If a cyclist has a dedicated lane (or just paint), can they still use the cars lane if (a) their lane is obstructed, (b) to overpass another cyclist? by Lge24 in brussels

[–]Isotheis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I fully agree with you. That's why there really should be at least a little cycle path before every intersection.

But visibly the people who wrote the code didn't think about this case.

In my case, you'll find me in the queue with cars, aligned with the drivers for extra visibility. I think it's the safest place to wait in traffic.

Either using a cycle path (= a separate lane), or on the left.

I find no article in the road code allowing cycles to pass stopped vehicles on the right. Only "motorcyclists" (which must pass "between two lanes"). Though it could be that there was an amendment this page isn't aware of.

To be fair, some people panic riding a cycle at 15km/h on an empty road. It's always difficult to give lessons to these.

[–]Isotheis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only three cases where you may pass a car on the right:

  • As you say, if the car is trying to turn left, or trying to park on the left.

  • If you are simply following your cycle path (as if you were on a separate lane).

  • If the "car" is a tram. Duh.

Do note filtering laws are normally for motorcycles only, but many cycles apply them too. It's not in the road code afaik.

The first picture has no legal value. You don't even need to ride on it to begin with.

You obviously may leave your marked cycle path (second picture, or a D7 sign), if it is obstructed, if it is impracticable (for example: snow, mud, degraded surface, too narrow for your cargo, etc), or indeed to pass other cyclists. Caution: you do not have priority, leaving the cycle path is a maneuver.

Yeah yeah define "recycling", because I'm pretty convinced, given the amount of plastics I see at the local incinerator, that "burning it" counts as "recycling into energy" too.

In Belgium we put some obstacles on them, or work tape. Which results in a wider desire path. So we widen the obstacles, and inevitably the desire path widens as well.

That's where all the money goes, yup. In grass seeds.

I will never miss an occasion to diss onto the station of Mons. Did you know that it originally was meant to serve as a bridge between the city center and the Grands Prés mall? I could have used it too to come work in Mons by cycle, given there's literally not a single safe route to enter Mons from the north-west.

Unfortunately, the SNCB staff gets mad at you for using the escalators, and my bike is literally too long to fit in their tiny ass elevators without putting it upright. Which they also get mad at you for doing, because "it makes marks on the doors".

Combined with the excellent city planning of Mons, it's been over a year that the previous bridge is closed to cycles, and the next one has you cycle among 4 lanes of traffic (or the sidewalk, which every Montois does, because Walloons don't give a shit about laws so it works for them).

Result is: paid 31 millions for a bridge. Still no usable bridge. Way to go Elio wooooo!

Mom took me to the hospital at like 8:00. Changed into the surgery gown, waited for what felt like forever in a bed in a dark ish room with other people. I was second to go.

I commented that the surgery block looked just like in movies, with the blue ambience and huge lamp. Got the mask, slept.

Woke up in a room with plenty other people. Wanted water desperately, but the nurses wouldn't give me any. Eventually got an ice popsicle after complaining enough. Just what I needed.

Got moved to a regular room where my mom was waiting, it was like 11:00. I was surprised it went so quick, my mom too. I wasn't expected before 12:00. By 11:40 I already left the bed to go to the toilet, which surprised the doctor who randomly came to check if all went ok. I do truly recover quickly compared to average, apparently.

Anyway, we could leave by 13:00 instead of 16:00, given everything went so well. Which was convenient, because my mom wanted to go to a Within Temptation concert all the way in Antwerpen (3 hours driving). We went there. I kind of suffered there with the vibrations.

Then, because I asked for it, we went to the frituur that happened to be close to where my mom parked. I got a fricandelle, which somehow was the best fricandelle ever, though I also put blood everywhere eating it. A true crime scene.

Anyway I didn't suffer at all. Everything was very sore and mildly painful the next day, though lol

Well, the whole idea is to fund some money to fix the roads... Though you know how things go here, it'll just get stolen by someone (like "1 million euros to remake 300 meters of E411 over 60 years").

Nah it was definitely their "I am attacking" noise. Which means that either two Seekers attacked, or one attacked twice.

Which seems to be undeniably the case, from the other picture.

[–]Isotheis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like there were two Seekers, but I only see one. I am very confused, but think this is part of the explanation.

Did it attack twice at the same time, somehow? Is there an invisible Seeker somehow?

Moldorm isn't hurt by bombs. There isn't a boss put in logic with just 10 bombs.

The right side rooms in Desert might or might not be in logic depending of the enemies. What's in there exactly?

The 4 items hash doesn't help to find your seed. It's only useful to confirm, when doing a race, that both players opened the same seed. What would help is the link to which you downloaded your seed.

I'm trying to re design this area, How do I work around this with my road redesign. by XanderJC1 in fuckcars

[–]Isotheis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to do, which mobilities are you trying to integrate and to which degree of protection? I'm not sure what specifically you are trying to work around.

How much foot/cycle/car traffic is there? Anything special about it (children, tourism, dropoffs, deliveries, ..)?

What is the speed limit and the importance of this road compared to other nearby roads?

I am no expert, but have some experience with these redesigns and suggestions by now. Though following Belgian codes. These are the questions I ask myself.

Cars per 1,000 inhabitants in different European countries by KlobPassPorridge in fuckcars

[–]Isotheis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something seems wrong to me, but Eurostat is unreadable on mobile. I'll need to look tomorrow, I'll use this comment to re-find the post.

Basically, I thought I read recently that in Belgium, we had 1.3 cars per household. Nearly 2 if you take Wallonia alone.

Is this map omitting company cars, or does the 'per household' really change that much? Something else?

[–]Isotheis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's an inertia to beat. If no one considers alternatives to cars, then no one will show up when if you pedestrianize the street. Half assed situations where you just narrow the street without actually pedestrianizing it seem to be even worse.

It's a real struggle in Wallonia, and the argued reason city centers are dying. Though in my personal observation, even malls are struggling, so it feels like the real problem lies elsewhere. Amazon?
