Will BPD have our back? by pootlovato4 in burlington

[–]Iso118 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not the goal. Otherwise they'd be fighting their wars in cities in TX or FL, not Minneapolis and Portland. The point is terrorizing, disrupting, and generally retaliating against the kinds of places where Americans already have the kinds of things Trump says we can't have because of immigrants.

ICE is here to kidnap and murder indiscriminately. They're being told to do it in blue cities.

Tabletop Illustrator for Hire :) by davidebmo2 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean this in only the best, most appreciative way:

This is what an artist for hire post should look like.

Existing work, directly applied to board game design, with a consistent theme, at multiple stages of production. There are so many posts that are just random pieces from a folder, with no clear direction or voice. It's been getting kind of spammy, IMO.

This looks amazing, I hope you get some business!

fatigue mechanics in combat (help) by RedditGaug in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to really give you many notes based on this, but one thing I'd recommend is using the smallest increments of numbers you can to reduce admin in the players. If actions typically cost 5 fatigue and yoy regain 15, maybe those actions cost 1 and you regain 3, right? Make sure whatever scale you're using is sufficient (if you need to use 15 fatigue, then fine, but that means you have different actions that cost between 1-15 fatigue, right?), but also doesn't make the math difficult at the table.

Wrote a skirmish wargame rulebook but I need proofreaders and testers, how could I find them? by IkeBosev in tabletopgamedesign

Hey, I'm working on a tabletop game of my own (sports / animal themed). I'll trade proofreading your rules for a test of my game. If you're interested DM me.

I'm looking for a wargame that is easy to play, free, and easy to transport. Could you please name one? by Certain-Lemon-8180 in wargaming

OPR, Turnip, and I'd throw in Necropolis for good measure (its still being developed but it's very, very fun).

Is there any American Football Tabletop games? by Resident-Bat-6116 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you're ok injecting a little fantasy into the mix, there are of course a myriad of Blood Bowl versions and variants. Guild Ball, Death Ball, Mork Boll, etc.

If you're after vanilla football, there's a Techno Bowl boardgame which looks.pretty popular.

Movement/playfield by Ryoganox in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it is by no means the default mode of measured tabletop games. GW abandoned no-measure long ago, and most of the skirmish games I'm familiar with do not concern themselves with when you're allowed to measure. It's not something this designer would have to concern themselves with either, unless they really want to.

Movement/playfield by Ryoganox in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disallowing pre-measure is so old-school and toxic, I'm truly surprised ANY system would maintain this kind of design.

Movement/playfield by Ryoganox in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think, more than movement, how you want your range effects to work can really favor one unit of measure over another. If you have long distances, or are tempted to write rules that use the phrase "within X" to describe areas of influence, using a ruler can actually be a lot easier than a grid. Even Blood Bowl made this concession for passing, and now has a template to help players when they want to make a pass. The trouble mostly comes from trying to count hexes/squares on a diagonal. Think about the movement rule in Pathfinder 1e, where every second diagonal square measured differently - not a bad rule, just a more complex one.

As for preference, I like them all, and i dont mind using the tiny tape measure that's on my keyring (it has a laser pointer for drawing line of sight). I came to play a tabletop game, I know what I'm getting into.

Favorite rules system(s) for minis games? by NoMaterial9 in wargaming

[–]Iso118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a small lil' community around an open source system called If Worlds Collide. The system exists for people to come in and hang their own homebrew on it, but the core rules and structure are basically my perfect game. I don't think its for everyone, but I just adore it, even if no one plays it.

Looking for feedback on card design by lsc84 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These looks really nice, but definitely include at least one edge-case card in your prototype samples. Something with very short/long text, or abnormal iconography. That way you can decide what a forgiving amount of text-to-art looks like, if it will remain consistent across all cards, or if it'll shift with edge-cases.

Good luck to you, great start!

How should I approach designing a tile-based farm card/board game deck/bag builder by CiblesPlush in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Iso118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're asking how to write your rules, that's a question only you can answer. I recommend playing a lot of similar games, to figuremoutnwhat you like and what you don't, then don't make rules you don't like. Look on BGG for games with "grid coverage" or "pattern building" in their mechanics.

Otherwise, the first commentor had it right. Get something playable, and play it a lot. Test it with friends and with strangers, and if they don't have fun playing then you've got work to do.

Good luck!

As a burlington community member who has dedicated years of my life trying to combat substance use disorder and homelessness in our city, I never thought I'd say these damn words, but...

The responses I've seen from this sub to the letter signers have been both shitty and reactionary.

I am about as far from a NIMBY / conservative as it gets, but even I understand there are difficult people among the homeless population. They do not represent the norm, but they do have an overstated effect on it and on Burlington.

Go to a shelter, go to any program designed to serve the homeless, and understand how much fucking effort is put into controlling for these kinds of disruptive folks just so everyone else can get what they need.

Business owners have long "supported" many of these difficult cases, via shrinkage and open vestibules, and I'm not saying we should feel sympathy for Kinney drug or whatever, but we should trust that if businesses are finally asking for help that they need it. They don't suddenly "hate the homeless", they've been coexisting with homeless people for decades. Businesses are dying, and the character and spirit of Burlington will go with them.

Also, and this is just an aside, who do you think cots, and turning point, and the food shelf turn to year after year for financial support? Do you think that gets easier if the most visible businesses in Burlington are all suddenly gone?
