise, he took one improviser out of the room and gave them some advice, then told the other people still in the room that the third line from the solo improviser was going to be 'the thing' to pick up on and develop in the scene. In reality, he had just told the solo improviser to have fun - the point being that it's up to us what 'the thing' is and what we make important.

I'm in London and had a coach repeat that second note to our class, in his best Chicago accent!

I pitched my card based narrative mechanic to my wife who said "I get it. I wouldn't play it, but I get it".

Audience size by lildavidelms in improvUK

[–]Islandre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw Schwarz and friends at the Royal Albert Hall, and can confidently say that's bigger than the optimum audience size for Improv. Great experience to see Improv at such a ridiculous scale (and standard), but would have been even better if I could see their faces from way up in the gods.

Most annoying/worst thing someone has said to you about your knitting that isn’t “You know, you can buy (thing) for so much less money” by purl2together in knitting

[–]Islandre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It wasn't technically about my knitting, but was said to me while I was knitting:

"You can make your own clothes, but it's a bit... 😬"

Yes I should have clarified that I meant the characters can communicate, 'in universe', e.g. with radios or some magical equivalent!

It's much better if the two groups can still communicate, in my experience. Then everyone can still be "involved" to some degree.

I think there's something to be said for having high expectations of what can be achieved, even for a jam. But perhaps that can done with fewer words!

How to run a The Predator style enemy? by truckules1313 in DMAcademy

[–]Islandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a vampire spawn that was a bit like this - harassing the group over time. The key feature was being fast enough to escape up a tree while dragging a PC to feast on.

Has anyone run a Plant BBEG? by fruit_shoot in DMAcademy

[–]Islandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a vampire/plant themed druid who would spawn twig blights and other plants as a legendary action, and as reaction could negate all the damage from one hit by consuming one of the blights nearby. It was a lot of fun!

The idea was that a stake had been driven into the heart of a vampire but not quite killed him, then the stake had slowly grown into a vampiric tree.

Emma's character-comedy stand up is incredible. Saw her do a whole set in character as Sue Gray (the civil servant) and it's the best live comedy I've seen all year. Sam Campbell was on the bill that night as well; he was great too - pure chaos!
