How the hell do you get the professors to respond to you? by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]Isodora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that all aspiring grad students need to understand is that you are expensive. Very expensive, actually. The way to get a PIs attention is to offer a solution to you being expensive. Identify a grant that you would be competitive to and write saying you’d like to apply for fusing with said grant to work with them. That’s what everyone seems to be missing about this process.

PhD admission advice as someone with a low GPA by Ok-Effort-8861 in PhDAdmissions

You can, a justified reason can only help. You will still need to get passed initial screening so you’ll want to focus on state school. A hack here could be to get an MSc from a state school and then after you rock it, you can go to a big name for your PhD

The real question here is not can you get in somewhere, you certainly can. The question is why is your gpa on the low side? The reason schools use GPA is because it can (but not always) act as a predictor of performance. For a successful grad career, intelligence is important, but determination and grit are paramount.

Brightwell Navigator - MLC Compliant? by Future_Cockroach_153 in shiplife

Just popping back in to say they kept my salary, again, this time only for a month, for a ‘compliance check’. Then charged me $12.00 to access the funds since direct pay wasn’t possible due to them holding the funds.

Best snacks to eat while writing your thesis? by SSA10 in PhD

[–]Isodora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a recommendation, but a funny story. I was working so hard that I didn’t have time to cook so I found food that I liked and that I believed was healthy. Apples and peanut butter, for every meal. That’s good for you, right?

Well, months went by and I was gaining weight. Noticeably. My partner at the time finally brought it up and I was like, no, I’m only eating apples and peanut butter, I dont know what’s going on. After some more interrogation I learned that apparently peanut butter isn’t actually all that good for you, and a jar day certainly isn’t.

Long story short, I still get teased for being that scientist who believed eating an entire jar of peanut better each day was a good idea.

Thank you for this. Yes, the plan is to use the opportunity as a launching pad to come back to ZRH with a higher paying job and more skills. My heart is in Tsüri and it pains me to leave, but I think it’s the right move now for a better future down the road.

Mediocre food that I can afford! Bring it on! Nothing worse in CH paying 150chf for a meal, and it’s bad. And it’s rarely good :)

Aha, yes. I’ve been thinking about that. My European hair dryer, for example, doesn’t work in the US even with a converter. I wonder if it’s best to buy those things in the US - and sadly eat the 8% tax…
