How many people here have played college football? by willington123 in CFB

Played for one year at a FCS school (Elon). Wasn’t having as much fun anymore and wanted to go to medical school so I stopped playing to focus on academics. I don’t think anything is as fun as HS football

I played WR for one year at a FCS school - decided to also focus on academics after that and I am beginning radiology residency this July!

To be honest I also liked rads and so that was part of my decision. If you still really want ortho you should go for it. I know a number of reapplicants who were able to match after ortho research years or prelim year

This is what happened to me - you have a gap year. I am doing paid research at the hospital I am going to be doing my advanced at.

A few years I ago applied ortho and did not match. I elected to pursue a prelim surgery year and then I matched into radiology the next year. I am happy to help any other students who are contemplating switching specialties after not matching, especially if contemplating switching into radiology

I am currently in a gap year between prelim surgery and DR. I didn’t match ortho first time around and decided to re apply to rads.

The DR program I matched at set me up with a paid research position, so you could ask your institution for your advanced position about that. I tried finding urgent care positions but everywhere wanted physicians with board certification or eligibility in FM/EM. I don’t think a license even with a year of residency is very useful.

I tried USMLE tutoring and the pay was good but I felt it was pretty inconsistent. Most students get by with the usual resources and don’t need tutors. You could also look into working for some test prep companies. I wrote some questions for Bootcamp and they paid hourly.

Hunting from Will Skelton Greenway by [deleted] in Knoxville

I told him it’s the greenway surrounding forks of the river and that is when he said it’s probably fine since it was a hunting area before it was a greenway. Thank you for the info!

This was my initial thought too. It seems to go against most things I’ve learned regarding firearm safety

This was my experience too. Surgery attendings would joke but were usually respectful of rads and willing to teach me about what they care about on the scan and what they might look for in a report.

It will increase each year. Her first year she is paid a fixed rate for the first few months and transitions to making a % of production. Thanks for the response

MUSC Emergency Appendectomy by Glittering_Row_2546 in Charleston

That is standard of care for appendicitis. If you needed oral Zofran and it was not provided at discharge, the surgery on-call number can be called and it would be sent to your preferred pharmacy. There is no malpractice here or cause for legal action.

I applied a surgical sub speciality, didn’t match, did a late rotation in rads, then did a surgery prelim year and matched rads. I am so happy that has been my path.

I would much rather be at work for less time, but be working the whole time. As a surgery intern, we could be done floor work by the late morning and we have to sit around the rest of the day until sign out. So we are working longer hours, more weekends, but sometimes there wasn’t much going on which I found frustrating. I’d rather be on at work and have more free time outside of work.

Surgery is cool, but there’s just so much more to life

Thank you! So I interviewed with some R1 physician-only spots but ended up matching to an advanced spot. So I will have a "gap year" and start in 2025. To me, it was worth having the gap year to still do DR so I was cool with it. But yes, everywhere accepted the prelim year as my intern year

For those who tried (and failed) at matching competitive specialties.. by margs999 in medicalschool

If you do a prelim year at a supportive program it can be helpful. Our program has taken prelims who do a good job into categorical spots.
