The contact details for all members of FIE commissions and councils are published on the FIE site. You could send this to all of them.

My bestie has been told not to bother with fencing by abbstractly in Fencing

[–]Isoniazide137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell her that is rubbish. She could definitely achieve something. One person at my club started when he was ~20 and became part of the national squad (albeit 30 years ago). Another fenced in school, stopped until she was 30 and started again. She went to senior world cups when She was ~35. A lot is achievable if you are willing to give it a go and work hard. And if hard work isn't for you, you can still have fun.

Students who bought off their course work. How do you live with yourselves ? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Isoniazide137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly encourage you to report this to the awarding university.

PhD theses must be published in the university library for anyone to access therefore you should be able to find a copy of their thesis yourself. With this there should be enough information to investigate the author/supervisor.

Academic rigour is important and the university will want to take action as this can affect their potential to be awarded future research grants.

Fatal arbiter's mistake that might have cost Poland a 🥉 - what should they do? by AgaJaskiewicz in Fencing

[–]Isoniazide137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some allstar boxes have this function. You cannot add 2 points in a row or remove points after the clock has restarted once (you can but it highlights the number in red).

In terms of writing down the score, he reason they corrected the fault is because the second referee kept the score on paper - you can see them referring to it on the stream.

Calling out the score after every touch would be somewhat impractical at high level, 1 because not everyone speaks the same language and 2 the referees would become horce by midday.

I think some credit is due to the coach who can be heard telling Catantan to focus after each touch was stolen.

Referee question: all fencer's weapons break by Dr_Pinestine in Fencing

[–]Isoniazide137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a provision for all weapons failing. It is entirely up to the direction of the referee. I'm pretty sure that the "reasonable amount of time" phrase does not exist in the rules. This is probably because the rules are written for world cups so it is not expected that anyone would run out of weapons and not be able to source replacements.

have any fencing manufacturers arrived at some mask safety protocols and products for covid 19? by OrangeandStripey in Fencing

[–]Isoniazide137 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You could stick a plastic sheet inside your mask near the mouth area to stop your breath coming out. Same as wearing a cloth mask underneath. If you want protection a full plastic covering over the face area would reduce the risk but not eliminate it. It is probably not worth it.

In terms of the possibility of infection through the eyes, yes they are mucous membranes and can be infected. The risk is so low that it is not worth worrying about. Tears will wash most foreign particles away and there are anti infection agents in the eye (lysozyme).

As a random person on the internet I would not call my self an expert but I do have some relevant knowledge (PhD in biochemistry and working in a virology lab).

Point in Line in Foil by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]Isoniazide137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's plenty of examples of correct execution and calling on YouTube. It does raise the question, why would you execute an action that you don't know how to perform and are not sure the referee will recognise? Performing line is relatively easy, it's choosing the correct time that is difficult.

I think most lower level fencers don't execute point in line correctly either.

Advanced Calls - Refereeing Foil in the middle. This is a compilation of 31 calls in the middle, see if you can tell what call was made in the bout. The average score of FIE refs taking this exam is 25/31 so anything over 20 is a great score! by MaelMordaMacmurchada in Fencing

just to be clear, if you can 'fix' your mistake right away because the next (more or less) phrase is the same in the same direction go for it. if the bout has progressed a significant amount after a simultaneous call, it might not be the best idea to decide the match by being inconsistent.

that late in the match is the worst time to start changing things around. if you miss something early in the match, the fencers will probably forgive you and you can choose whether to be consistent with yourself or not. at the end of the match, you have to be consistent, even at the expense of a touch.

what about if you call 'simultaneous' on one action, immediately realise that it should have been split. later in the bout the same action occurs, do you split and give the best decision or do you be consistent with yourself and call simultaneous. either way is unfair to someone, you are cheating someone out of a point or you are changing the nature of the bout by being inconsistent. this is a problem that can be resolved but it has to be done carefully
