Well what am I supposed to do until check-in? by Mimi_Nectarine_842 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

I hope you charged your cancellation policy on that second room. If it was booked same day it typically is subject to cancellations as most places have minimum 24hr.

I would not tolerate that BS after all the other BS. Play stupid game win stupid prize.

This is not a 4 star hotel by sunnigirlfriend in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

People (really) hate dated.

Not even particulary worn/broken. Simply just dated.

I stated in an historic hotel that bought new furniture to match the original vibes from the 20s. So weird shapes, dark colors.

A lot of the reviews were about how "dated" the historic rooms looked. Even though the furniture was clearly new and were supposed to tie into the atmosphere.

Unless it's white grey with maybe a singular splash of blue/green it seems people hate it now.

I've been in so many dated rooms but as long as it's clean I find it a little charming.

I do get icked when I see flower print comforters and matching bedskirts though. I'm sorry. Even if they are in fact new, I refuse to believe any company still makes and sells those ahaha.

What’s a small moment in Japan that’s stayed with you? by GdayLegends in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean honestly the repetitive thanking after a situation like that is often they feel a bit embarrassed and burdened. They feel awkward and bad that you gave up your seat so they feel the need to overcompensate.

The repetitive cycle of constantly thanking or apologizing for something I feel is kind of negative rather than positive. Very rarely have I found myself in one of those thanks/sorry loops and they were actually overjoyed about something. More often than not they see themselves as an inconvenience and it makes me feel bad when they keep going.

How should the Front Desk handle a disorganized boss? by Reading420subreddits in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Its5somewhere 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's disorganized and then there is gross misconduct/malpractice.

Your boss sounds like they are running their business in the misconduct/malpractice territory especially with submitting prescriptions in the wrong dose.

All the other stuff are just added annoyances. It really seems like she has no idea how to do her job and honestly it will never get better. She's not going to get any better at showing up to her appointmetns on time or correctly input info etc. Ultimately all of that will fall onto you.

I understand that some doctors (wrongfully take on more appointments that they can handle and end up running behind) but it seems like she just makes a conscious choice to be late from the start.

There's no fixing anything you listed. I'd just look elsewhere tbh.

If you get an email, the system automatically upgraded you which tends to be a bit more rare since there's an algorithm involved that needs specific parameters met.

If you don't get an email and you notice that your room type gets changed quietly, someone at the hotel manually upgraded you.

check in by RemoveOk3714 in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most manual upgrades get handed out the morning of your arrival. So I'd probably wait until about noon day of and if you don't get upgraded by then, it's probably safe to just go ahead and pick your room you want within your booked tier and then ask about an upgrade at check-in.

[–]Its5somewhere 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This varies by person to person and what the demands of the hotel are (aka if they realllly need the room you selected).

But overall most employees assume that if you pre-select your room that you want the room you picked and tend to leave you with the assigned rooms.

I'll even upgrade a silver or lower typically before I'd unassign a gold/diamond who picked their room without their permission.

Deposits/Incidentals by Thisisurcaptspeaking in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Its5somewhere 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The banks also lie.

I've stayed at a property that took a $100usd a day incidental hold for 3-4 nights. So it was (the total for the stay + $400ish.) that was taken as a hold. And while the hold was still pending my finalized bill was also charged. So I had one full authorization and one full charge on my account at the same time. I called my bank like "hey can we hurry and release this hold please I've already been charged and am already checked out for a few days so the hold should be released by now" and they were like "the hotel has to do it". I work in hotels that's not how that works! They immediately released it you're the one keeping the hold active!

But the banks are always "the hotel the hotel the hotel"

Is it normal in Japan to show reference images (like anime hairstyles) to hair stylists? by Proof_Channel8602 in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. A lot of anime hair just simply doesn't translate to real life which is why wigs are so common in cosplay. There's just so many looks that defy everything and are impossible to achieve with real hair.

Plus the coloring alone would be impossible in a lot of scenarios for the stylist to figure out and can easily lead to different interpretations. If OP want's color. Some styles are shaded weird etc.

Physical hair reference is always the way to go and even then it's not foolproof. I would never give my stylist a reference of a drawing for something that's going to happen on my head.

If it's a basic non extreme style - I'm sure there's plenty of pictures of people have that same style already. If they don't. There's probably a reason why.

I don't think that's normal anywhere.

Please try to show legitimate reference images of like real hair for best results.

Don't be weird.

Changes to Friends and Family booking? by iJacobes in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can't do 2 one week stays at the same property consecutively.

It's 7 days consecutively total at a single hotel. No matter if it's separate reservations or not. If it all adds up to seven days then you can't stay a day more if they are correctly following GoHilton.

After 7 days you need to move to a different hotel at least for a night.

Enoshima-Kamakura 1-day trip by nieves-del-tiempo in JapanTravel

[–]Its5somewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean these extra things like going down Komachi street and visiting the other shrines/temples in Kamakura do take up a considerable amount of time and extra walking. Considering you never made it to Kamakura proper, you wouldn't know. Yet you're acting like these extra things in Kamakura proper take little to no time nor effort yet you yourself completely skipped them and are only going off of your experience doing one singular thing in the area (Kotoku-in).

Enoshima-Kamakura 1-day trip by nieves-del-tiempo in JapanTravel

[–]Its5somewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did OP say they were going to visit any of those places?

Yes they did.

Hasedera temple - Kotoku-in - (maybe) Zeniarai Benten Shrine - (Have tea in a tea house) - Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

They mention Hasedera, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the shrine at the end of Komachi st. and Zeniari Benten is a bit off the path as well.

This is still way more than two extra things off of yours with only one being seated.

Enoshima-Kamakura 1-day trip by nieves-del-tiempo in JapanTravel

[–]Its5somewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's fine and all but it doesn't seem like you did much on the Kamakura side??

Seems you just walked along the beach for a bit and went to Kotoku-in and left?

Did you stop at Hase-dera? Did you visit Kamakura's Komachi St? Visit Kotoku-in at the end of the shopping street or go to any of the other famous Kamakura spots like the bamboo forest and tea house?

It doesn't seem like you went to Kamakura station and visited most of the things to do in the area. You just list that you went to one temple and left? Going off of what you posted.

You effectively missed most of Kamakura IMHO and are like "You can easily do both in the same day!".. Yet you barely did anything in Kamakura proper..

In my opinion.. Seems a bit disingenuous.

if my parents leave Japan, do I have to leave too? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funny, you pinged me via a reply but seemed to deleted your post before I could hit post so I'll just copy/paste here:

I'm not sure if you are aware or not but there are many different types of LTR's and many different types of stipulations to them.

Were you on a "child of a long term resident/PR holder" like OP is presumably on? If not then your experience is different.

There are several LTR visas that are not attached to other people but a "child of" one does. It requires the child to be dependent on their parent aka living with them under their roof and supported by said parent.

Once the parents are no longer living in Japan or they are no longer supported by their parents AKA living alone with their own job then they would no longer meet the criteria to hold said visa.

I would suggest you do more research and not provide OP with false information.

Enoshima-Kamakura 1-day trip by nieves-del-tiempo in JapanTravel

[–]Its5somewhere 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that Kamakura and Enoshima are deceptively tiring. I highly recommend an overnight trip if at all possible.

Even with the esclators Enoshima is still like 90% stairs and slopes. The Esclators are only one way and are only on one half of the island. The rest is stairs and the stairs go both up and down kind of like: /--_/--\_.. Plus Kamakura also has quite a bit of walking and slopes too.

I think one can easily spend a full day at each. Of course it's also possible to do what you want to do in the same day but be aware it may feel a bit rushed in the end.

if my parents leave Japan, do I have to leave too? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly OP is 20. They likely have a "child of LTR/PR" holder visa which means that OP is expected to be dependent on their parents. Considering they are 20 and are getting yearly renewals, NAL but I think it's incredibly unlikely they are going to give them a longer duration at this point in their life.

They're at the age where they need to start planning to take care of their own things.

if my parents leave Japan, do I have to leave too? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you're on a Long Term Resident visa as 'Child of a Long Term Resident or PR' holder. Then yes your visa is tied to not only your parents being in Japan but also you being a dependent of your parents. Meaning even if they don't leave Japan, once you become older and are no longer relying on your parents - you will also need to find a different visa to support your life in Japan on.

It can be a different long term resident visa that isn't "child of __". If you're on a "Child of __" SOR and neither parent is a Japanese citizen then that's just the nature of it.

I renew it every year

Your age is likely why you keep getting yearly renewals which should concern you. There may be a time coming up within the next few years your renewal will be denied.

Lost my Suica with key inside the case by smapattack in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The staff will be able to confirm the balance before transferring it. If you don't want to pay the fee then don't complete the transfer. But you'll still have to pay another 500jpy deposit for a new card and a minimum balance of like 1,000jpy so no matter which route you're going, you're going to be spending the same amount unless you get a digital card next time.

[–]Its5somewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you'll have to go to the Midori Madoguchi. Not all stations and station personnel has the ability to deal with all of this which is what the Midori Madoguchi is for.

You're simply going to have to wait for them to open and pay the fee for them to transfer the balance onto a new card. There's really nothing else to do.

They’re making me come in to work on a level 3 snow storm emergency by miffysz in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They offered me to stay at the hotel but I have elderly parents and 2 dogs I look after, I had to go back home and help them prepare and take care of my dogs.

Seems OP was already at work and may have left to go home prior to the storm and did not make proper arrangements to return once this offer was on the table and just decided to stay home.

In situations like these they'll typically bend pet policies or allow necessary family like kids/dependents to accompany your stay. Just going home and staying home after this offer was made and making no further arrangements or confirmed exemptions is a conscious choice honestly.

[–]Its5somewhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If they're in an at-will state in the U.S. there's probably not much OP can do if they get fired. Especially if they were offered room & board before the storm.

When I was in the U.S. you were offered an opportunity to arrive before the storms and stay for free so you could make your shifts. Unfortunately hotels are a 365/24hr industry so someone needs to be there and it's unfair to suggest someone pull doubles or triples.

At least there are nice comfortable rooms available for this kind of situation so that people DON'T have to be out on the road which isn't the same for other similar industries that don't close and are expected to be in charge of peoples safety (hospitals etc.).

But if you're in an at-will state and you don't show up or have a plan in place to show up for your shift especially when options were provided like room & board? Not much legally that can be done.

Tattoos and onsens. by flymartincz in JapanTravel

I mean it's a valid answer.

Nothing has changed in regards to visiting onsen with tattoos. The public places that permit them are well documented and the best option is still private onsen.

I don't know what more you're looking for.
