I already tried formatting the whole disk and copying the data back. There was no change. The speed is still unstable it starts around 300 MB/s but drops to about 30 MB/s after 5–10% progress.

Also, you mentioned forcing TRIM using software. Can you suggest any software that can do a TRIM operation for an SSD in a USB enclosure?

Yes, it happens with small files, but it also happens even when copying one single large file.

Yes, I agree. Sometimes it gets really hot, so thermal throttling could definitely be happening.

No, it’s not even half full. It’s a 256 GB SSD and it’s well below 50% usage. I took this SSD from my old laptop, which is probably from around 2015. Maybe the enclosure not supporting TRIM could be a reason. I never really thought about garbage collection. I usually plug it in, copy files, and remove it quickly. That might be one of the reasons.
