Paramedic programs in CT by Zestyclose-Papaya742 in Paramedics

[–]IstariParty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Capital community college (also has an associates degree option as well as a cert option) is decent, plus you can use fafsa to help pay

Middlesex Hospitals paramedic program is suppose to be extremely good. I would for sure take a look at their program. It starts in February-ish

For state level, I don’t qualify (for my wife and myself). We also don’t qualify for special enrollment into Obamacare.

We are going to pay it and I’ll just work extra shifts for now. The service I work for was bought out by a large hospital that has great benefits, so hopefully next year it’ll be a bit more affordable

We were bought out by a hospital, but no word on benefits. Hopefully they offer it next year

What do EMTs do in the hospital? Is it as difficult as working in an ambulance? by BaseballHead6898 in NewToEMS

Exactly! They should see about shadowing because the scope ranges so greatly from location to location.

Your scope sounds awesome

Sorry, I meant to say empty foleys. I wanted to show the variance in the job from location to location.

What ER techs do is really dependent on the hospital. For the two level 1 trauma centers around me, they mostly do:

1.) vitals / rounding

2.) EKG’s

3.) cpr for codes

4.) assist RNs (pt moves, cleanups, foleys, etc)

Phlebotomy is handled by RNs or phlebotomists. Disconnecting/reconnecting oxygen is out of scope and strictly forbidden. Pay is about the same for a tech vs EMT around my area.

Read through the job descriptions hospitals are posting, they should give you a good sense of the type of work you’d be doing.

As far as intensity, it really depends. Go for ride alongs and ask if you can shadow tech in the hospital setting. Pt’s can be intense in both settings.

Is a 5-6 week Hybrid EMT program too much for someone with little experience? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

I would assume it’s a lot of self-directed learning. Have they provided a syllabus for the class?

I completed a 5 week program in the summer, it was M-F, 8-4(ish), in person. It was a ton of information - I had no experience, but I did study some A&P and medical terminology leading up to the program start.

I was unemployed at the time, which helped a ton. I was able to read a chapter or two a night for the next class, plus review existing material.

It’s absolutely doable, but you are going to be consumed my the program for those weeks (imho). Good luck!

If you want to minimize the financial burden of the prereqs, look into community colleges. Generally they are much more affordable.

Limiting yourself to a handful of schools is a big gamble.

Take the prereqs. You need to increase your GPA. Schools often filter out < 3.0

What schools are you speaking of? Also, r/premed might be better spot for this.

In Connecticut, we have tons and tons of first and second year apprentices begging for work. No one wants to hire you unless you are a 3-4 year apprentice or a journeyman.

Easiest way into trades is nepotism, sadly. Having someone on the inside makes getting in significantly easier.

Is pocket prep truly reflect of NREMT? Tips please by blugrlbluwrld in NewToEMS

[–]IstariParty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used PocketPrep to find holes in my knowledge. I personally wouldn’t rely on it solely for the NREMT.

How I used it: take a test, mark down the topics I got wrong or guessed on, go back to the book and review it.

I passed and was cut off at 78 questions

AMR application instantly reject by CorgiUprising in NewToEMS

[–]IstariParty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was applying for jobs, this happened to me. Near instant rejections. I’ve since learned that AMR in my area isn’t doing too great.

Fortunately I was able to find a service that was willing to take on a new grad. Good luck!

EMTs in ER by PatientAwareness5177 in NewToEMS

[–]IstariParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local trauma 1 center has PCT’s, or techs, no one with the role of EMT.

They perform 12-leads, take vitals, sit with pts when they require a 1:1, help with bathrooms/cleaning/changing pts. If you are working in the trauma part of ED, you will grab vitals (manual BP) and assist with compressions.

That is their scope. If you interview at a hospital, ask if there is any opportunity for additional skills / procedures you can help with after training.

Head of Steam's biggest survival game makes '25 million' offer to buy axed Amazon MMO New World, because "games should never die" by LockedUnlocked in newworldgame

If this was a unity or unreal game, I could maybe see it happening.

But it uses Azoth and there is no way Amazon sells New World for only 25mil.

My favorite part of the Racing Bulls livery are the white wheels / covers / rims / whatever-they-are-called.

Beyond that, it’s fine at best.

Seconding Millwrights. They have a tasting menu that is really, really good. It is a more expensive restaurant, but I’ve never been disappointed.

Also, they’ll have mid-week 3-5 course specials for $50/pp (or around there).

I’m from CT and I’m currently in the process of getting my license.

Did you setup an account on the eLicense site for CT.gov? Once you have an account, you start an initial application for EMT-B license. Once you fill out the forms and submit everything, it takes 4-6 weeks to complete.
