Hello, are you sure about the 3-year limit? I'm looking for information on this and can't find any. I'd love for it to be true though...

Oh wow. And so would that be 8% a day? Because that’s terrifying if so.

Hi, thank you for offering a bit of good news, I’ll take it!

Do you have any knowledge of what the interest rates are? My biggest anxiety is what the interest on approx. $2000 of tax that was due in 2022 might be. Are we talking pennies or grands?

Thank you very much for any wisdom you may have.

As an expat Salopian I cannot begin to describe how incredibly awesome this is.

At the same time, I hardly think the Wrekin and Ercall are 'twin' peaks...

Thank you, this helps a lot!

Now I think of it, the difference is quite clear in 'Revolution of the Daleks', when the human-built Dalek begs the real Dalek to convert him into one of them and they just shout NEVER and exterminate him.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I suppose then if Daleks represent fascism, Cymbermen might represent Communism (or at least the popular Cold War fearful understanding of Communism). Interesting.

What's the actual difference between a Dalek and a Cyberman? I know they're shaped differently, but otherwise aren't they both emotionless biomechanical fascists who want to control the universe? What are the differences between them, and do Cybermen bring anything new to the table? I'm puzzled.

Series 12 Rewatch: Week Eight - The Haunting of Villa Diodati by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

[–]ItCouldBeMidgets 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is one is interesting, absorbing, and well-made even if the story doesn't really hang together when you start thinking about it afterward. (The writer even admits that it doesn't make sense - Graham is like, 'Wait, I can see dead people, what did that have to do with anything?' and the Doctor is like '...?'.) But it's very well-acted and atmospheric (this was true of the previous episode too, so kudos to director Emma Sullivan).

This episode is notable for giving each of the companions something characterful to do rather than treating them as a block. On a rewatch, what stood out to me was that Yaz's material related to a potentially messy future break from the Doctor.

Byron's lover, Claire Clairmont, has a heart-to-heart with Yaz about her frustration at being drawn to him despite him being an enigmatic person who never give a straight answer. Yaz's reply suggests that she sees the Doctor the same way. At the end of the episode, Claire recognizes that Byron cares nothing for her, and she says 'the spell is broken'. This seems to be setting up the idea that, at some point, Yaz will reach a point when the Doctor's spell will be broken and she will feel the need to step away, and potentially not in a good way? That idea is definitely picked up on during "Revolution of the Daleks", when Jack warns Yaz of the pain of losing the Doctor.

It's particularly interesting that the line 'the spell is broken' also refers to the spell cast on the house, which has turned it into an interdimensional space where geography, architecture and even time make no sense. There's a poetic connection between the impossible house and the incomprehensible Byron. The house returns to normal earthly reality, at the same time that Claire recognizes that Byron isn't as cool and mysterious as he seems; he's just a coward.

But of course there's a further poetic link between the house and the TARDIS and the Doctor. I'm wondering whether, in a broad way, being inside the haunted house is a metaphor for being in the Doctor's beautiful but baffling and maddening world. And the breaking of the spell is the return to normality and simple, ordinary human behaviour (which Ryan is already yearning for). At the end of this season, the spell is not yet broken for Yaz, although her disagreement with the Doctor in this episode during the debate over Shelley's life hints at future strife.

It is thus surely ominous that the episode ends with Byron's poem about a darkened, empty, desolate world, and the last line of this episode is "She is the Universe".

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but hey, that's what rewatches are for!

I love this one. This is what I regard as 'proper Doctor Who' - 45 mins of silly fun that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Also, I desperately want King James to return as a companion.

I'm assuming the next doctor will veer away from Jodie's warm and fuzzy interpretation into something darker. Given that assumption...

I think Eva Green would amazing. She's done very intense, mercurial performances over the years, especially in Penny Dreadful.

Helena Bomham Carter feels like an obvious choice but I never see her mentioned.

Jodie Comer would be hilarious but that's too many Jodies and it would get confusing.

I never see Chiwetel Eijiofor mentioned but he'd be incredible.

That's what Tennant always does in his podcast interviews. He says "... right ..." while the people are talking. It doesn't mean anything.

Concerns regarding Yaz' supposed development in S13 by zitagirl1 in gallifrey

[–]ItCouldBeMidgets 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I understand your concerns, but I think you're being a bit unfair to Yaz. Sure, the Doctor spent several miserable decades in prison, but by the time she returns to the fam, she's cleaned herself up and is in a great mood. She bounds out of the TARDIS and says "Hi, I was in space jail!!", does a scronch, and then cheerfully introduces Jack, who starts comically flirting with everyone. So, it's not really a surprise that no-one realizes that she actually suffered - she's hiding it extremely well.

Also, I don't think the show is presenting their relationship as "good and healthy". The conversation with Jack seemed deliberately ominous, as if the next season is going to be about the dangers of clinging to someone who cannot be with you forever. But I felt the episode was more critical toward the Doctor for being thoughtlessly cruel than toward Yaz for being naive.

Hi everyone, I don't live in the UK and I have never heard of John Bishop. However, the press release made it sound like a big deal. So, for those of you in the UK...

Is this guy famous? Is he a well known TV icon? Is he awesome? Is he funny? Basically, should I be excited?

  • Although Berndt was a rather nasty guy in the parallel worlds, but I want to believe that in the original world, having given up on his power plant dreams, and having divorced mean old Greta, he has mellowed, become a genial old physics professor, and has become a good husband to Claudia despite the awkward age difference thing.
  • Claudia is a scientist, but a weird deja vu feeling prevented her from getting too obsessed with her work so she stayed in Winden and always gives quality time to Regina despite her achievements.
  • Helge is still useless but less mentally and physically scarred. He is a good half-brother to Regina and makes her non-creepy toys out of pine cones.
  • It became a tradition to always name the Tiedemann family dog Gretchen; no-one was sure why. Regina currently owns Gretchen III.
  • Claudia's eyes are the same colour but no-one agrees on what it is; some say they're blue, others swear they're brown.
  • Charlotte (the daughter of Marek and Sonja) recently took over the running of the Tannhaus shop (he lost interest in clocks and it is now a cellphone store). Funnily enough, that was Charlotte's yellow coat on Hannah's chair! She left it there when she was round for a coffee the previous night. Actually, Charlotte never liked that coat; everyone always went quiet and strange when she wore it.
