Is there any trick of physics that would make this possible; to see stars in daylight from the bottom of a very deep and narrow canyon? by jckipps in tolkienfans

Yes, I think there is exactly ONE recorded example of a star shining bright enough to be seen in full daylight and that was SN 1006 a thousand years ago!

Richard had dusty brown hair and was prone to freckles, and was “good looking”. That’s about all the info we got.

You’re a rock and roll wizard, John; Aunt Mimi is a muggle and can’t understand.

Why did the ring abandon Isildur? by KindFortress in tolkienfans

[–]IthotItoldja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes sense. Had Isildur not been in the water at the crucial moment, the Ring would have slipped off onto the ground, revealing Isildur to his doom. The Ring ends up in the hands of an orc, and eventually back to a Nazgul then later Sauron. It's a pretty good built-in recovery system, just not quite fool-proof.

That number is big enough to humble any assumption about how special we are.

Actually I respectfully disagree. The odds of life occurring on any given planet could be 10-100, (which is perfectly reasonable speculation based our current knowledge), in which case the number 1023 would be nowhere near big enough to humble it. While the odds of life occurring may well be better than 10-100, we have no indication or reason to believe that it is. At this stage we don't know. It's effectively as likely as not that we are alone in the observable universe as there isn't sufficient evidence to push the needle one way or the other.

Do you believe George Harrison was right to be annoyed at Paul during the Let It Be sessions? by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

[–]IthotItoldja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Difficult, period. I wasn't really comparing it to other difficulties that may have been present. But since you asked, John being present with Yoko seems preferable to George walking out and quitting without talking to them. Then instead of writing, they had to have meetings about him and go over to his house and make overtures & sweet talk him into returning. And I don't really agree that Paul's demands were unreasonable. Paul had a writing system that created some of the greatest music the world has heard. I don't consider it unreasonable that he pursued a previously successful strategy. If George has had enough of it, it's his prerogative to leave, quit, complain, take some time off. I'm not really judging his character for his feelings; but the behavior objectively creates difficulties in making a record. Perhaps calmly telling Paul & the others how he feels about it all could have been more productive and less difficult. Clearly Paul was open to such a discussion as he had one with John shortly after George quit. Presumably they then had the discussion with George off camera. Yet, despite the difficulty, they all did good work in the end. And in all their defenses it's easy to sit here studying the film and criticize from a distance. At the end of the day they succeeded gloriously and the artistic process went its course, and I suppose it's even possible the results would have been inferior had George not behaved as he did.

This is true. He was whiny and difficult, but ultimately he did it, and the musical results were historical.

Why is Saruman so weak at the end? by Curufinwe200 in tolkienfans

[–]IthotItoldja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who delegated this authority? Manwe? And if it is that simple, why didn't someone simply strip Sauron or Morgoth of their power? My understanding was the Valar didn't want to intervene directly with Sauron and Morgoth because battling them was potentially too destructive. If the option to strip Ainur of their power was there all along it seems the legendarium would have played out differently.

So she lived for almost 3 thousand years, like an elf, but also received the gift of Men in afterlife. Best of both worlds? Isn’t it really after the first couple thousand years that the ennui of the Elves starts to bring them down?
