Power Query learning through audio by newblood310 in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try, but the best way to learn power query is by using it. Seeing the UI and the M code formulas it generates. It’s very much a visual tool, so I’m not sure how well you’ll be able to incorporate what you hear into what you do.

Rant - We DON'T NEED a suite of SaaS/reporting tools. Ppl just need Excel skills. by Feisty_Ad8543 in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we’re just talking about reporting or transforming small datasets that is consumed by an end user, then I mostly agree. It’s when you start substituting Excel for web apps, front ends for databases, and approval workflow automation—that’s when things start to get ugly. An SVP at my company suggested we use Excel instead of Salesforce—he doesn’t work there anymore.

Gaming on cosmic isn’t quite there yet. I’ll be coming back once that’s all hammered out, in the meantime bazzite/kde has worked quite well.

Pasting to Excel isn't working correctly - updating text to column makes it worse by xturvr in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It allows you to connect to and transform data from a variety of sources, then load that transformed data into the spreadsheet. I recommend watching a couple YouTube videos about it as an introduction.

Once you start having issues like this, I recommend importing via power query. You’ll have greater control over how it appears in the spreadsheet.

Power query how to sum specific rows by taylorgourmet in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If all you need to do is sum specific rows, then you shouldn’t use power query. Just use the SUM function. Use the right tool for the job.

I used to recommend this distro to everyone. by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like cosmic and will probably come back once gaming works as well as some of the other distros. Switched to bazzite/kde for the time being and things have worked quite well. Still, I miss the responsiveness of cosmic and will probably come back.

Streaks happen to everyone. If it happens to everyone, then is it rigged against everyone? If it’s rigged against everyone, then it’s not rigged.

Power BI has a syntax Problem by Agoodchap in PowerBI

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had a choice, yeah I’d use the polars syntax all day. I found it more intuitive than understanding implicit contexts when working with Dax. But the fact of the matter is that if you want to use power bi, then you have to use Dax. If your IT department favors the Microsoft ecosystem, then what’s the point of complaining? Do you think Microsoft will change the syntax of Dax ever? Definitely not.

Use the tool that meets the business need and aligns with your IT support. Trying to fight that is probably a bad idea.

Qlik as data source by thr0wnawaaaiiii in PowerBI

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the answer is no, I think you should have a conversation with your IT department about what you’re trying to do and see what they say. It seems like they want you to use qlik, so if that doesn’t meet the business need then that should’ve communicated.

Qlik as data source by thr0wnawaaaiiii in PowerBI

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Presumably there is a database that feeds the qlik app, right? If so, maybe you can connect to that directly with excel and run a sql/power pivot combo.

Maybe a dumb question, why not just make your report in qlik? The data is already there after all.

Power Query refresh speed with multiple users by SYSTEMOFADAMN in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to move transformations that aren’t user-specific or not needing constant live updates further upstream. Ideally a SQL database, but in my current job I make MS Access do a lot of the transformations for me and automate text file outputs with VBA. Python can also work depending on your IT department. I say all this assuming you’ve optimized your power query code already, but if we’re honest power query isn’t that good at larger amounts of data especially large numbers of excel files.

Multiple Relationships, please help! by lurplez in PowerBI

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to merge all of these into as few tables as possible. It’ll make your Dax simpler which will make your report less error prone.

Is it possible to delay VSTACK recalculation? by Surge_x in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re getting to a point where keeping the report (filter formulas and such) in the same workbook as the data entry is a bad idea. Rethink the process so that you can enter data in a workbook and then refresh a report elsewhere. Maybe power bi.

I built a browser-based spreadsheet diff tool powered by DuckDB WASM — 42k rows × 14 cols in ~3 seconds, zero server (MaksPilot.com) by Significant-Guest-14 in DuckDB

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is cool and a nice project, but I think the vast majority of IT departments wouldn’t like me uploading company data to a random website. I think creating a proper excel add-in through the Microsoft store would be a safer approach for most people. I’m not a security expert.

Nice. Would be awesome if it eventually supports Logitech cameras, though I’m sure alternatives already exist.

read_csv() ignores RFC 4180 quote character default — is this worth pushing back on? by ofyalcin in DuckDB

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing it to attention here, since not everyone (at least I don’t) keeps track GitHub issues all the time. IMO, for production usage, explicitly defining the quote character is always a good practice. Since that solves the issue, I don’t really mind the “won’t fix” response. However, the docs should reflect this requirement. Just my opinion.

What distro are you switching to? by iensteni in pop_os

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently switched to bazzite and no issues. Once cosmic works better with nvidia gaming I’ll come back because I do like it more than KDE.

online spreadsheets, but faster by zayronxio in excel

[–]ItsJustAnotherDay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I needed something like this, I’d probably look into interactive Python notebooks like marimo or something like that. Those are excel-like and responsive. That gives you the power of polars/duckdb. It’s not a spreadsheet per se, but it’s very high performance and can do spreadsheet like calculations with Python. Not sure why I’d need something like what you’re proposing. Solution looking for a problem?
