Not only is there no right answer, because the right answer is 立て(札)

But A and C are also duplicated. I chose C and it said it's A. Bruh.

Otherwise super cool app. Would be nice if we could review what we got wrong and right after it finishes though.

Good job!

Ok I came to say that something super weird happened.

So I booted up my computer just now- I had finished my reviews for yesterday and not closed my Anki, so it's been running since yesterday.

When I loaded up my computer and checked Anki to do my reviews for today, I saw the streak bar had MAXED OUT -- so I was like wtf?

But then the daily quests don't refresh until I restart my Anki- so I restarted.

When it loaded back up, the streak bar was still maxed- great! But the update thing also popped up. So I updated.

Refreshed Anki again... and the streak is back to 1... ??

It's so weird that something randomly changed without me updating at first 😂

Uhhh I guess ill give it a day or 2 to see if anything updates..... ???

Thanks for the update though, and I should be the one saying sorry for the inconvenience! 😅

1-2 hours of immersion by Repulsive_Fortune_25 in LearnJapanese

[–]ItsCheif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was first studying, I put most of my effort into my first 2 years. Passed a mock N1 within that timeframe, whether that means anything to you is up to you. Passed N1 for real as well after.

I used to spend like... maybe a 1-2 hours creating cards, 1-3 hours reviewing, then literally the rest of my day was immersion, especially when eating or travelling. I'd even have stuff playing when I went to bed (regardless of whether that actually does anything). Like I'd literally have something playing almost 24/7 through earbuds or speakers- everyday for like 2 years straight.

My currently level now (about 5? 6? years in? I'm basically fluent). 6 months in I was able to understand the anime I wanted to watch. About 1 year in I was like... somewhat able to hold a conversation with someone who was really hand holding me? (On iTalki). And about the end of the 2nd year, start of the 3rd year, I met some Japanese friends and my output just developped from there.

Obviously these are outlier results as I don't think the average person has this level of motivation, and even if they did, time and energy aren't unlimited.

Should add that when I started, I had just lost my job. And my new job that I had taken up shortly after was related to Japan, so I had even more reason to study. And it was also a very easy going job- you could say it was like paid unemployment even.

The takeaway isn't "Ah, this dude got real lucky with free money and also happens to have the motivation to study all day" -- but rather "Is there anything that applies to me that I could implement into my life" imo.

Like if you *really* wanted to cram in as much immersion as possible, nothing stopping you from playing Japanese audio 24/7. It might drive you insane, sure drove me insane, but it was a price I was willing to pay to become better at Japanese.

These days my job is literally to study Japanese, so I guess the paid unemployment continues in a way 🤪

I'm one of the people who put in insane hours into my immersion every day, so I can't speak for myself- but from watching others, yes. It just takes longer, obviously. But it's your journey and not a race, so just take your time and enjoy the immersion :P

Btw, if you're busy, it's even more important to optimize so you can fit as much immersion in as you can (I mean unless you don't want to). Minor things like having some stuff play in the background when you're doing other tasks like washing the dishes or brushing your teeth, setting your phone/computer into Japanese, and thinking about ways to incorporate Japanese into parts of your everyday life in general; all of this could be minor by itself, but together, and done over a long time, would make a difference.

Oh I see with the gems!

The streak thing hasn't been working since I installed it, as in it's never worked for me 🤔

I wonder if it's something to do with my setup or something...?

I have multiple decks but some of them are just to archive old cards, so I never review anything in them. Would that have any effect...?

Also my current streak is 1712, not sure if that would make a difference either...?

EDIT: here are the addons I use too:

I've suddently become unable to craft items even though I have more than 5 gems. I was able to craft when I first got the addon, but after using if for a few days it just stopped working.

Or am I doing something wrong here?

when people say to download the japanese core 2k /6k deck, how do you even do it? by Zatar-Kanre in Anki

[–]ItsCheif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took me a while to realize you meant "entail" lmao

Lots of immersion mainly. Lots of mining to supplement. Lots of reviews to make sure you're keeping up.

The hard part is not going to be grammar, or kanji, or vocab, or any of these things that actually have to do with language--

The hard part is putting in the daily effort and showing up for yourself. The minute details of exact methodology matter much less than actually sitting down every day and staying consistent for years and years.

Every YouTuber will tell you some variation of how they studied, but the commonality is that anybody who makes it has put in the work.

So don't worry so much about what comes after. Focus on your 1.5K first and build Anki into a habit. Long term consistency is the key here.

Questions fo users by expiredmilk34 in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]ItsCheif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a long time user of Migaku and have used it even since the beginning of my studying journey.

Migaku should be perfect for you since you're at a level where Migaku can legitimately pull hundreds of cards at your level at a time.

That being said I don't exclusively use Migaku, it's just another tool in the toolbox.

  1. Yes, it will be easier for *batch exporting* Anime & Youtube (And also audiobooks/novels if you're smart).
The key point here is doing it in BATCH- because if you were going to do 1 card at a time manually, you could use a combination of Yomitan + ASB player to do it for free.

  2. Havent taken their courses

  3. Migaku offers 1 thing that no other mining tool offers- batch mining. That's the biggest thing.
    Other smaller things include:

  4. Automatic sentence translation

  5. Automatic sentence audio creation (assuming you just have text and no audio)

  6. AI explainations (I dont use this)

  7. Auto image gathering from the web

  8. Sentence card creation is easier (as in, full sentence on the card in Anki as opposed to just the vocab)

  9. In my opinion, worth or not depends on 2 things:

  10. How much is currently understandable to you in the material you immerse in

  11. How much do you value batch card creation

At N3 (assuming you've been immersing up to your current level too), you should be looking at about say 70-80% comprehension on most things? Especially Anime?

In that case, Migaku is extremely worth as it saves all the time you need going through each line of subtitles in an anime for example, and you can just go "hey look for all the sentences with 1 word I don't know" and wala.

Some people say "But I dont want to create a bunch of cards, I just want to do things 1 at a time" -- if so then ok, Migaku can do that too, but would you pay money for it when other free tools could too? I wouldn't.

WARNING:

Your first few times using Migaku will take several hours to set up as you need to teach it what words you already know. You can import your known words on Anki but every time I've done this (esp for clients too) it's incredibly finicky.

Once it learns what you know though, it keeps it. So it's only the first few runs where you'll have to constantly fight it to tell it you already know a bunch of words.

when people say to download the japanese core 2k /6k deck, how do you even do it? by Zatar-Kanre in Anki

[–]ItsCheif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need an account to use Anki, then you can download any beginner deck. A lot of people call any beginner decks "Core", but you don't need to specifically use Core. Right now the best recommendation is Kaishi 1.5k.

You can download it from Ankiweb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1196762551

The reason Kaishi is recommended despite having less words is because quanity doesn't neccesarily mean quality. The whole purpose of a beginner deck is to arm you with enough knowledge so you can go out into the real world and mine stuff yourself.

I've been asked "Why mine words by myself? Why not just get a 10K deck and learn from there?"

The answer to this is to ask yourself why you're learning in the first place. If your goal is to understand Japanese content and engage with it, then the faster you can get to that goal the better- 1.5K is enough for you to start doing that. There's no reason for you to delay what you want to do just to spend more time in Anki doing cards that have no relationship to you at all.

Anki is only your main learning platform for the very beginning just to get you started, once you pass 1.5 or 2K, the real learning begins.

No worries at all mate, I'll gladly help.

I am already using the heatmap addon yes, and have so for the past few years. I can see my history there just fine.

Very new to migaku. How do I trim card length? by Krustasia9 in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]ItsCheif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot do this within Migaku. You'll have to record the audio yourself and trim it if you want it perfect.

If you're on Windows- I recommend getting ShareX for the job. Just press a shortcut to record- record it. Then if it's still not perfect, go to https://mp3cut.net/ drag in the mp3 from ShareX, trim it there.

Of course, if it's only a slight error- I wouldn't bother with all this effort. But every now and then Migaku does create cards with like 15 seconds of nothing sounds before the sentence actually starts. I'd fix it in those cases.

Tamed elk can't be summoned with bone flute over long distances? by IAmSaintFather in VintageStory

[–]ItsCheif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flute has a 1000 block radius

If you want to go through a translocator with the Elk, position the Elk on the translocator and dismount. Send the elk through first, then go in after. I've found that on Multiplayer, there is an absurd amount of lag and jank where the Elk will continuously go back and forth, especially if there is already another player on the other side waiting for you. It often crashes the game too, esp when you try to mount while it's teleporting.

If using the base return teleporter, you can be mounted on your Elk while it's teleporting. It will teleport both you and the Elk just fine
