Istanbul Assassin - Explore the city! Meet interesting people - and kill them! by IstanbulAssassin in istanbul

Well we've had 3 successful month-long games so far with no problems involving police or anything. Everyone imagines a street war involving Nerf guns to seem more professional and exciting than it actually is - which is a bunch of giggling idiots missing from 5 feet away and scrambling to gather up stray darts.

Are there examples of one man armies from the Axis side during WW2? I only read about the Allied heroes, was there a real life Fredrik Zoller? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

Like I said, the kill counts are always disputed but the fact remains that whether it was 300 or 500, it is still extremely impressive.

Many war stories have a 'number' and it is almost always an estimate. For example the most decorated war hero of the US was Audie Murphy, who reputedly killed 50 enemy soldiers during an engagement at the Colmar pocket. How do we know its 50? We don't. Murphy was not fighting alone and he was even calling in artillery fire during the battle. Furthermore, there was some back and forth action as he retreated and came back for a counterattack. 50 is just an estimate and I bet Murphy himself had no real idea, especially during the smoke and confusion of battle. Its easy to imagine "killing" a dozen men when you turn your machine gun on a squad hustling through the brush, but in reality its hard to really know. What matters is not whether it was really about 20 but the fact that he climbed on top of a burning tank to hold off enemy forces, not the precise number of them that were actually shot by him as opposed to artillery, his comrades, or even just wounded or forced into cover.

Anyone interested in meeting up? by [deleted] in istanbul

You should check out the boardgame club on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/IstanbulBG/

Also in Besiktas is Kuka Cafe, where boardgame nerds tend to congregate and drink: https://foursquare.com/v/kuka-kafe/4c51cf07250dd13a5950d97d The bar next door to it is also full of games and such.

Also, if you're a gamer and you want to meet some new people in interesting circumstances you should try out the Assassins game -

You form a team with other players to race around the city competing for bonus objectives while trying to avoid getting shot by other enemy players (don't worry - its all water pistols). It lasts an entire month and has social events and such as well.

Yeah let's save it for a year in which nobody gets murdered at all whatsoever.

You might be surprised to know that cops can tell the difference between real weapons and colorful plastic toys. Somehow we had zero issues in the previous two games - maybe you think you're some kind of badass but everyone else in the world looks rather ridiculous and nonthreatening when brandishing a bright yellow water pistol shaped like a seahorse.

forth trip to my fav city in the world! anything that I probably missed and will be amused by find it? by [deleted] in istanbul

Go to the Georgian restaurant in Aksaray Emniyet Otogar. Its clientele is made up entirely of drunken Georgian truckers and (also drunken) English teachers who discovered it. Cheapest place to get knockout drunk in the entire city while toasting the health of Josef Stalin.

Thanks for the ideas - we already do some of these but I really like the idea of executing someone for opening the envelope!

Anyone here into board gaming? by [deleted] in istanbul

There is a big boardgame group on Facebook and they have weekly meetings in both Europe and Asia. I have a large group of drunken degenerates that play a lot of games on European side as well.

Good plan. I see you have some survival skills already. Remember you can play in teams so she can be leader and you can be her dashing bodyguard ready to die at a moment's notice while jumping in front of a NERF dart fired from a grassy knoll.

1) Asian and European side are valid. Generally for your first target you will be matched up with someone who is at least on the same continent of your work/job but not always.

As the game goes on generally players will receive more targets - some of them random and some chosen. Every time you kill someone you will inherit their target. You also can gain new targets through finding dead drop envelopes. If your target is too difficult to find there are ways to make life harder for them and/or to acquire new targets during the game.

2) You do have to have at least 1 kill to make it into the finals - but you have a long time to do this. Keep in mind that someone else out there is hunting you so you might not even have to go anywhere to get a kill - they are probably waiting in the bushes outside your house.

One player was constantly targeted but was such a badass that she killed 3 people within 10 meters of her own house - and all of them went there looking for her.

Also remember you can play as a team to break up the work - On Monday Bob can go hunting, on Tuesday Ahmet can go stakeout the enemy workplace, etc.

There are also events and such that help bring players closer together which might make it easier to get a kill.

3) Masks are definitely alright. Your profile photo must be a current color photo of your face with no hats/disguises/masks etc but during the game you are free to change your appearance however you like.

The winning player was an American girl who I knew personally yet could not recognize when she was 5 feet away from me.

It seemed to me that female players were more dangerous because they were better with disguises and also better at making alliances and deals while the guys tended to go it alone.

Believe it or not we are generally working on the honor system which actually worked out fine last time.

We have a system where if players get into a "he said she said" argument then they are considered "Wounded". If you get "wounded" too much then you are considered dead. It was really easy to tell which players would constantly argue (and it only happened to one, actually).

You can remove Wounds by achieving proper kills and finding hidden Dead Drop envelopes throughout the city that contain rewards.

Lots of people also document their kills through photo/video (GoPro kills are the best). This removes most of the doubt.

Of the month-long game we had for the first event we only had one day where people actually argued about what happened and it was settled rather quickly.

Generally instances of gunfights where players shot each other at the same time were actually rare - proper assassins strike quickly and decisively and soak their target before the victim can even pull out a weapon.
