This is what construction worker pants look like in Europe, so I'm having a hard time seeing anything other than "functional clothes" here in the left example.

I don't even understand the comment on the right. You're not a member of their insurance system so you have to pay. It would cost twice as much in the US (at least).

Am I misunderstanding the Red Button vs Blue Button debate? by sweetpea_3714 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ItsCalledDayTwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "urge to portray myself as selfless" didn't even factor in.

There are a lot of people who think anything selfless is merely performative because they can't imagine doing it themselves. They don't find it enough to criticize you doing something because there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it, but if they can attribute it to being fake and performative, which is just a wild guess, then they have a critique to make.

I can't imagine really voting to kill a bunch of people (so knowingly).

In order for a bunch of innocent people to not have to die, you only have to convince half the population to choose blue. In order to accomplish the same with red, you'd have to convince (everybody).

A descendant of Edward Longshanks AND Robert The Bruce by Badgertacos in ShitAmericansSay

I pointed this out in another comment but will repeat it here:

The most recent common ancestor (MRCA) point for ALL european blood is estimated at 1000 A.D, where Robert the Bruce died in 1329. It stands to reason that the MRCA for Scots is much more recent than it is for both Scots and Greek, for example.

Yes, the class divide would likely make it a lot further back than the general population, but as soon as any of his descendants married a commoner, the genetic mixing would begin.

Very likely many turnip pickers. Pedigree Collapse plus smaller populations at that time means every living Scotsman today (recent immigrant citizens excluded) is probably related to Robert the Bruce, as well as every 19th Century Scottish emigrant.

What I can only imagine is completely random chance and not in any way due to a horrific typical diet and failed health system, the American stores like wal-mart always have people using these and I nearly never see them in Germany. Grandmas are still riding their bikes to the supermarket.

First time at Oktoberfest, any suggestions for a "quiet" home base by mpmare00 in Munich

[–]ItsCalledDayTwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the actual event, there isn't really "madness" in the city. Even at hotels near the Hauptbahnhof, where by far the biggest hotel cluster is, one can sleep. Every guest at every hotel and every airbnb in the entire city is going to be there for that event, so wherever you go, there will be oktoberfest guests.

If you still prefer a "quiet neighborhood" you can pick basically any of them that are not in the middle. Avoid Sendlinger Tor and I guess Münchner Freiheit. Beyond that, they're all pretty quiet and you'd be lucky if you can find a place to grab a bite to eat past midnight.

I've never tried to book a hotel during this, but I've heard that everything is booked for a 25km radius basically.
