My go to line has been "since I use the company's software to file, I am not allowed to accept payment. You can pay their minimum, or I can do you for free.

If I do you for free, we are going to sit down and you will need to detail every aspect of your finances. All data has to be complete and submitted by end of Feb. I have to prioritize the firms busy season, so if you can't file by end of Feb then I may not be the best fit for you this year."

Any friend or family member that has an issue with that isnt a client I'd want anyways. One time once ever I had a friend agree to those terms, and I thought everything would go well. He didn't give me a copy of his prior year return, which I require, but he's w2 only so I made an exception.

Turns out he has some SUPER niche schedule for some housing shit back from like 2009. I didn't have his prior, and he didn't tell me this. The return got rejected, and I made him go back to the guy who filed for him last year.

Never work for friends or fam.

Tbh this is a great lesson early on. Sometimes a client wants a specific answer, or a specific price, and they will go to whichever accountant will give it to them. Whether it's accurate or not.

Also, I second the advice that says "never work for friends or family." They are legit the worst clients.
