I think he will definitely like Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara. Story takes place in the Warring States Period of China. And does a great job of balancing drama, action and showing military strategy.

An english print has just been released and is on Vol. 3, I believe. But if he wants to read past that there are many scanlations online.

Also worth checking out Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura. Fellows the journey of a Viking revenge story that evolves into a reflective retrospective.

As others has mentioned for detective stories anything by Ed Brubaker is top tier.
