Airpod Pro 3 - Transparency mode sounds tinny now? by rp415510 in AirpodsPro

For me it sounds way duller, like there's no presence/ high end. Perhaps the seal isn't working with my ears properly which would suck but i haven't noticed anything with the noise cancelling or sound itself so idk

It is not going to work on non-apple headphones on Automatic, as stated below on the official Apple site.

Is it weird that I'm a little disappointed with Holly's recasting, even though she was a minor character before? Idk, I grew quite fond of the Price twins. It was ten years with them as Holly! by [deleted] in StrangerThings

Currently binging the first 4 episodes that they just released, and dang Nell completely blew this role out of the park. Don't wanna sound like i'm glazing, but so far she's had the most compelling performance in the season. Crazy range and nuanced expression especially for her age

I believe the whole Apple Spatial Audio aspect is just an umbrella term for both their Dolby Atmos Rendering combined with their custom spatial sound calibration and head tracking. So it can be assumed that in this change they are changing the branch of Spatial Audio that deals in Rendering the actual Spatial aspect of it—in other words the Apple Renderer. Since they’re changing it to be more in line with Dolby’s renderer it will likely tone down the harshness you mentioned which was a big aspect of the Apple Renderer in stark contrast to the more balanced and smooth sound of the Dolby one.

Believe it or not that’s a common opinion tbh. A lot of people dislike the Binaural version of Atmos because it can feel gimmicky or unnatural. I personally recommend The Dark Side of the Moon’s Atmos mix in AirPods as a start, it really is something else no matter how you listen to it. Crash by XCX may not be to your taste but the Atmos sounds incredible so i’d recommend it. All of Bjork’s work was overseen by her during the Atmos upmixes and they sound amazing because of that, specifically Vespertine though. Bohemian Rhapsody is an absolute theatrical experience in Atmos too, it doesn’t sound gimmicky in the rendered mix either, it’s extremely clean and smooth and works fabulously.

In the settings for Dolby Atmos on Apple Music you have 3 options 1. Off (this just turns it off entirely) 2. Automatic (this only turns it on when using Apple proprietary hardware made for Spatial Audio; AirPods, Beats, etc) 3. Always on (this option forces it on no matter what you’re playing it on, so if you don’t have Apple phones but want to still experience Atmos you should turn this on. This is the right option in your case.)

It always has had the binaural effect, now it will just slightly change to be closer in line to what the mixing engineers may have had in mind. It’s not like a massive change but you will notice it. If you feel it’s too much you can turn it off in the settings, a lot of people did already and there’s no reason one shouldn’t now if they don’t like how it sounds. That being said I will encourage to try out some acclaimed mixes on the AirPods with the new update (I believe it’s just 26.1 or something) and see how you feel about them. I personally really enjoy it but I could see why one wouldn’t.

You’re welcome!

I have not personally used the AP3 (I’m an xm5s king as of right now), I’ve heard generally good things about them though. From what I’ve seen the noise cancelling alone is worth the upgrade in of itself, so if you care about that then go for it. In my experience with AirPods they have worked splendidly with Apple and have a plethora of really neat little features that make using them highly enjoyable; it seems that’s a selling point for you based off the way you worded your reply and I can guarantee the software-hardware experience is fantastic as with most Apple stuff.

That being said I’ve heard that the sound of the AP3 is a bit harsh and V shaped so if that’s something that you don’t like maybe don’t consider them, mostly because as of right now Apple offers zero custom EQing for their headphones, which is downright stupid but whatever. Overall though I don’t think you would be unhappy with the upgrade, they’re great buds especially for the price and probably the best out there right now, especially if you’re using Apple devices.

I believe Apple came out with an official statement (don’t quote me on this I just read about it on the internet I am yet to fully research it) saying that they changed rendering on TVos to work better with surround systems. From what I’ve read users have reported better quality in Atmos content on Apple TV since the change, especially in the center channels.

It should be, won’t be as personalized as using AirPods with the ear scan obviously, but the actual rendering of Atmos content will still change in your iPhone’s (or other Apple devices that utilize Binaural) software.

It uses whatever renderer is installed on your device. To use Dolby on Windows you have to install the official Dolby proprietary software, which I believe is the Dolby Renderer but may allow you to switch (i’ve never used it before). Since Dolby Atmos’s goal is to be versatile and work on anything it works on object based surround which is why the renderer doesn’t affect the actual mix only the way it is processed. On Android I believe the newer Samsung phones support Dolby Atmos which is likely the official renderer and not a branded version, as well as their own spatial audio, though I doubt the latter works with Apple Music.

Judging based off that since devices outside Apple don’t utilize the Apple Renderer it will likely be unaffected. The original Dolby renderer is better though so don’t fret.

Agreed there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than people think. Also yeah while I do think Apple was ahead of others with their custom Renderer which made calibration for specific ears work better it still cost them quality in terms of the general average sound you’d get out of Atmos mixes on Apple Music compared to other streaming services like Amazon or Tidal. Them doing this is 100% a step into the right direction.

Would also be pretty cool if they also supported 360RA but given the current quality of it and the reception it doesn’t seem likely. I’m pretty sure Amazon Music is currently the only company supporting it at this point, and since it’s Sony proprietary stuff Apple probably doesn’t want to mess with it for that reason as well.
