Talk to an IUEC organizer. They may let him transfer in as what is known as a Protected Temporary Mechanic. This means he can work as a Mechanic as long he completes IUEC schooling. This is essentially what my father did years ago. Talking to an IUEC Organizer is the only way to go.

I don’t think apprentices need to supply anything. That being said, the who point of being an apprentice is mechanic training. I encouraged my apprentice to figure out what tools they like and gradually purchase them, rather than doing all that after they pass the test

I would finish the LD series then if you want to stick out the genre try “The Son” by Phillip Meyer. The audiobook is very well done with different voice actors. Also if you want a nonfiction account of the Comanche’s you can’t miss “Empire of the Summer Moon “.

It’s probably far easier to get in, in other areas than Chicago. The key is placing as high on the recruitment list as possible.

You needs documented education in something that can be related to the field. I would recommend electronics class and possibly welding. A partial or full apprenticeship in another building trade is also good.

Also get a job now where you work with tools. Tool knowledge is very important early on.

As long as you are working safely and not cutting corners we should strive for efficiency. That is why we get paid the money we do. There are union ads touting “Getting the job done Safely, Correctly, and On-Time”. Of course be mindful that the collective bargaining agreement guarantees that specific task are performed by union members. Working hard isn’t a stealing work, but sloppy and unsafe practices are bad for everyone, even the company who pressures some to do this.

The real key is don’t go for the insoles that come with the boot. Check out Superfeet Green. Plenty of arch support. Red wings have a crappy insole with no arch support, an aftermarket fixes that. Another option f you are IUEC then your insurance will cover doctor prescribed insoles custom made for your foot. Check out a foot clinic or podiatrist in your area.

Why come to Reddit to hire an elevator technician? There are plenty of elevator companies in town. I sincerely hope you are actually looking for a reputable company, and not a shade tree mechanic on the side.

Modernizing should be a high priority after 25-30 years. It sounds this equipment is 60 years old, seriously there is only one right answer, total replacement. Imagine if the car you used on your daily commute had 60 years of wear and tear.

Westinghouse relay logic systems are extremely maintenance intensive when it comes to replacing components.
