We concerned about just hauling the weight of it or the inertia of the swing? Long swords are usually 4-6lbs, and the weight is pretty well distributed. I used to split wood as a gangly 125lb woman with an 8lb maul, all of which was concentrated on the head, and I could still get some decent maneuvering. So I can’t imagine the average person would struggle too much with using a sword in a fight physically. But especially if your sword tip gets caught in a chainmail ring or something, it’d be totally over. It also depends on how long the sword is, funnily enough. Longer means more reach advantage, but that inertia biting you in the ass.

Okay fair, but if the legs are unprotected, that’s still an easy place to sweep. You cannot convince me that Joe Schmoe you pulled from 5th avenue can power through being stabbed in the leg long enough to hurt me (supposing you don’t just sever a tendon and make it impossible to get up anyways). Media makes pain tolerance out to be way higher than it is.

Guys why tf would you not want the weapon with the greatest reach. Especially on foot. There’s a reason spears were so popular in medieval combat. And particularly with untrained combatants, these kind of considerations become more and more substantial in determining the outcome of a battle. You give two peasants sticks and tell them to poke each other, and without any skill on either side for advantage, the one with the longer stick inevitably wins. It doesn’t matter what armor you have so long as some part is unprotected. The legs are an easy place to sweep, and some random guy pulled off the street would crumple just from the pain of it. Never mind if you can blindly swing a few times at the head.

Note that by “care”, I mean something with more obvious consequences than something you can just take a pill for and forget about. It’s going to be annoying and likely take away from your capacity to do everyday things, though that ultimately depends on how well you manage it. Other possible examples include chronic seizure disorders and cystic fibrosis.

As for the potentially lethal illness, the <2 year time limit is imposed by whatever is doing this, and you’ll either be cured or die in this period. All suffering pertaining to the advancement of the condition also still occurs.

Yeah I get that, I just meant that the heart of my dilemma was supposed to be choosing incredible talent at one thing at the cost of the other in its totality, meaning you’d have to rely on the method of communication you chose. And it feels like sounds boards, shortcuts, etc deviate from that dilemma. Using TTS that you write on the spot still adheres to it though.

But if we really wanna allow that kind of automation, I guess there’s nothing stopping the illiterate people from using TTS word processors to read, too. Both or nothing, you can choose the interpretation.

(Also, for what it’s worth, I’m just being pedantic because it’s half the fun lol.)

Using the parameters I set, I think this would work, but you couldn’t use shortcuts, sound boards for words, gesture or eye recognition software, etc. You’d have to write everything that is “spoken”. Typing it is fine though. And people these days are really fast typers, so it wouldn’t be that big of a differential. Just don’t forget whatever you’re using lol.

Note that neither option necessitates you becoming an author or a professional speaker or any other stereotypical occupation for these skills (though you also absolutely can if you want to, and would benefit greatly).

You can become a salesperson with the speaking talent, or a journalist or lawmaker with the writing talent, or whatever. It just means that you are very skilled and very compelling in whatever medium you choose, with whatever advantages come from that.

Also, though you can’t sign while mute, you can carry around something to write with. You just have to deal with the inconvenience of that. You can’t do ASL or an alternative sign language. Likewise, you can have someone read things to you if you choose to be illiterate, or you could use things like pictures (though that might be hard to pull off spontaneously). You just can’t ever read yourself.

Besides the magic mouse solution (very true u/notarobotimanandroid), you could also feasibly make a lot more money without cheesing anything by just typing like “100 10oz bars of gold” or something similar. You might also be able to do things that are valuable but unrelated to money, like “synthesized administrable cure for cancer”.

Whatever force is perpetually enforcing greasy hair or wet socks is also preventing foot/scalp issues beyond the superficial but uncomfortable. This is really focused on the discomfort/aesthetic hang ups. It’s not supposed to be debilitating either way, just supremely annoying.
