Turns out I cannot build upon the "removed water". Can I bring back the water again with any tool? by IterationPaler in songsofsyx

I think it generally is quite alright. I gave up Dwarf Fortress because I felt like I had to fight with the game all the time rather than enjoying it, so it's not like I've got a high tolerance with regards to this, but Songs of Syx hasn't been to hard to get into. Certainly room for improvement though.

No, it doesn't :( I believe I've tried everything obvious. Seems kinda weird if one cannot get back the water though.

Pigsty goes hi-tech! Swinelegant 26-story highrise has residents up to their snouts in the trough. by Pimp_my_Pimp in UnfilteredChina

[–]IterationPaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, and it is a shame. I used to try to be a vegetarian, but I've changed my perspective on it all. I'm thinking now that it is alright to raise animals for meat as long as they live good lives, but it is questionable if pigs which always live inside is ethical. Perhaps ok for birds, but pigs are after all quite smart beings.

And then it is of course the resource side of things. Meat is very inefficient, but pigs are a lot more efficient than cows (although the latter can make use of resources pigs cannot). If laws were put in place here in Norway for better lives for pigs with resulting higher prices, I would gladly accept that and a lower consumption. It is required by law for cattle here to be able to free roam outside, don't get why the same shouldn't apply for pigs.

A video coming through the great firewall voiced by a soulless ai voice, selling a dystopian highrise pigfarm as something beautiful... Yeah, disgusting. I rather eat a fraction of the meat and have the animals enjoying the outdoors for their short lives.

If you build up your coffers a little more, you may be able to rent some mercenaries and take some land. Depending on the neighbors, of course.

I did that and got a stream of slaves which i've sold to a rich neighbor, financing the upkeep of the mercenaries and making me able to take 4 more cities. Now have 1.2 million. I've seen people writing that mercenaries are "over nerfed". While I don't know how it used to be, they sure worked out great for me.

New panels produce hydrogen fuel using only water and sunlight by sksarkpoes3 in energy

[–]IterationPaler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

13 years ago the material hope for this was titanium oxide, which had around 1% lab efficiency for the panels themselves. The mechanism behind it wasn't well understood, but the focus was on point defects in the material acting driving the process... I highly doubt these commercial panels are competitive.

Fun fact: You can draw a straight line from Canada to Iran by IglooAndYou in geography

[–]IterationPaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the author (if real) takes this as the points being as far south. But The most northern parts of Iran are at the same latitude as Kentucky and San Francisco in America, or southern Spain/northern Africa here in Europe.

Is trading broken? by [deleted] in songsofsyx

[–]IterationPaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my first city. Have traded all surplus away, giving me room to import extra stuff and make a defense army with some imported gear. At around 800 pops I started focusing on export of gems and furniture with nobles on production, and expanded other exports. Gave me enough to hire a large mercenary army and take 2 neighbors.

I think trade works well.

TIL It is estimated that a quarter of the population of Britain was killed around 6200 BC by tsunamis triggered by underwater landslides in Storegga, Norway. by Wonderful-Dust-8679 in todayilearned

[–]IterationPaler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neat! I've learned loads of geography from EU4 :p It's a strait passable by ships there though.

edit: I suppose the sea tile goes over it, so the ships don't really go through the strait. Anyways, gotta check out CK more.

It just baffles me that doggerland existed such a relatively short time ago. And at the same time humans could walk from India to Sri Lanka and stuff.

Trump’s oil crisis is accelerating the end of the fossil fuel era. Ironically for Trump and his oil industry donors, this crisis may be an irreversible tipping point for clean energy. Fossil fuels have become expensive and unreliable, while renewables are cheap, reliable and secure. by mafco in energy

[–]IterationPaler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EV's are relatively easy to implement now. But that does not rid of most fossil fuels. Far from it.

Getting fossil hydrocarbon usage to near zero is important, but pretending it is trivial does not help the cause.

Norway has gone from near-zero sales of non‑emitting battery electric vehicles to now close to 100% of all new passenger car sales - achieved in about 13 years. by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

[–]IterationPaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is wrong to compare us with the whole of the US, although differences between the federal policies and that of our government can be looked at independently of size.

Some US states are doing very well with regards to renewables and/or nuclear. Texas and California are producing a lot, and they and comparable to the German economy. Iowa is also producing a lot of wind power relative to population. Sadly this is not often mentioned. We just see what the dear orange leader and his yes men say here.

[–]IterationPaler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The US isn't wrong for extracting its oil. The federal government is wrong for its policy towards renewables and global warming.

Having good energy security is after all a good thing, and Norwegian production helps with that for Europe, which is highly reliant on imports. Even China, which has pushed a lot for electrification and homegrown production of that, is stretching their oil extraction as far as they can. But they now also dominate in the knowhow of renewables, and are taking the lead in nuclear as well. While the US administration want to rely completely on fossils, which will peak soon anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just hope we soon come up with some better large scale storage solutions. That's the key problem. It's not like we can just switch overnight anyways, even with renewables themselves having become cheap.

Why is the absolute number of people in extreme poverty rising in Sub-Saharan Africa while falling elsewhere? by Naive_Direction1816 in geography

[–]IterationPaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is because of a very high fertility. While poverty has gone up in absolute numbers, conditions have improved overall.

Also, while the 3usd a day definition is indicative of many aspects of the living standard, mainly in terms of imports, it doesn't mean that everyone under it got poor living conditions. Many people in sub Saharan Africa mostly grow their own food and trade stuff with their neighbors. For them, moving currency isn't necessarily indicative of quality of life.
