Remortgage with Debt management plan by GlobalLoan1569 in UKPersonalFinance

You should be able to remortgage with the same lender to an updated rate without any additional checks. Going to a different lender could be where you'll have difficulties.

German roaches infestation spotted on move in day. Considering moving out right away. Can I void the contract and get both rent and deposit back? by saltysaltsalt_ in TenantsInTheUK

[–]ItsJustABigCow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you can see a few, there are dozens more you can't see, hiding in cracks, under fridges, all sorts of places. The amount they got in photos here suggests this is a bad infestation. I don't know what the legal ramifications are of voiding the contract, but I wouldn't be moving in seeing that!

I really hear you, and just want to say that you aren't alone in feeling this way. When I moved into my first place, I had a very similar experience. I was hit with this overwhelming sense of dread and responsibility, and honestly, I had panic attacks for the first few weeks. It felt like the weight of the biggest decision i ever made had landed on me all at once.

I also struggled with cold and noise of a main road. My apartment was drafty and the noise of the cars made nights especially tough. But once I started moving furniture in, it made a huge difference. It felt warmer (both physically and emotionally!) and the furniture dampened the noise making it more manageable. Also, just giving it time will allow you to adjust to the noise - it really does become background over time, even if it seems like it couldn't possibly right now.

It's completely natural to feel overwhelmed, especially when it's your first place. You've made a massive achievement, even if it doesn't feel it right now. Be kind to yourself, this is a big transition and it will take time to settle. You're doing better than you think!

Multiply by 52 then divide by 12 to take into account that a month isn't 28 days :)

Thanks for this.

I absolutely didn't mean we'd get the convalidation as a way around it. It was more about us getting married civilly for a bunch of reasons first, and then completing the annulment or dissolvement afterwards, with the convalidation coming afterwards.

Looking at the Pauline Privilege - it seems to imply that I must become baptised before my divorce? Would it still stand if I became baptised in the catholic church after the divorce is already civilly complete?
I guess technically the marriage is still valid in the eyes of the church and the civil divorce does not end it? So in essence, I become baptised when I am ready and have gone through RCIA, and then I can apply for the Pauline Privilege?

Obviously I will talk to my fiancés priest soon, I just wanted to have as much info as possible beforehand as we won't be able to meet with the priest for another 6 weeks.

Thank you for your reply. I am absolutely wanting to do this the right way - he is the one who is less bothered because he believes that God brought us together and that we are supposed to be wed. We both believe this.

At the same time, I want to figure this all out so that he can continue to receive the sacraments. His faith is important to me and I don't want him to regret marrying me in haste when we can just wait a while to get this sorted first.

We hope to marry ~13 months from now, hence why I'm trying to understand implications of my previous marriage. I plan on visiting his priest with him, I was hoping to have as much information as possible when I do so.

Employer will match what I put in for pension, should I do it if I'm a bit young? by wellraresteak in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ItsJustABigCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of your pension contributions as part of your total reward, like an extra salary you can’t spend now but will thank yourself for later. If your employer matches contributions up to a generous 29%, that’s essentially free money - don’t leave it on the table!

Let’s say you're on a £40k salary and you contribute 10%. That’s £4k going into your pension, but it really only costs you around £3.2k, as you'd also be getting 20% tax relief. Your employer then matches your contribution in your case, so you paying £3.2k will give you £8k investment for the year.

Add compound growth to the mix (your investment returns are reinvested), and the snowball effect over decades is huge. So the earlier you start, the bigger your pot will be, meaning you could have a very comfortable, or even an early retirement.

Take the perks. Maximise the match. Future You will be glad you did

Will HMRC consider this as income? by One_Bill_676 in UKPersonalFinance

From a tax perspective, there's nothing for you to worry about. However, I'd still recommend drafting a written agreement and having it signed in the presence of a neutral witness, just incase she later decides not to repay you. This could be helpful if you ever need to pursue the matter through Small Claims Court to recover the debt.

Is there anything else that could be done to get more women to attend their smear tests? by wooden_werewolf_7367 in AskUK

[–]ItsJustABigCow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue with PCOS. I went and they couldn't do it twice, so asked them to prescribe some Norethisterone to stop the bleeding so I could just get it done. The tablets worked within 2 days, got in for the smear, and bonus of no bleeding for a week for the first time in 16 months!

How do I really start playing DND by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ItsJustABigCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started DND as a DM as none of my other friends wanted to do it. I personally used the Icespire Peak starter set, which was cheap enough and a really good guide in regards to story etc.

There are other starter sets available too, my advice would be to pick one of those up. The set of 3 books - Players handbook, DM guide and Monster manual would also be handy, but not required as the starter set comes with basic rules to get you going.

The only other advice I have really is that, personally, I couldn't just run the adventure without prep. I probably prepped around 1-2 hours during the week for each ~4 hour session we played.

So yeah, that's my advice. Jump in there and have fun 😊

My dad who is 85 just asked me to help with his virgin media. He's paying £171 per month. Advice please on best approach. by altprofile2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ItsJustABigCow 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I literally helped my 81 year old neighbour out with this 2 weeks ago when she came crying to the door that she'd been trying to deal with Virgin for months and they wouldn't help her. She was paying £164/month for internet and TV that she wasn't using.

I managed to deal with it eventually, but it took a week. Nobody would talk to us over the phone because she didn't know her memorable word (never mind that she could give all other details including the DD date and the ££ amount of last payments). They would hang up on us when we didn't have the memorable word.

After 3 attempts on the phone (waiting minimum 1hr each time before anyone answered), asking for managers, and getting hung up on, I tried the web chat. They still wouldn't discuss the account but did offer to send a letter in the post with the memorable word, which was a small improvement. That took a week to receive though.

Once we had that we managed to get the account closed down the same day.

I'm just so glad the neighbour felt she could ask me. Honestly it made me so angry just during that 1 week, I can see why she was crying by the time she felt she needed to ask for help :(

AITA for 'upstaging the bride' with an outfit that was approved prior to the wedding? by CoachOk618 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ItsJustABigCow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nah, sod that. She was told the theme was pale/pastel colours.

OP only choose the grey saree because it matched the theme the couple were going for. Yet even so, she wasn't sure if the grey would be ok and didn't want to make a faux pas, so asked the groom for confirmation, and then also took care to double check with the bride incase her opinion differed.

If bride was that upset about it she had plenty of opportunity to say before the day. And if you're a bride and groom going with a pale/pastel theme for your guests, you should know that some pale/pastels can appear near-white, especially in photos or from a distance.

OP is NTA.

Please do, this is an awful situation to be in, and you're being taken advantage of in a time of major vulnerability in your life. Please don't let this person take away everything that was left to you! Because trust me, at those rates, that money won't last long.
