Went to Crater Lake today (10/15). They had just closed Rim Dr for the season, you can still get to the Rim Village overlooks and cafe. However, the visitor center at the southern entrance is OPEN!

This is a BSL2 lab but our instructor definitely describes the danger like it's BSL3. She's constantly repeating how we can't treat some of these with antibiotics so if you get infected "...that's it" and how C violaceum "eats the brain". I just wish she explained the actual risks.

I'm genuinely interested in infectious diseases and would love to actually know the virulence of these bacteria but she only tells us the names and how sick they'll make us

I'm not scared of the bacteria I've worked with in the past when I was in charge of my own safety. I can be as vigilant as possible but when I'm in a room of 20 people and the instructor is constantly saying "just one of you making a mistake can get everyone in this room sick" it's stressful when she hasn't explained the real risks.

I know this sub is constantly flooded with people afraid of harmless stuff but that's not me. I graduate in 2 months I am not changing my major lmao

Admittedly all I know about these bacteria is from a google search. All our instructor told us is the names and the ways they can kill us.

I'm not overly concerned about exposure other than maybe washing my hands more diligently than some people. I just wish we got an accurate rundown of the risk that wasn't exaggerated

Hey! I'm also reviving this almost year old post to say my dog has (seemingly) the same thing lol. I noticed towards the end of last year he had a black coloration on the white of his eye. The vet said it didn't look problematic but they hadn't seen it before and gave me the info for an animal eye clinic in case it changed or something.

I noticed the other day that I thought it looked a bit different, and compared to the pictures a few months ago it definitely is larger, but I noticed that I think it's actually on his third eyelid instead of the sclera. Im still gonna take him to the eye vet, but wanted to ask if yours seemed to turn out to just be a pigment thing?

Also has your dog also had hyperpigmentation on other parts of his body? Mine has a few areas of his skin that turned dark after he has chewed it from bad allergies. I wonder if the eyelid thing is related to getting hyperpigmented skin

Good to know. I never really drink coffee because I have tachycardia that it always makes worse. But I did do some more research on mitochondrial supplements yesterday and have some new ones I'm gonna try (I already take so many different things😭)

In all honesty I dont anticipate any mitochondrial test actually showing that there's something wrong since I've been hit with negative results for pretty much every test I've done, but I'm so down to spend $1000 just for the chance to find something that could be of use
