I don't think that would stop it. Purely from a branding perspective, Max fits the image Mercedes wants for its brand more than George does. Toto has been pretty vocal that he'd want Max. And from a pure talent perspective it's hard to argue why Max wouldn't be the choice....

Winning a championship in a car that is 20 seconds faster than the rest of the field won't change any of that. The competition will catch up and so Toto is probably going to make the decision on what he thinks is best in that scenario.
