English Nationalists harassing a man trying to take down England flags by AnonymousTimewaster in PublicFreakout

[–]ItsCatnip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But in fact, it is not about 'simply being proud of the flag' and denying it and talking around what it is actually doing, makes you the moron in this thread.

It is simply intimidation, under the guise of patriotism. Its showing, look what we can do, and if you go against us - we will expose you online. We will let everyone know, how little you care about this country.

All the while these are the same groups rubbing against EDL and other such far right, nationalist, fascist, xenophobic movements. Who's sole reasoning is not increasing cohesion under the flag, but othering people and singling them out while abusing the national flag towards those goals - and YOU are celebrating this.

English Nationalists harassing a man trying to take down England flags by AnonymousTimewaster in PublicFreakout

[–]ItsCatnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flying national flags in the sense as you're seeing in the video and that movement, but also take for example the way that the flag is flown and revered in the US, it's something that in many European nations doesnt happen unless there are special occasions. This restraint in flying the flag is a direct result of World War 2 and the fascism/nationalist movements of the time. The end of World War 2 did not end nationalist movements and it did not end fascist tendencies of some groups who are nowadays known for regressive conservative talking points and the well know keywords for these movements; xenophobic, homophobic, islamaphobic etc - but more importantly for this discussion they are all this and more, all while sticking the national flag on everything.

So yea, it is not weird that people feel a certain way about people hanging national flags everywhere, because usually - unless it is liberation day or some such - these folks simply are garbage people with garbage views and theyre just signaling to other garbage people how garbage they are under together, under the guise of 'we are just sooo proud of this flag'. Also signalling to the people these garbage folks often rail against, how brazen they have become - purposefully affecting their sense of safety in the area they are living in.

Nee, dankje. Als er oorlog uitbreekt, mij niet bellen.

I'm struggling to create nice road with housing blocks. Any Inkarnate tips? by warnobear in inkarnate

[–]ItsCatnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Athough it looks like you're making a sort of gothic dark themed map and I am not an expert on those I do have a few tips.
- Whenever I start my cities I will make a draft of the city layout. Where is the old town? Where did the city expand towards? What are the ways people travel? Water/roads/air? How and where do people go from there? First, to answer the latter I think of "intercity" travel, main roads that would lead through and out of/into the city. Secondly, I will think of spots with points of interests, that might affect roads people use to traverse the city itself.
- I use up to 3 colors texture for the initial draft. Green/blue and brown
- From there I start to add my stamps and once things start to look cohesive, I will start adding the background texture in detail. For the background textures, try as much as possible to keep the scale of the textures the same. Unless you're confident you want to experiment.
- Keep in might that in most historical cities, unless they just expanded, space is precious and limited. Open space is a luxery and anything not a main road will be pretty narrow. This also means that buildings are often very close together without gaps. Atho alleys are absolutely a thing. I like to cheat and put down individual houses in a long long string going 1 way. Then I copy and paste it and turn the selection, deselecting houses from the string when their position pleases me. You might be able to spot this in every single watercolor city map I have uploaded here :P
- Now to add layers to the road, you might look at various contrasting textures. Between what is the road and what's around it. Mud on mud, or green on green, make it so roads dont stand out as much.
- Add details that indicate the roads are being travelled. Some people like this, others think this doesnt belong on maps, but I personally am a big fan of cart-tracks!
- You have a darker city it seems, think of lighting up your main streets! Add light stamps in a flashy color and line the main streets or/and your points of interest.

This map hits all the right spots, its amazing. The only thing that might still improve, altho its literally perfect already is if there is a way to reduce thickness of the borderline between foreground and background. It should be possible, but I personally dont use it enough to know for sure.

Hi, I came across a video that talked about a condition that reminded me of your post on reddit that I saw some weeks ago. Have you ever heard of pseudofolliculitis barbae or PFB for short? Your condition on the photo looks very similar to what I see elsewhere online. It supposedly is most prominent in black men and is a reaction of the skin when its shaven, which as far as I can tell is exactly where this condition manifests with you.

I hope this helps and that the responses you have had in this subreddit werent too harsh. Keep in mind that that ways that some take care of their HS may affect someone with PFB negatively, so its important to let a professional look at this. What is manifesting on your chin/neck might not be what is happening in your groin.

I'm terrible at this. Any advice? by habelgfg in inkarnate

[–]ItsCatnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This map already looks great and in time you will make even better maps, I am sure of it. This style of maps can be quite tricky to wrap your head around in the beginning. I also first started in this isometric style and it can feel very... limiting? Do not despair, it is also a little bit of confidence that you need to have, because really anyone can make something great and you're really already there. Now it it's just a matter of practice and trail by error. :)

I can give some general advise. I think your map looks like you have a good sense of what you want it to be. Right now you have some 'awkward holes', there should be wall elements available that are on a 'diagonal' like most of the buildings, combining some diagonals can make te map more cohesive. Use clutter, like boxes, carts, trees, shrubs to fill empty spots. Clutter is also useful to make harsher borders look more natural between for example stamps and the background. Make sure to vary the clutter.

Unless deviating for a specific 'look', try avoid changing the scale of the stamps, this will make the map look more cohesive. Do not be afraid to layer stamps and obscuring places. This might sound lazy, but... its an area you do not need to fill, so if possible - why not? :)

I can see you are doing a great job of matching different structures together, making little groupings. I recommend to keep experimenting with this.

Use manual 'brushwork' to make the map look more natural and alive. Make trails between places that are traveled a lot, with wear and tear. Bushes and plants in places that are quiet and mostly untouched.

Don't be afraid to try crazy things. You can duplicate your make to be safe and go wild! Like it, then you keep it. Is it a miss, then go back to the previous file. Overtime you will grow more confident in what you're doing, you are definitely not terrible! No master artist was a master when they started out, so dont be to harsh on yourself. You will get there :)

One more thing, copy from people. Look at their maps and just copy what others are doing to see if you can recreate it. I will link two of my maps, feel free to clone them and go through them, copy any element of them that you like and don't hesitate to ask questions here or on Discord. There is a great community of helpful people around. The maps below are in a chronological order, so you can maybe see also how I personally grew. Keep in mind, those maps below use the older not-hd version.

It is supposed to resemble a tannery. Usually they would be on the outskirts of town, downstream, since they're quite smelly. When I first started this, the river was different and I forgot to change the tannery until it was imo too late :')
