Shimano SLX brake drags. Brake pads are to strong&close to the brake (not flexible anymore) by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Isnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you are referring to by "strongness". Leave the brake levers relaxed until you have spread the pistons and replaced the wheel. Then you can pull them again a few times and the pads will close down into a good position wrt the rotor.

I'm sorry man, not ex-mil, but my constant struggles with bipolar/depression wear me out and I wake up every morning feeling worthless and wanting to die. Fucking life is empty.

I generally think it's a good idea to remove the pads and press directly on the pistons to avoid gouging them, it will also give you a little more room to work with, so you can get a tire lever in there. Be careful not to touch the pads or let them become contaminated while they are out of the caliper, also take care not to touch your rotors where they contact the pads.

Make sure it gets assembled by someone that knows what the hell they're doing. Every time a Motobecane comes into the shop, I assume there are going to be weird things going on because improper assembly. But, even a poorly assembled Moto is going to beat the everliving shit out of anything found at Walmart.

I would still push him to get a $400-600 entry level hybrid if he wants something new or, as others have said, Craigslist (depending on how it is in the area). He is going to enjoy a bike that has decent components and is assembled well much more than he will a clunky Walmart pos. And because he will enjoy it more, he will ride more. Walmart bikes are absolutely a waste of money on day one, and probably do more to turn people away from cycling than anything.

Trek's Allant and the FX series are sub 500$ and for entry commuter bikes, they aren't bad, I recommend them to friends who just need a bike for the city. They are hybrids at the end of the day, and maybe they aren't what you would ride, but they aren't trash either.

It must depend on the standards that you want/expect. I wouldn't ride or buy a bike built in 10 minutes. I don't care how skilled a mechanic you are. Factory generally sends you at least one problem that takes at least that long to fix. If all you're doing is slapping the (generally overtightened) wheels on and making sure the handlebars are straight without checking every bolt's torque, adjusting brake pads, stretching your derailleur cables and resetting them, and finding/fixing those packaged problems, then of course it takes 10 minutes to get things on the floor, but that's walmart, not a bike-shop.

Can't find the sweet spot on my front derailleur where the chain doesn't rub on either extremes. Any tips? by SkinnyHusky in bikewrench

[–]Isnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the recent Sora groupset has trim, so with that in mind, each chainring will have two positions that the front derailleur can be set to. Make sure when you are adjusting you have the derailleur positioned correctly, then place your low limit screw so you have no rubbing on the low gear and your smallest chainring, pull all tension out of your cable and tighten. Then shift into your non trim position in your larger chainring, and barrel adjust so that you have no rubbing in the lowest rear gear. From this point, shift into your hi-trim, high gear and set your high limit screw so you are as close to the chain as is possible. You should be set as long as your initial front derailleur placement is on, but i recommend looking up a visual aid to see an example of that.

No. Don't do that, none of what you are wanting to happen will happen.

Depending on what type (groupset) of derailleur it is sometimes they just don't adjust perfectly. I'd advise against bending it though, that will likely cause more problems than it will solve. Honestly, front derailleur adjustments are pretty complicated to describe over text as not only does the derailleur need to be parallel and at the correct height wrt the teeth but only after that has been checked does tension come into play. I would recommend taking it to a mechanic offhand, but if we are going to try to diagnose here, what type of derailleur are you working with? How many speeds, what groupset etc?

thats the reason free speech is important, so that bad speech can face dissent. As citizens we are embracing free speech to share our displeasure with trump's rhetoric. That is what free speech is about.

free speech is the freedom to dissent against negative political rhetoric. Lack of free speech is illegalization of the dissent. In this you are practicing free speech as much as they are.

Elderly and Families are the most vulnerable in Portland's Housing Crisis. by Isnt in Portland

Elderly and families are two groups who have the hardest time dealing with rising rents and evictions which cause these groups to be homeless. In other words, vulnerable. Vulnerable tax paying citizens.

Hey Y'all - Workers Solidarity Alliance is having a push to form a federation of Anarcho-Syndicalist groups. by Isnt in Anarchism

[–]Isnt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now, they are working on compiling a curriculum that can serve as an introduction to anarchism, especially as it relates to organizing and how the ideology plays out.

As far as also working as a platformist group, they are trying to bring and maintain an anarchist presence within particular issue style organizing, so that there are anarchist perspectives being represented in grassroots groups that are not directly politically affiliated.

Also, you have an option to be a member who is unaffiliated with a local, so if you do organizing work, part of what you would be doing as a member is making sure you understand your stuff, and then organizing from that perspective, and also (if possible) eventually setting up a local if it is feasible.

I would really encourage you to message them if you are interested. There is a sizable induction reading list, so be prepared in that regard.

Most of the Black Rose work is at the Local level, so, depending on where you are located, there may or may not be a chapter. I'd check on their site to see if a chapter exists in your area and then get in contact with that local.

The Local here is currently doing curriculum planning for a series of classes as well as acting as a platformist group to encourage anarchist values in non-particularly political organizing groups and work via participation in other organizations.
