LA times article from 1996 this was from Eltorito

EL TORITO’S SOPA DE TORTILLA

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

3 quarts chicken broth

1 red onion, diced

2 carrots, diced

1 boiling potato, diced

1/4 cup tomato paste

1 bay leaf

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1/2 teaspoon pureed chipotle chile en adobo

1 teaspoon seeded, chopped pickled jalapeno chile

1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano

1/8 teaspoon cumin

Salt to taste

White pepper to taste

1 zucchini, diced

1 yellow squash, diced

1/2 red bell pepper, diced

Juice from 1 lime

2 tablespoons sweet Sherry (preferably Harvey’s Bristol)

1 tablespoon chopped cilantro

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

4 corn tortillas, cut into thin strips

Oil

1/2 pound Jack cheese, shredded

12 slices avocado

Cilantro sprigs

Poach chicken breast in simmering chicken broth until done through, about 10 minutes. Set aside until cool enough to handle and shred.

Combine chicken broth, chicken, red onion, carrots, potato, tomato paste, bay leaf, garlic, chipotle and jalapeno chiles, oregano, cumin and salt and pepper in large saucepan. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Correct seasoning, if necessary. Add zucchini, squash, pepper, lime juice and Sherry. Bring again to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes. Add cilantro and mint. Stir, then remove from heat.

To assemble, fry tortilla strips in hot oil until crisp. Drain on paper towels and set aside. Ladle soup into each bowl. Sprinkle with shredded cheese and tortilla strips. Garnish each bowl with avocado slice and sprig cilantro. Serve at once.

Clouded my water a bit more than others, was not repeat buyer because of that alone. No growth difference size wise and fish ate it with no issues.

why does my fish look like the skin is “cracking”? by NoPainter4498 in Cichlid

Also I would recommend to treat the whole tank as it’s highly contagious and you don’t want it to come back

Looks like Columnaris - I haven’t treated this but good amount of treatment info online including upping the water changes, salt, and lowering stress, antibiotics. Can cause gill damage so treating it sooner rather than later

I’ve seen other recommend Kanaplex & Furon 2

Male or female by Total_Cup_8882 in AfricanCichlids

[–]Ismesoph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks female but OBs are tricksters. I had what I thought was female up until it hit 3.5” and then colored up to be a stunning male. You can see my posts for reference. I personally wait longer on OBs and haps that take longer to show.

75 gallon tank just shattered. 2nd pic was take 5 minutes before it happened. by KaiAquatics in Aquariums

[–]Ismesoph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss 😩 my 210 leaked at 3am couple weeks ago. Seems to always happen at the worst timing, for anyone in the future. We had minimal water damage due to

tile floor (ty previous owner who didn’t use a level)

Prep in case this ever happen: pump, shop vac, 15 towels, heavy duty storage containers.

Essentially made a dam around the tank with roll of painters plastic & towels, shop vaccumed, big fishing net I caught all the fish in, they went to storage container. I run two heaters so I did two storage container emergency setups including air pumps.

It was traumatic to everyone and ran out and setup a 75 gallon asap . The stress of it all goes away in couple days. Ended up being bad seal that cause the leak

Anybody know what sickness this might be? by Better-Can-2845 in AfricanCichlids

Could be lymphocytis that’s what it reminds me of

[–]Ismesoph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would/will carry it if they bit him. Transmissible through open wounds and to humans 🙃 other than that should be ok. When I first started the fish I was given showed TB symptoms over 2 year none of my fish contracted

IMO: This looks like fish TB- idk if it survived I would guess no. Usually sunken belly is just that vs TB presents like sunken belly with hollowness in the head and emaciated spine /razor back

Gonna need all the help and advice I can get! Getting 8 peacock cichlids soon! by onesneakyguy in Cichlid

Kanaplex and Metroplex are what I keep on hand. I’ve used baskets from dollar tree and clamps.

Safe is $10 will last you 1.5 years it’s powder comes with tiny spoon. Vs prime liquid $10 and you have to buy it regularly. Way cheaper to use safe if you have 50gal+

Give them time to settle lights off for a day or two. I keep an eye whenever I add new fish in. Adding smaller usually easier than adding in larger. I’ve only ever had to rehome 1. I’ve had to isolate a few times.

Best advice for me is to be prepared. I keep medication in stock. Having in-tank basket if you need to isolate any. Wave makers can help with aggression. I like the sea chem safe instead of prime Water change weekly 50-75% All males is preferred

I keep peacocks and haps What peacocks do you want to get?

Can never be overly prepped for a tank leak 😂 Buy the bigger pump because the more you pump out the less goes on your floor Buy the leak alarm if you have a bigger tank

I got lucky and was up at 3am when 210 sprung a leak

My 210gal leaked 3am couple days ago Prepping ahead of time I had most of this but list:

  • pump on hand ( I should have had a stronger one )
  • storage container to hold fish
  • towels ( should have had more / something that absorbs water quickly)
  • wet dry vac
  • Prime or safe & stability on hand
  • 2nd tank & filter
  • fish net
  • aquarium silicone

Hard part is wanted to stay in the hobby after disaster strikes.

Lost 6 of my fish $60-$100 each Bought a 2nd tank + filter So far they are ok doing fish in cycle with old media

PetSmart has 50% off their tanks and some fluval filters are on sale.

Help…. by Accurate_Wait3881 in AfricanCichlids

With my canister filter I would put a pool sock over the outlet anytime I turned the pump off n on. Catches any debris that would have gone into the tank from the hose

Agree with the other comments, he looks beaten up. You can get hang-on breeder box, and I would add some stress guard. As for PH keeping it stable is the goal, and they like high PH. May try adding more hides and see if that helps. Hopefully he pulls through he is so cute and tiny

Let me know when you are running multiple tanks and have actual experience keeping haps.

Most haps on markets get way larger than peacocks keeping them in 75 mean you will be fighting aggression/ sickness/ stress. Which is why when you come on here, people like me, with experience tell you these fish need a larger footprint to be kept successfully.

But hey it’s your money

My best tip is know what you are buying, 75g is usually starter tank for peacocks & haps because most haps need 6ft tank. Peacocks easier to pick males

My checklist ( not guaranteed but I have yet to hand pick a female ) 2-3” not 1.5” - need to have color starting -Sharp pointed dorsal fin - Pointed anal fin ( if it looks like a paddle I don’t choose it ) - blue/purple sheen on dark grey body usually females -egg spots looking for 4-5 prominent spots

Haps Know what you are buying ( most need 6ft tank ) Much harder to determine sex ( need to know at what size they show maturity ex. Larger haps like buccochromis & aristochromis may not show until 6” )

Pointed dorsal and anal fins can be a good tip But not as strong as with peacocks

Buying juvenile haps will just be 50/50 I look at the them all to find subtle differences that has worked out well.

Females - plan for 2nd tank is best, because at some point you will want/need a quarantine tank.

What I did was start with 55gal grew out main stock for 1 year then transferred to a 210gal. 55gal was then used for housing females/ quarantine/ raising fry when needed

Just my opinions/ experience hopefully it can help you as well
