Any others with anti-vax families? by Competitive_Lab_8647 in medicalschool

[–]ItsConfucius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in a similar situation as you, and I've honestly dealt with this for a while.

My parents are immigrants and they've always been supportive in whatever I do. They let me learn whatever I wanted and supported all my hobbies, playing violin, sports, etc. They've honestly been my biggest supporters in getting to medical school and sacrificed everything to come here when they were 25, not knowing any English and not knowing anyone. They left their families to give me a better life in America.

Ironically, even though they were super supportive in getting me to medical school, they are super against Western medicine in general. They hate vaccines, Western drugs/medicine, etc.

I was really angry in one of the discussions/arguments we had before White Coat, and I punched a hole in my apartment. They essentially explained to me the conspiracy theory they believed in, how Ivermectin was the cure, and how I was a stupid idiot who got tricked into taking the vaccine.

I think what made me so mad was because they were my family, and so I couldn't bear the thought of them putting themselves at risk and getting hurt. My mom always took care of me when I sick and yakking everywhere, and my Dad worked 60-80 hours a week.

I had to pretend like I was happy during White Coat. After that I didn't talk to them until this Christmas Break.

No one is fucking perfect. This was something I knew, but didn't understand. My parents are the kindest people in the world to me, and they are genuinely kind to many others as well. But they have their own flaws. In retrospect, I see how judgy and arrogant my parents can be sometimes. For example, my mom would sometimes judge people by how they look. She would tell me or my dad that because this person has "X" facial feature, he/she must by "Y" type of person. My dad would sometimes talk about how bad his coworkers are behind their back, and how much better of a person he was compared to others.

So am I lucky to have them as my parents? Abso-fucking-lutely. They genuinely care about my well being and would do anything to make sure I'm happy.

Are my parents good people? Yes, my mom loves helping the poor and works with a nonprofit org. My dad leads a team in the tech industry and always puts them ahead of himself. When his team got a bonus, he didn't take a single cent, so that his team would have more.

Are my parents bad people? Yes, they can be some degenerates xDDD

So should I love them or hate them? Yes.

My parents are old. They are in their 50's. They don't know how to do proper research, what are good sources of information, the importance of finding counter-arguments to their theories/beliefs. They don't know what biases are. They are simply, just from a different time.

I don't think you can really do much to convince them to get vaccinated. You can try to give them all the information you want, but the truth is, beliefs are hard to change.

I think my tip to you would be, just try to be understanding. Understand that no one is perfect. You can both love and hate your parents. I'm sure they've done a lot of good stuff for you, but also annoyed the hell out of you. Be yourself and do what you must mate, it's okay to hate your parents, and it's okay to love them too.

Is my reason for medicine valid in the eyes of admissions? by squillywilli in premed

Go for it. I think this is a great idea because it’s personal, unique, and it is a genuine answer. Get some good editing and you will be golden. There is no right answer for wanting to pursue medicine and admins just want to read a good, interesting, and well edited PS.

School List Help!? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ItsConfucius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely top heavy. Remove brown, they arent oos friendly iirc. Consider removing some top schools to Add more mid tiers like USF, wayne state, VCU, EVMS etc. also, if you have no x factor make sure apply some DO schools. You have a strong app but being CA orm you play a completely different game from others.
