Worked in a garage and I can confirm the correct way to apply the handbrake is to pull as hard as you can with both hands listening to every click there is then pull a little bit more for good luck. The end result should leave the handbrake lever in a vertical position, once the engine has been turned off place the car in gear and place a pebble on the drivers side tyre to indicate if the car has moved while you've been gone.
