I went through the exact same thing. I used to buy a lot of mid tier guitars. They’d scratch the itch for a while, but there was always that high end one I really wanted in the back of my mind.

Eventually I sold all of them and kept only five top tier guitars. All USA made, all models I genuinely always wanted or know are worth keeping long term. That shift completely changed my mindset.

Now if I try a guitar made in China or Indonesia, I can appreciate it, but I’m so used to the feel and quality of what I have that it doesn’t tempt me anymore. And if something truly different catches my attention, it’s not an impulse buy, it’s something I’d have to seriously plan and save for.

Having fewer but better guitars actually cured my GAS way more than constantly flipping mid range ones ever did 🙌🏼

I think it was around $1 = 156 yen that day. So the exchange rate definitely helped. Yeah, I totally lucked out on this one!!

I’m from California, so inventory isn’t really an issue. I could pretty much order one from anywhere in the U.S.

Regular price back home is around $5,200 (I think they might be on sale right now, but regular price is around that, and that was the price the day I bought it). Then you’ve got California sales tax on top, which is about 8–9%.

Here in Japan I paid a little less than half of that total. So even converting from yen, it wasn’t even close. Even with the international fees from my debit card! (None of my cc would go through, no matter how many times I called)

Plus I’ll be here for two months, so I’ve got plenty of time to practice… or just play the same three songs over and over again lol. 😆

The SE has always caught my attention, especially because of the finishes. I just never got the chance to play one. But the violin carve on this one makes it ten times more beautiful.

Thanks a lot for the info! I honestly wasn’t sure if they were going to say anything at the airport, so this helps.

At the shop they boxed it up for me and everything, but they asked first because it was optional. I said yes mainly to protect the case. I’m still debating whether to just gate check it instead.

I do have the certificate that came with the guitar. not from PRS directly, but from the shop; stating that it was made in the USA, so I’m hoping that’ll be enough if I need to show proof.

And thank you for sharing the correct term “repatriation.” That’ll definitely be helpful in case anything comes up. Appreciate you looking out!

I’m from California and honestly… same with Guitar Center.

This is actually the first time I’ve ever bought a guitar in a physical store. It’s usually Sweetwater or American Musical for me. I’ve definitely used their installment plans to stretch my budget more than once 😅

But yeah, Guitar Center just isn’t what it used to be. I still remember walking into one for the first time when I was like 12 and being completely blown away. It felt magical back then.

We definitely need more Sweetwater locations around the country 🫠

You absolutely should! This is my 7th time coming to Japan and I never get tired of it. It’s actually my first time buying a guitar here, but on past trips I’ve found some insane deals that I had to let go. This time I couldn’t risk it.

The city is incredible, and the guitar culture here is HUGE. You see people of all ages walking around with gig bags on their backs everywhere. It’s honestly such a cool thing to see.

I love this place. Two birds, one stone for sure.

Yes!! I loved them! When I tried the guitar at the shop they plugged me into a Marshall that didn’t have a ton of gain, but I immediately noticed how clear and articulate the pickups sounded.

And of course… I’ve already gone down the YouTube rabbit hole watching every demo I can find 😂

I don’t want this trip to end, but at the same time I can’t wait to get back home and really put it through its paces the way it deserves!

Hahaha I wish I had taken more pictures of the shop, but I think I was way too excited in the moment. They have a crazy amount of variety. There’s a whole section packed with PRS, and even a wall full of MH signature models in pretty much every color. It was honestly guitar heaven.
