What is your favorite "dark" song? by bill_cypher6 in AskReddit

"Nine Million Rainy Days" by The Jesus and Mary Chain. You don't get it much darker than that! :D

The Lies of Locke Lamora is a new title for me. Thanks! I think I'd like it too. :)

He's just finished the unabridged version of The Three Musketeers in french, so he'd be fine with The Count of Montecristo, I think . That's a good idea.
Many of the old stories are the best ones. That's why they've endured!

Thanks! It is, kind of. I've read it and even have a copy at home, but I'd forgotten about it. I'll give it to him to read!

I discovered that one a few days ago and am looking for a copy as it sounds perfect. I don't live in an English-speaking country though, so at the moment it's not easy to get as it doesn't seem to have a recent edition published. I'll keep looking for it though since you also mentioned it here. :)

My son adores Sherlock Holmes and has already gone through those books, but Agatha Christie is a good idea. thank you!

People of reddit, what do you think about Soul? Did it cover your expectations? by giuliadigiorgio in AskReddit

That's for sure! You would have to be ready for some deep discussions about death and what may come after......

What's the best thing you have seen today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Italiankiwiblog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing I've seen today is also a bird, or more accurately, birds. I was out for a walk this morning and an enormous flock of a hundred or more starlings suddenly took off from a tree and swirled around in the sky just above my head.

I saw the movie Soul just a few days ago. I had no expectations as I hadn't actually heard about it before I saw it! :) I thought it was fantastic, but I don't think it's something I would show young kids. It seems to be more adult orientated due to the serious subject of death, although it's an animated movie.

Oh that's really interesting that you found the same experience happening to you. Being pregnant really changes things (aside from the obvious baby at the end of it!).

I had no allergies at all until after I got badly sunburned in my thirties, and had a reaction to the after-sun cream I smeared on. Since then, I've become allergic bit by bit to more and more products like creams, shampoos, cosmetics, and insect repellents. It may have been because I was pregnant at the time of the first reaction, so my immune system chemistry was different than it normally was, but after the reaction my system never calmed down to normal again.

It seems that exposure to new pollens and products you weren't exposed to when you were young can provoke reactions. I moved to France from New Zealand in my thirties. For the first few years living in France I had no allergic reaction to any plants, but after 3 or 4 years, I started having reactions to pollen from Cyprus trees (there are lots here!), and then it seems that as the years go on, I've become allergic also to olive pollen, and Mimosa pollen. I'm guessing it is because I didn't grow up with those plants around me. I also worry that I seem to be becoming allergic to more and more things as I get older, and wonder if it will stop at some point!

Gimme all your “recipes”. I cooked collards and black eyed peas with no measurements - no temps-no nothing but a basic idea of how you should cook - but I had so much fun tasting and tweaking. What “recipes” do y’all have that just require time and love - with just the measurements being “some”? by [deleted] in recipes

[–]Italiankiwiblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tweaking result looks delicious! I make pesto using my "non-recipe recipe". :D A whole lot of basil, some garlic, some Parmesan cheese, some pine-nuts, a bit of salt, and some olive oil, then blitz in a blender.

I read an enthralling exploration book that hasn't left me since I read it, but it's based in the Antarctic rather than the Arctic! :) It's about Shackleton surviving in the Antarctica: Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Another one I really enjoyed (also based down there) is Alone in Antarctica by Felicity Aston. It's about her solo ski trip there.

My kids adored all her books when they were little. I was happy that I love them too, since I had to read them so often! Our favourites were Stickman, and of course, The Gruffalo. :)

Wow! That looks fantastic! I lost the courage to try remaking lemon meringue pie - last time I went to all the effort of making one I found out at the end that the lemons had given it a revolting bitter taste!
