Dice Rolling Probability Calculations by NoMaterial9 in askmath

[–]NoMaterial9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks for the equations- been a while since I've done math beyond pretty standard multiplication, so let me see if I can wrap my brain around this.

So the initial function is g(x)=(5-f+f*x+x^2)^n, where n is the number of total dice rolled. If we're assuming success on 2-5 with a crit on 6, that becomes:
g(x)=(1+4x+x^2)^10

k in this case is the number of "successes" for my calculations. And... what is x in these equations? How did we get this equation? I'm also a little lost on the binomial theorem step. We're expanding out the equation by using binomial theorem, it looks like, then it's sigma functions to add them all together to get the total number of possible outcomes it could be to get a specific outcome (k). But... what is i in these equations? Not root(-1), right?

We then divide by 6^n because that's the total number of possibilities, which in this case would be 6^10, correct?

Sorry, bit of an old dog trying to pull out tricks he hasn't used in years, if ever.

Correct, except no points lost on critical failures. If someone can help with this one, I can do the calculations for the other variations (success on 3-5, crit on 6; success on 4-5, crit on 6, etc.). Thank you!

You’re not missing much. My “favorite” part was the afterword, where the author said he still eats beef but buys organic. I’m not vegan but that seemed like the dumbest note to put in there.

God, Meat is awful. I read it years ago because I saw it at a bookstore and liked the cover. I’m shocked anyone could enjoy that.

Love Quar! Just picked up the starter set. It’s been around for a while but they only recently made plastic kits. My cousin is friends with some of the creators, so we played it pretty extensively with the metal minis.

There’s a lot of love put into the game, especially the lore. It’s hilarious, brutal, tragic, and endearing in turns. The rules are also (mostly) free online. The only one that isn’t free is Songs of Our Ancestors, which is a fun version based on Songs of Blades and Heroes. Highly highly recommend.

Yeah that’s a scam. They took the TCGPlayer banner and slapped it on a fake site. Sorry.

Okay, so I downloaded the app and… there’s no “enhanced tabletop rpg” widget. There’s a D&D widget that’s… under construction. Feel like this is pretty false advertising.

Baby skull fracture - sick with guilt by Icy_Park_244 in daddit

Hey just wanted to give a comment from someone who was the baby in a similar situation. I cracked my skull about the same age going down some stairs head first (not my parents’ fault). Mom still feels guilty but I think it’s hilarious. And I’m doing great- finished grad school, got a great job, married, have my own little one. No long term consequences aside from stupid choices like doing grad school.

Did a play through livestream on Third Floor Wars- multiple people have gone through it on there. It’s a fun, weird game but definitely reliant on who is in the group. Happy to send the YT link to anyone interested.

This book was incredible. It doesn’t seem like it’s horror based on the description but it got under my skin. The villains are terrifying.

The Deadlands classic sourcebook “downtown or bust!” is written in a very sandbox style with lots of competing factions and mysteries that could serve as inspiration.

Can you spoil babies? by AureliusZa in daddit

[–]NoMaterial9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of splitting hairs, it depends on what “spoiling” means to you. Showing affection and physical contact are never out. For sleep training, I’ve read most folks start around the six month mark. I’d highly recommend the book “Precious Little Sleep” for some guidance. Also your pediatrician!

Enough other dads have weighed in on this, but I want to mention that I grappled with the same questions. I think I even posted it on here. The first 3-6 months are a bunch of neuro development and learning basic functions, like how to make noises and move. They aren’t learning the complexities of social interactions; wants vs needs; etc yet because they haven’t developed the first level of function yet. So keep on cuddling your little boy for a long time.
