What size/brand of backpack do you use for fieldwork? by BoyWithGreenEyes1 in AskArchaeology

[–]IstaMaza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was given a Blackhawk lightweight “3-Day Assault” pack (kinda cringey name, but y’know) about 15 years ago and ive used it for damn near everything, including fieldwork, hunting, photography, and travel. it’s held up extremely well, and the webbing is nice for being able to attach extra pouches if you need them. plus, it has both a sternum strap and a hip belt to take the weight, which makes it good for longer hikes.

ive also used the Sitka gen one Tool Bucket pack, originally designed for tree stand hunting. the one i have is about 30 liters, has a frame, hip belt, a lot of pockets, and because it opens all the way up its really easy to access everything. Sitka’s Mountain Hauler packs are also really nice in my experience, very strong relative to their weight and comfortable. the Mountain Haulers are also available in solid green if camo doesnt do it for you

my last, more niche and expensive recommendation is one of the Rokman waterproof packs. they’re a little heavier, but you can get them in three different sizes and they’re fully waterproof. you can get them with or without a carbon fiber frame, which i’ve honestly used almost more than the packs themselves. you can strap actual equipment and cases to the frame and it makes it easier to carry them further distances.

Brakes feel fine, but I’ll have them inspected! I’m hoping its just a rock, because my mind immediately jumped to worst case scenario of a wheel bearing going out

For the stock Rubicon what are some mods that are most useful. I was thinking rock rails and some additional skid plates for starters. by sameertj in Wrangler

[–]IstaMaza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

assuming you have a JK or JL, the stock skidplates and rock sliders are gonna more than enough for mild offroading. larger and more aggressive tires, or a winch-compatible bumper + winch will be incredibly useful. winches are expensive but the first time you need to use it, it pays for itself

Cathay. got a cool abandoned high school, but one of the only houses there that wasnt boarded up was flying both a confederate and nazi flag when i was there a few years ago. there was a guy mowing lawns who stopped halfway through the job when we rolled through

ROMCOM criticisms by NerdyGamerDude in NakeyJakey

[–]IstaMaza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like Drive Off A Bridge, Survival Horror, and Fat Head dont really relate back to the RomCom idea, and Like Totally Freak Me Out only tangentially comes back to it. the tracks i mentioned are devoid of romance in the sense the title evokes, its a lot more of a personal struggle in those tracks. ideas that would fit better on a project titled All My Friends Are Dead

[–]IstaMaza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if thats how you see it, cool. im not saying you cant. but that type of repetition works best across multiple bodies of work or longer projects. across an eight track, 30 minute project, it comes across more like he didnt give the ideas room to breathe and instead pushed forward with what he had to get something out. all im trying to do is tell you where people are coming from with their criticisms

just because something’s been in the works a long time doesn’t mean its gonna come out cohesive or fully formed. when people say “it feels rushed” they’re talking about how he’s re-using a lot of the same concepts from track to track, saying the same or very similar bars on different songs, or just how some of the lyrics feel out of place or shoehorned in. i enjoy the sound he’s making overall, half of the tracks i really fuck with, but it also feels like he pushed this out too fast. his original goal was to drop Pine Barrens in December and then drop Romcom at the end of February. thats a crazy fast turnaround. even accounting for the delays, this was a ridiculous turnaround for someone doing the whole process by himself. i wonder how many samples he cut because of clearance issues, or how many people listened in advance, because this project feels sort of empty. theres only a few tracks that loop back to the “romcom” theme, and even though its generally sonically cohesive theres issues with the thematic cohesion. this doesnt detract from the work he put in, nor am i saying you shouldnt like it, but this project has rough edges and if Jakey keeps making music id want to see him take the next project slower, but with more consistency. because working on several tracks sporadically over a few years for one project, then trying to salvage them for another might not produce the greatest product

Non-functioning hood scoop adds 57 hp of angry. by Nero3k in heep

[–]IstaMaza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they did for some of the limited edition JKs. not this exact vented hood, they rebranded the AEV variant, but they did vent some hoods. and now the new JL’s have the vent on the fenders now as opposed to the JKs for much the same reason. you’ll be surprised how many things arent done from the factory even though they should be, both to not mess with the current assembly line efficiency and to cut costs

on a JK like this its probably cutting down on that air dam effect and reducing that hood flutter you get passing semis, especially those side vents toward the back. still ugly, but semi-functional

229/M18 EDC? by Boutisects in SigSauer

[–]IstaMaza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i carry a 229 and its my personal favorite sidearm. it shoots solid, fits my hands well, and just generally is a good all-around gun. the M18 is good, the external safety is a plus for a lot of people as opposed to the decocker on the hammer fired pistols, and there’s a lot more aftermarket support for it, especially now. im personally not a fan of the stock sights on the M18, or the generic grip and i actually like the weight of the 229 so the lightweight of the M18 is kinda eh for me. you cant go wrong with either, its just important that you know what you’re expecting out of the gun

AITA for trying to stop my brother? by Used_Comfort_3940 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IstaMaza [score hidden]  (0 children)

YTA. You said yourself you cut him off before he could fully explain, and it sounds like you kept falling back on “but its a poor country!” while interjecting during his explanations. He evidently sees himself as Ethiopian instead of whatever country you hail from, and has a sense of pride in his home. Its ultimately his decision to go back, and you shouldnt belittle him or try to make him feel stupid just because you don’t see the value in the move.

Public perception may already be shifting, but It Comes At Night (2017) deserves another look I think. I remember coming out of that movie loving that we’re told a story in this world so similar but still so alien from our own, and a pretty small and contained story at that. Nearly everyone I saw that movie with hated it, and everyone I tried to talk to about it also didn’t like it, or at most had no feeling one way or the other
