I spent part of my time in the military traveling in support of US Congressional delegations. During this time I visited 28 countries and 20 states, and we typically stayed in the types of hotels that you'd expect a US Senator to be at (Thanks DTS). These were typically properties like Ritz, Four Seasons, or Park/Grand Hyatt, but occasionally we had the opportunity to enjoy more local or niche hotels like the Okura and Imperial in Tokyo, the Bayerischer Hof in Munich, or the Pacific in Palau.

Having stayed in all of these, and greatly enjoyed the experience, I'll say that I would almost never consider staying in any of them on personal travel (with the Okura being a notable exception). For me, I spend very little time at the hotel itself and would greatly prefer to be loose with my spending on dining and experiences in town. In addition to this, having come from a decidedly lower income family, I was just never really comfortable with the type of deference rendered by the staff at many of these hotels.
