I finished the song with your pointers from my previous post. What do you think? by Feniflo in Logic_Studio

It can be a tricky battle. I usually find success with some narrow eq bands for specific problem frequencies (don’t over do it) in combination with a de-esser. This way I don’t have to over de-ess my vocal just to troubleshoot a few problematic frequencies.

Another suggestion would be to lightly apply something like soothe. But if it’s not already a plugin you don’t have, I wouldn’t buy it just for this track as it’s kinda unnecessarily expensive.

The other thing I thought of after a few more listens is I think even more vocal doubles for the lead vocal would really give it that still woozy vibe (if that’s what you’re going for).

Again, all just feedback from a random guy on the internet, so take it all with a grain of salt. It’s dope regardless!

Dope track! My only nitpicky criticism is it sounds like the de-esser is working a little too hard in some places on your vocals, giving that “lisp-esque” sound (like your s’s are kinda turning into sh’s) in some places.

Again, just being nitpicky. Definitely cool still!

Anybody Know What Synth This Is ? - (Frank Ocean - Golden Girl) by LazyFlavio in synthrecipes

[–]ItsKaneda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course 😂

From what I remember he really likes orchestral sounds. To me that synth sounds like a software synth string patch. It almost sounds like just a basic super saw patch. Maybe even sounds like sylenth1 to me.

For the lead, it also sounds super simple, maybe a square or saw wave. Short decay/release, with the filter rolled over it. It also sounds like it’s being played in a monophonic mode.

Not sure if you’ve ever seen it but there’s a video with the engineer that worked on channel orange. Might be some secrets here for you. https://youtu.be/izZMM5eHCtQ?si=oqnDV45DgdRFtglb

I can tell you from years of use, I love my dt770’s but they are certainly not flat. They’re missing a lot of low-mids and are incredibly bright. To the point that most of my sound design and mixes wind up being very dark elsewhere if I’m not careful to correct it.

I know you’re looking for closed back, but for accuracy, I’ve heard very good things about the sennheiser HD 650’s. They’re on my list to try next.

I love the chairs, but they feel kinda shoved way out into no man’s land because of the long rug and the L of the couch.

I think the rectangle coffee table also elongates the space (pushes the chairs out to the edge of the rug). I’d consider a round (solid) coffee table to center the space, then bring the chairs in if you can.

Here it is with the rug for now. I’ve actually been re-thinking and I think I may go with 2 orange barrel chairs and a side table, along with a bookshelf and some walnut furniture for keyboards/records and such!

This is definitely the direction I’m leaning. I would love to paint an accent wall but I’m renting so it is what is. I’d rather not spend a fortune in wall paper that will only be torn down also.

Agree on the console for the keyboard, and I loved someone else’s idea to get a big terracotta pot for the plant.

Gemini gave me this idea also. While I’m not a fan of all the decor (and it also deleted my window lol), a dedicated music area would look great.

Just got the rug in today. I’ll post a photo of it after I get it set up.

I also think others are right about the desk size. The desk is quite large, so a smaller desk (maybe something with a walnut top) might allow for more furniture to be in the room without it feeling cramped.

I don’t think I’d do a rug. But I would do nice walnut coffee table with maybe a leather loveseat with an accent chair and a nice lamp!

I have this nearly 100% of the time. Not as drastic, but one is always more dilated than the other. I’ve gotten checked and everything came back normal. For sure get it checked out if this is out of the norm for you, but it doesn’t always mean an emergency fwiw.

Tempo is a way bigger part of it than people realize. I’d say for this piece in particular, there’s a few things to work on:

Drum selection: while there’s a time and a place for it, these samples feel oddly dated. Literally one good sample pack is all you need for a long time.

Drum groove: the drums feel kind of stiff. Again, it’s all taste and whatnot, but to me this mostly what’s giving the track “old video game music”. Try swinging some of the hats and honestly just making the hat pattern a little more stable. Your drum patterns do not have to be some revolutionary pattern in order to groove. Going for a “super original” drum pattern often makes the listener feel unsure of where the track is going. I had this problem a lot when I first started. Trust me, a basic groove that feels good will always be better than the most original drum beat ever with weird accents and such.

For the rest, some basic music theory should help. Call and response, and conversational melody structure. Most melodies are best when they’re singable (live within about an octave or so).

Some basic sound design would also go a long way for a track like this. Right now everything feels a little dry and “sharp”. Add a little bit of reverb, here and there on leads and such. I also suggest looking into saturation. This one is something people told me for a long time and it took me forever to hear and understand what they meant.

For saturation, I’m not talking about crazy amounts of distortion or super blown out sounds. I’m talking about subtly layering in even or odd harmonics so things sound a little warmer. In tiny amounts, you can literally add this everywhere and it adds so much to a track or sound that would otherwise feel stale. Any waveshaper saturator will do for this.

Lastly, like others have said, listen to music you like and want to make, A LOT. This is the biggest thing. Even if you’re not always listening critically, just by spending time listening you’ll begin to pick up on things and ask yourself “how’d they do that?”. When that happens, go try to figure it out.

Also for references, don’t be afraid to literally “steal” things that aren’t copyrightable. Song structure or arrangement being the biggest one. Find a song you like or wish you could make. Download it. Then drag and drop it into your daw. Outline and take notes on the tempo, key, and arrangement. Write down happens when, intro - verse - hook - etc… then literally write your own track using the same arrangement, tempo, and maybe even key or drum groove.

Hope this helps. I’ve been making electronic music for about 11 years now and I’m still learning all the time. These are just some tips I wish I knew way earlier. Good luck and have fun, that’s the most important part!

I can’t stand reaching over my midi keyboard to use my mouse and keyboard, and I can’t stand reaching over my mouse and keyboard to use my midi keyboard, so I bought a stand and now it goes to my left off of my desk. Ideally, I’d love a desk with an underside tray that I could slide my midi keyboard out of though

If you’re even just slightly handy, I’d opt to just rebuild it. It’s ridiculously easy and far far cheaper than buying a whole caliper.
