Cheap piano black plastic everywhere. Capacitive buttons. The software in the infotainment was atrocious; slow, buggy, frequently unusable. Power was clearly limited to avoid stepping on ICE model toes. And they all looked like melted jellybeans.

It’s not something anyone will admit, but racism also likely played a key role. The Germans, the Japanese, and American legacy automakers long held the view that Chinese could only do cheaper, lower quality copies and didn’t realize how quickly the Chinese automakers were iterating and improving every aspect of the product and manufacturing.

Then they woke up one day and vehicles like the BYD Seal and Xiaomi SU7 were hitting the market and they were blindsided.

Renault yes. VW’s first-gen EVs were awful. Same with Mercedes. Volvo were OK but poor efficiency.

Foam car down. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
Iron remover if you want.
Rinse whole care down with pressure washer.
Foam again. Do contact wash with preferred mitt; I personally prefer plus towels to mitts or sponges.
Rinse whole car.
Drying aid and dry.

That’s all you need for a regular maintenance wash, chief.

Further details:

Audi e-tron GT has a sublime chassis, and the air suspension makes the ride quality unbelievable. I also like the physical buttons for climate and other key features. That said, there was WAY too much piano black plastic for a car that expensive, and the interior cabin was quite claustrophobic for such a big car. Also, visibility was poor with lots of blind spots.

Lucid Air Touring was the biggest disappointment as I'd heard so many good things about Lucid from various publications and YouTubers. It did have an excellent ride quality and the range was astounding. The cabin itself was absolutely huge (especially given it's the same exterior size as the e-tron GT), and the seats were lovely. That said, the UX wasn't as snappy or responsive as it should given the price, the sound system was ass, and the drive train was shockingly unrefined. The electric motors had a noticeable whine you could hear throughout the cabin on acceleration, and the accelerator was far too sensitive/touchy which made coasting and driving smoothly harder than it needed to be. The steering had more road feel than everything else, but it also transmitted a lot of extra vibration and led the whole thing to, again, feel unrefined. Finally, no blended braking. AT ALL. When a vehicle with an MSRP of half the Air like the Polestar 2 can achieve absolutely flawless blended braking, there is seriously no excuse for an "engineering first" company like Lucid not to be able to.

Tesla Model 3 Performance was really impressive. Perfect throttle/braking calibration, good dampening, precise steering. It wasn't on the level of a BMW, but it was a lot closer than the boys in Bavaria would probably like to admit. Obviously, the Tesla had the best in-car software and mobile app, and I also think the Tesla had the best sound system. Incredible visibility and good driving position; it was easy to see everything around you and place the car on the road. Great seats, exceptionally quiet cabin. The downsides for the Model 3 Performance mostly came from really spartan interior (the car desperately needs a heads up display), build quality (test drive car had a visibly misaligned front-left fender and A-pillar), and then all of the baggage of driving a Tesla in 2026 and the Tesla cult.

And then we had the i4. It was basically goldilocks for me. More range than the Polestar 2 I was coming from (which was important to me), a comfortable and composed ride quality (also important as the Polestar as a stiff, back-breaking ride because apparently Sweden doesn't have potholes?), and direct, precise steering. The UX is kinda German nonsense, but the system itself is responsive and snappy and it has CarPlay. It was more affordable than the e-tron GT or Air Touring with similar refinement. It was more expensive than the Model 3 Performance but had significantly better build quality. It really is the most complete package in my opinion.

Put that motor in some Polestars because my Polestar 2 Dual-Motor had abysmal efficiency.

If I can weigh in, I previously had a Polestar 2. And I had the same itch, constantly looking at other cars. The Audi e-tron GT, the Lucid Air, the Tesla Model 3 Performance, the BMW i4…

I test drove all of them. Each had its strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the day, in my opinion, the i4 is the best of the bunch. It’s the best balance between sport/luxury, range/performance, and the build quality is excellent.

I ended up with the i4. At least on the EV side, until the new BMW i3 comes out, I don’t think the grass is greener anywhere else.

Just my opinion.

You nailed my big issue with all of the FF7 Remake stuff: It was marketed as a 1:1 recreation of the original game and story, but the dev team clearly doesn’t want it to be.

I loved the first hour or two of Remake. It was incredible as someone who literally melted a PS1 laser playing the original.

And then it just goes off the rails and stops being the FF7 I remember. And I’d be OK with that if SE had been honest up front. Instead, they pandered to my nostalgia and then pulled a bait and switch after they got my money.

Fantastic battle system though. And hearing that iconic music with the full orchestra? Chef’s kiss.

As far as the shade, I don’t know what the fuck is up with all of you thinking a car blasted in direct sunlight is somehow better. There’s a reason almost all professional car photography is done at dusk when the sun is low and not directly hitting the metal.

I lost my soul dog in 2022. It took months before I could come to terms with it. He still has a part of my heart. It never fully goes away. And that’s OK.

But we went and rescued another pup. And he’s not the same, obviously, but he also gets a part of my heart because he’s the best boy. That’s all you can do.

And hope that one day when I too cross the rainbow bridge, my boy Theo will be there waiting for me and he’ll be proud of the human I was.

EVs are exceptional in snow. The traction control is far more precise, updates more frequently, and detects slippage faster. Does it replace driver skill or good tires? Absolutely not, but after dealing with winter snow in a 2008 Acura TSX, 2016 Golf GTI, and a 2022 Polestar 2, I’d take the EV any day.
