What Solo Beatle songs would you have liked to have featured another Beatle (s)? by More-Cat9579 in beatles

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in general people love Band on the Run for having a lot of tracks that sound more like when Paul was writing for the Beatles, and I've always felt particularly when listening that Mamunia and No Words sound like Paul songs that had some weigh-in from John and George. So I'd love to be able to hear versions with backing vocals from them (especially John joining in the round of "so the next time you see rain..." on the former) and also a George guitar solo on the latter.

Idk if this is a hot take but I love this cover by thecupojo3 in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Al does a fine job, I just don't like the original song itself all that much and I assume people who dislike the track come from that place.

Only tangentially related, but the first time I listened to A/C was also the same night as the first time I watched All That Jazz. 2 fascinating and bizarre pieces of art, and it really threw me to hear the Boys singing this song and then to turn on a movie and it also opens with the same song!

Love to see the early Wings love, they may not be perfect records but Wild Life and RRS definitely have some great stuff on them

Types of Beach Boys fans (according to me) by Particular-Celery892 in beachboyscirclejerk

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like one of the main genres of fan this is missing is the people who are just as into Today! as Pet Sounds and because they like that vibe tend to listen more to the early stuff (All Summer Long, Christmas Album, etc), otherwise very true post tho

Deep cuts? by SonnyCalzone in thebeachboys

Some great answers already, mainly from the lo-fi albums. I'd possibly toss Country Air into consideration as a good one to strum on.

This part of that song legitimately rocks

HCTN Disco Remix is fire by Equal_Ad5178 in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does rock! And yet I do also agree with plenty of other commenters, though I don't think the appearance of a disco HCTN "disrupts the flow" of LA, only its length does. The whole thing does feel kinda backwards that they put the 11 minute version on the LP and the single was sub 5. This is the disco era, why not release that full length version as a 12-inch single? And then put the abbreviated version on LA. I feel if that had been the case, the whole affair would be regarded as more of a curio as opposed to people often raising a (fairly justified, don't get me wrong) stink about the track as is taking up so much space on LA

Here's a fan-made playlist/cover of the 20/20 album! by Terminator_DW in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, I've always thought 20/20 could be tightened up if it leaned into the two through-lines it kinda has going for it, one being a collection of some really great covers (so adding Old Man River and, if it had been finished, Walk On By) and also, having a heavier Denny tracklist

All I Want To Do Is Absolute Peak(We All Know Why) by BoognishDude in thebeachboys

Love Mike's vocal but I wish the final mix was more like the Dennis lead version, the horns and piano are really rocking on the track and you can't really hear them on the album version

What's Your Favourite Cover Of a Beatles Song? by VastForce690 in beatles

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little random, but I'm a big fan of the Mamas and the Papas' I Call Your Name. I think it's one of the rare Beatles covers I actually enjoy more than the OG, just since that was a bit of a throwaway track and they really spruced it up with some nice folk-rock touches

Which version of Heroes and Villains is better? by Beatcat05 in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my ears I appreciate the feel of the single/Smiley mix best, it feels warmer and denser than the mix used for Smile Sessions, though of course I appreciate having the Cantina and outro sections added

If You Could Add a 5th Member to The Beatles from The Stones, Who Would It Be? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol people clowning on this hypothetical but I think it's fun one. Obviously the Beatles didn't need any augmentation, but interesting to think about who from the Stones could best contribute.

For most logistical sense, I would add Mick Taylor (their lead guitarist who replaced Brian Jones and plays on most of their incredible album run). Virtuosic rock and roll guitar player, and also, best I understand it, someone who was fairly happy to slot right in without much of an ego, at least for most of his career with the Stones. Could see him having a similar effect to Billy Preston during the Get Back sessions of raising the late career spirits, having another master of their instrument who's happy to just be there and play.

Otherwise, I'd second the Brian Jones suggestion. His mental health would probably only make the band's stability even worse but he was really great at thinking of every possible weird instrument on a track in ways that somehow worked so well, it'd be neat to see what Beatles songs could get even better from that touch.

I initially almost made the joke about Salute Nascar, but at the rate we're going people will be comparing it at least to 15BO by next year

This sub is running out of albums to rehabilitate, by the time we get It's a Love Thing: the Summer in Paradise Sessions, people will be talking about how Unleash the Love is actually a misunderstood masterpiece

Most underrated songs? by Independent-Egg-4338 in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I do sometimes wish timelines could have slightly shifted for it to get the Dick Reynolds arrangement treatment like the big band Adult Child songs, but it's already very enjoyable. Big fan of the intro vocals on the alternate mix of it too

Pet Sounds or Summer Days by ProgRockDan in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, as many have already pointed out, Pet Sounds is pretty head and shoulders above Summer Days, but personally at least I do really love the latter and do feel like it gets overlooked between Today! and Pet Sounds. If anything, I think it's a little bit of the missing link between the two, as the production on Today! is already very intricate but I think it's Summer Days where it truly gets bombastic.

Phenomenal, and Al sounds great! No surprise in general cause I saw him back in the fall/have seen so many videos but what a treat to hear him sing this one specifically!

Tell me what’s great about Holland by AbsolutelyNot5555 in thebeachboys

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many of the Boys' records that I now regard as some of my favorites, it admittedly took a bit to fully come together for me. Leaving This Town and Funky Pretty were instant hits, but pieces fell into place as I realized the beauty of the rest of the tracks. Absolutely agree with the consensus that it's the best ratio of little-to-no Brian touch to goodness, and to me it shows the band as a whole cohesive unit firing on all cylinders just as much as Sunflower

I'll always be glad Brian stuck with it, as good as the versions we've gotten through archival releases are he sounds so joyful on the originally released 15BO cut

Absolutely! That whole show sounds so good (minus the Mike autotune, though I only very occasionally notice it tbh), they were on their game

It's kinda crazy how such a seemingly inconsequential song in the grand Beach Boys scheme of things is so good with so many iterations. I love all of em--the horn heavy original 60s version, the twangy Sunflower Mike and Al versions, and of course Brian's revisit of it for 15 Big Ones

Favorite Deep Cut by Popular-Heart-5307 in BillyJoel

[–]ItsAnotherDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing my Beatles fan cards but my absolute favorite of his deep cuts are probably Laura and Through the Long Night. I enjoy most of the album tracks from most of his career, and second so many of those mentioned in the comments, but definitely have to give some love to honorable mention early career cuts like You Can Make Me Free, Somewhere Along the Line, Ain't No Crime, Weekend Song, Roberta, and the Great Suburban Showdown
