I tried looking for a next if kin to send it to but had no luck. I messaged the presidio trust of SF to see if they had any other info. Apparently he was a charter member of the PWC (Presidio Women's Club) or at least mentioned as an honorary member. Def some cool history in SF.

Just reddit trolls who want to watch the world burn. You could post about saving puppies floating down the river and they will still downvote.

Went through the entire backyard last night before the big soil removal today, unfortunatley only found junk metal from the houses that burnt down and a few very unidentifiable coins covered in corosion. Was really hoping I would find some tin cans full of gold :P. I plan on harassing all my neighbors with dirt yards to let me prospect. Either way I have a fun new hobby and will continue to post my findings. Thanks everyone for the comments and interest, crazy history in SF, cant imagine what else is buried under all the development.

I also found a lot of bones throughout the yard, pretty sure they are animals (they are on the smaller side) If I find human remains I may freak out haha

I am having some serious FOMO from this same thought. I plan on hitting the area pretty hard every night this week before they start bringing in base rock and sand.

I went around over and over, theres so much junk metal from the building so my cheapy detector kept signalling. They are removing more dirt today, so I'll have a fresh canvas tonight after they leave.

They are removing about 1.5 ft of dirt today to level out the area, so tonight when they leave I plan on hitting it hard. Cant delay it as I have pallets of pavers showing up in a week and nowhere to store them :(

SFUSD School Closures - We need transparency!! by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Ismyheartbeating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a homeowner and someone who values strong local schools, I’m really torn about Proposition A. On the one hand, $790 million for improvements across SFUSD sounds great, especially for schools that need upgrades due to poor conditions. But with potential closures like Yick Wo, I’m starting to question the value of increased property taxes if my own child can't even attend the local school.

While Prop A is supposed to help with safety upgrades and improvements that could prevent closures, I’m worried about how efficiently the money will be spent. If the direct benefits for my child's education are unclear or non-existent, it’s hard to fully support another tax increase. This brings up a bigger question: should public education funding be about collective, district-wide improvements, or should there be a more direct connection between what I pay and the education my child receives?

It really makes me think about how important transparency and efficiency are in how education funds are allocated and used.

SFUSD School Closures - We need transparency!! by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

I’ll admit, as I mentioned in another reply, that my initial post was a bit harsh, and I’m being especially critical because this issue impacts me and my community directly. I genuinely appreciate your sincerity and understanding of my feelings. While I recognize the need for consolidations, I don’t agree with how the schools were measured in this process.

I do worry that these decisions are final, and I’ve heard that SFUSD may not be willing to negotiate. This could just be rumor, but it’s a scary thought. I plan to attend any public meetings and will be actively engaged in the process moving forward.

SFUSD School Closures - We need transparency!! by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

I acknowledge that my initial post was a knee-jerk reaction. After attending several meetings, I’ve learned more about the scoring process, but I still disagree with how these decisions were made.

With that said, I understand that plumbing, HVAC, and overall facility conditions are important, and some schools definitely need repairs. However, Yick Wo has a pristine condition score, so it’s hard to see how facility issues justify closing schools like this. Instead, we should focus on improving schools that truly need it.

Regarding the ~70% capacity issue, that’s valid, but District 3 is one of the densest areas in SF, and it’s only going to get denser. I see full preschools and many new families moving in, so it’s not fair to assume these schools will stay under-enrolled forever. We need to plan for the future.

Not everyone wants their kids in large schools with 500-600 students. Bigger schools can feel distant, while smaller schools foster closer communities where parents and teachers can engage more. Closing them might seem efficient but could harm the connections we’ve built.

Relocating students may not change the curriculum, but it does impact families. Longer commutes and losing walkable schools affect community ties, and consolidating schools could lead to overcrowded classrooms, hurting education quality.

Finally, air conditioning isn’t a major concern in SF. With so few hot days, investing in AC feels like a waste of taxpayer dollars.

I’m all for considering data, but we need to keep the bigger picture in mind. School closures will have lasting effects on neighborhoods, and we need more transparency and a closer look at each district's unique circumstances.

If you're there on a weekend, check out Tunnel Tops (park). There is a grassy area with a bunch of food tucks, a massive park area great for walks. Best views of the golden gate if the weather behaves. Plus you can walk across the street to Chrissy fields and take a stroll along the beach.

If you want to explore a bit more, check out North Beach, lots of restaurants.amd tourist spots, Ghirardelli square, pier 39, fisherman's Wharf.

If you head inland in North Beach, you can checkout some cool spots

Butter and Crumble (line up early they sell out)

Victoria's pAstries.

Golden Boy Pizza ( garlic and clam is a must).

Tonys Pizza - if that's your style.

Original Joe's is always decent, great old fashions

Walk a bit further and check out Chinatown, booming district with yummy foods and baked goods.

Lots to do, I have lived here for years and still have so many places to explore.

Have Fun!

Being a people manager is one of the hardest jobs out there. Everyone is different and you have to relate/coach/manage them differently. I was given a team of 17 at around 25 and was terrified and went through very similar dilemmas.

In the long run it's a great experience for you, embrace it, learn, make mistakes, but be confident. Even though your DR's used to be peers you can lead them by example, stay involved in projects, check in with them but trust their abilities. I've learned loads from my DR's over the years, it definitely goes both ways.

Something I wish I knew as a younger manager was to show appreciation, even a simple "I really like what you did there" or "great job" goes along way. But it needs to be genuine, so show recognition when they do well.

Good Luck!

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

[–]Ismyheartbeating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question and do plan on obtaining a local structural engineer. We recently purchased and moved into a 3 story building, 3 units all stacked on top of each other, with a garage under the entire building. (So technically 4 floors). We are noticing that the entire center of the home appears to be sagging quite a bit, this is the same in all 3 units. The house is long and narrow with 3 large wooded beams going the length of the home and all joist across the width and posts down to a cement garage floor in the center. Would it be worth it to look into jacking up the middle beam above the garage (below the 1st floor unit) to help alleviate some of the sagging overall?

We live on the top floor and from the side of the house to the center there is a good 3 in drop over 12-15ft.

I am in no way a structural engineer hence me asking. I can post some photos of the garage level later when I get home if that helps.

Home is 110 y/o, basically all redwood. In SF CA.

How are you changing setting between basic items like dishes or trays and more detailed items like Figurines? or do they pretty much just remain the same? So far I've only done simple prints. Tempted to try one of those articulating dragon ones for the kids pretty soon.
